Hi!

I'm looking for information and reviews regarding John Davis' full splice blanks. I have heard some very positive things and also a few negatives that concern me, mainly blanks not turning true, warpage, etc. Please share your experiences with these blanks. I am interested in the quality of woods, his drying and aging process, and glues he uses as well.

Thank you!!

I have converted a couple for customers in the past. Feel free to call me at 720 206 4034 and I will let you know what I think. Chris.

Good blanks. They are well oversized for the builder to make adsjustments & working room. Understand they are still just wood, and over finish size. This means if a builder gets a blank & cuts it into a cue right away, it'll have high likeliness to move just as any wood is prone to do after a fast, thick cut. I have a handful in my shop that have been sitting here a long time & i'm in no hurry to finish them. I did one conversion & it worked out great, but it took me well over a year to do it. So my point is, they are wonderful blanks but are still wood. Nobody makes unwarpable blanks. It's up to the guy doing the conversion to make things happen, not the guy who supplied the blank.

I have a dozen of John's blanks in stock - his most recent construction is excellent - Burton Spain would be proud of these. As far as materials and glues etc. I have not experienced any problems to date.

I have converted 1 of his blanks and I am in process of doing the second. The first one was about 6 months ago and the 2nd I am have just started. The first one was perfect. Very even points and no movement at all. So far no problems with the second one.

I wouldn't have a problem at all using John Davis blanks at all.

I'm not a cuemaker so I can't comment on working with his raw blanks, but John made a complete cue for me (avitar) and it just plays lights out...fantastic hit and feel. Just wanted to say that....
:p

The blanks Mr. Davis makes are the beginning of a fine cue. I just posted a thread in the Cue Gallery featuring Davis blanked cues. My friend, who uses his blanks exclusively, wanted me to share some pics with the community here. When you put one of his blanks in a Master Cue Makers hands, a "Stradivarius" is born.

I've converted 8 or more and they need lots of time between turns. I wouldn't finish one without 6-12 months dry time.

Davis makes a great blank. As far as warping that's the builders responsibility, not Johns.

I heard something about John making solid full splice without the extra splice under the wrap. Anybody else heard this?

Yeah, he does it without the second splice. He's also fine tuned the points to much sharper tips & cleaner bottoms. I just got a blank the other day & it was wonderfully executed. Most things in cuemaking I prefer to learn on my own, but when it comes to fine full splices i'd be ready to take a lesson from John.

I just received my two full spliced blanks from John about a week ago.

I took them to a cue maker friend and he's going to do the conversion, nice and slow.

The points are very close to matching up now, less than 1/8" out, and we're confident they can be lined up during turns.

The bottom of the points is sharper than I have seen and also very even.

John talked about making one without the maple second splice, but warned it would weigh a ton (ebony points).

I'll post pics and updates as things progress.

I'm not a cue maker but I've owned 3 John Davis blank cues. One, BCM, one Gracio and one Joe Callaluca. All are fantastic finish and feel.

IIRC, they currently run in the $350 - $400 range.

Do my eyes deceive me or is that 5 veneers? Most I've ever seen in a full-splice before was 4. If so, I know who will be building my blank in the future. I had not considered Davis before because of the extra splice...I wanted a solid piece of wood from points to butt cap.

Yes, the blank has 5 veneers. Here is a cue that also has a 5 veneer Davis blank. Unfortunately, it was stolen soon after completion.

John Davis Blanks

I have found that if my customers are looking for a traditional full spliced veneered cue that starting with a blank from John Davis IS the way to go. I maintain an inventory of at least 24 full spliced blanks (and several half spliced) in the shop. This inventory offers potential customers a wide range of veneer color and wood combination AND it permits me the luxury of having "seasoned" blanks ready for actual construction.

That cue is beautiful!! It is a shame it was stolen. I love the traditional look.
