July 31st Day 3 TV stream schedule is: http://worldstraightpool.com/livestream.html

1030am Ralph Eckert GER vs Chris Lynch USA
12:00pm Efren Reyes PHL vs Joey Kong KOR
130pm Thorsten Hohmann GER vs Peter Burrows USA

430pm Johnny Archer USA vs Huidji See NED
6pm John Schmidt USA vs Cleiton Rocha BRZ
730pm Mika Immonen FIN vs Mike Dechaine USA

So far none of the Europeans - Hohmann, Cohen, Appleton, Huidji, Eckert etc or Efren Reyes, Strickland, in all their matches plus the field have been able to put together a 100 ball run until last night. Only Archer and Schmidt, back to back.

It was a nice feat and got much applause from the knowledgeable NYC 14.1 crowd

I expect this world championship to produce a lot of great stories of long runs, great comebacks, & a win by a player topping off his career...yes, I'm pulling for Efren to add a 14.1 title to his resume' before he retires.

Glad to hear it.

But I think they should be going to 800!:wink: Seriously, kind of.

I agree, to an extent. At some point you have to decide between a sufficiently long race and having more players compete.

We could go back to the 1000+ point matches of Mosconi's day. The downside is they would be one-on-one challenge matches. Maybe TAR would be interested in a straight pool challenge match?

Running hundreds in a tournament is always impressive to me regardless of the equipment. Running 100 ( and out in this case) from the break is even more so.

Didn't Efren win the Maine Event back in the 90s? That straight pool tournament was a big deal back then.

As someone who plays straight pool I am impressed when anyone, amateur or pro, runs a century or more.

I too feel like a match to 100 is too short for this calibre of players, but they need to keep the matches moving

Why only 100. That's straight pool league. It'd better be double elimination, otherwise too many upsets.

Straight pool to 100 for a pro event?

Draw straws.
As mentioned before, that's only in the round-robin section. That's the way this tournament has been done since Dragon started it back in 2006 or so. I think that 4 out of 6 in each group will advance. The round-robin is a chance for all the player to get some experience and to get used to the tables. I think this is the best format for an event like this.

The first phase of the tournament is a round-robin. There are 8 groups of 6 players each. Everyone in a group plays everyone else in the group. That means that everyone will get to play 5 matches. In order to keep the time reasonable, those matches are to 100.

After the round-robins have been completed, the top four players in each group advance to the elimination rounds. Of the original 48 players, 32 will advance to the "main" tournament. The players have been seeded, so the only way a top player won't get out of his group and into the knock-out phase is if he really under-performs. You are likely to see some players with a 2-3 record in the prelims going through.

Reyes

Yes, your right. Mr. Reyes already has a check mark on his side in 14.1, the only game he hasnt won a championship in is banks.

Yes he did.
High run was 136 iirc against Rempe.
Who knows what he'd do if all tourneys were straight pool then..

Congrats to John.

That is exactly what I was thinking, who the hell makes it a race to 100 in a pro straight pool event?

<edit> As a round robin it is better, but if the knockout stage is only a race to 200 on tables easy enough that the players are doing 100 and out with fair regularity then it is also not enough.

Time to look at the new 10-foot tables DP.
