How does a player get put in the field when they are supposed to take you out? Technically if you get put into the field aren't you still in the calcutta, therefore open to people bidding on you and perhaps buying you?

To me removing yourself from the auction includes the field too, maybe I am crazy for thinking that.

Say that John (or anyone) removed themself from the player auction bidding, then won the tournament. Would the person who placed 2nd get the first place share of the calcutta, or the 2nd place share?

As a side note, I also think that Mike Janis does a great job running the Viking events.

Chris, when you take your name out of the Auction and you go into the field, you as a player are relieved from any and all responsibilities that are attributed to the Auction. At this point it does become buyer beware.

That seems like a fair solution. John would surely make the field a strong pot would he not. But Buyer Beware being the policy, I think is a good solution. You might want to inform the audience about it if you have a strong player in the field. I never let myself go into the field anyway, but just wanted to find out how it would work. By the way I feel you run a great tour and I look forward to playing on many more stops. Who knows I may even cash again one day.

I have MORE interesting question:

Am I the only player in the history of pool that has been offered a cut of the action if I let "Player X" slide through? I doubt it. These player auctions/calcuttas have always been bad for tournaments.

Thanks, Chris. I guess I have never noticed, but I have attended quite a few Viking events, and I don't remember Mike running off a "pool" of players. I guess I just missed it.

I think this is a reasonable compromise to this situation and I am curious if John and Mike would be open to it. s.

There is always room for reasonable intelligent discourse, I think way too many people have their noses in what should be Mike and John's business ONLY !

John had his reasons and Mike had his ,it should be case closed but instead the OP brought it here for a public referendum on the subject .

Any chance of a reasonable settlement is probably now in jeopardy solely because the "expert panel" of judges here deem it necessary to blow it even more out of proportion .

I believe eventually cooler heads will prevail and John will find a way to make it right and once again join the Viking Tour. Pool doesnt need any more blemishes and especially by the people who claim to love the sport one day and try to bring it down lower the next ?

Whenever I "bought" a player in a calcutta, I looked at it as strictly a fun-and-games gamble, not to be taken too seriously. I've had similar stuff happen to me and just gaffed it off - win some, lose some. The guy that paid the $400 has no claim from anyone IMO; for anyone to say that John Schmidt owes this person $400 is as ludicrous as my saying that the Seattle Seahawks owe me money that I lost betting on them in the Super Bowl. At the least, calcuttas should be like Vegas: what happens in a calcutta, stays in the calcutta.

I just got asked by someone if I would join their team for that tournament. It's in Oroville and takes place at the end of this month. It sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I'm really surprised because Oroville doesn't have much there besides the dam, at least as far as I know.

The Industrial Painting Company that I work for has been repainting the turbines at the Hyatt Dam in Oroville for the past few years. You are so right, that ref should have tackled Willie Parker as soon as he got to the line of scrimmage (I think the same ref that missed that tackle was the one that was supposed to cover Heinz Ward on that trick play).

I would have to agree with you. I thought the "field" was the players who were not bought in the Calcutta. Putting a person of JS's caliber in the field would have the effect of people still bidding on him and not the rest of the field.

So in effect it will draw more money for the TD even though the player wanted no part of it. And if the player drops out there will still be the same problems.
