Johnston City players list

The second guy middle row is suppose to be Hayden Lingo. He's accredited with inventing one pocket.

Scott -- That same picture (in post #6 with the caption "Entries -- 1961") is in the program on the Ursitti site (for the 7th Annual All Round event) with the caption "FIRST WORLD'S ALL-ROUND TOURNAMENT -- 1962."

So it looks like that picture does not represent the entries for the one-pocket event of 1961.

You know what, I think your right! Thanks. He was an old man by then. The story was that he invented One Pocket in the 30's in Oklahoma. All the old timers said he was the best who ever played the game.

P.S. I'm going to take exception to the date of 1961 on that photo. Johnny Vevis, Hubert Cokes and Fats are not in that picture and there are more than sixteen players shown. I strongly suspect that photo is from 1962 (or 1963) when the tournament was expanded to an All Around format with 9-Ball and Straight Pool added. I believe someone added that date afterward and it is mislabeled.

The picture above is captioned 1961 entries and includes Cisero Murphy. I had heard that blacks were excluded the first few years. Is that correct, or did Cisero play in 1961?

I would bet that Cisero did not go to Johnston City in 1961. He was not a One Pocket player. The following year (1962) he would have gone for the 9-Ball and Straight Pool. The Jansco's didn't exclude anybody who would gamble! They weren't part of that East Coast clique and elitist group that kept Cisero out of the major Straight Pool tournaments.

That famous picture is dated incorrectly. It is definitely not from 1961, the first year of the Johnston City run. There were only 14 players in that tournament.

That aint 1961, (only 14 entrants in '61) and the 3rd guy in the middle row aint Howard Barrett, it's CornBread Red. You could always tell by his ears.

Finally, Cisero Murphy was not there for sure, in 1961. However, Chicago's Javenly Youngblood Washington (a great black player) was there. There is even a cartoon image of him in the Sports Illustrated Article.

Am I the only person left alive that saw Lingo play one pocket?

I was going to OU in 1960 and went to OKC to play snooker with Norman Hitchcock. Broke even and then went downtown to another pool room.

On the first table on the left Lingo was playing one pocket with Glenn Womack (Eufaula Kid). Don't remember if they were playing even or not but Lingo could still really play.

Thanks Freddie, I was uncertain if it was Howard or Red. Howard had big ears too. I think we've named them all correctly now. I'm with you on the date being wrong.

Billy, you went downtown to the Central Club, a historic poolroom that was in OKC for over 75 years. Had the long lunch counter on the right side (good food too). And all the tables were in a row along the left side. Ronnie played golf in there on the snooker table quite often. I'm sure Hayden had an influence on him as well.

Eufala was one of the top players of that era, and Ronnie patterned himself after him to a great degree. When I had the poolroom in Bakersfield in the 70's, Eufala showed up one day just to practice. His daughter lived there, that's why he was in town. I was playing good then but I left him alone! :wink:

It says "7th Annual All Round" on the cover. The first event was one pocket only, in 1961, and the all-round events started in 1962. So it could be either 1967 or 1968 depending on how they counted. But since the program shows a picture of the 1966 All-Round Champion but not one for 1967, I'm going to guess that it is the 1967 program.
 
From looking at this list, Lassiter was the man during those times in that tournament. Eferen and Shane are his contemporaries in Derby City to draw a comparison.

I was around those guys a lot in the 60's and 70's. I would usually spend a week to 10 days at both Johnston City and the Stardust. Plus I got around a little to action pool rooms.
