Hi guys!

I have played with a SS 5/16 14 for years and like the way it plays. I am about to get a cue built and was wondering what material can be used for the joint that plays like SS but is not SS.

To me, the SS plays solid and I would like to hear your opinions on what material I could go with that plays like it.

Thanks ahead of time for your knowledgeable responses.

Maybe you would like to try Damascus steel. :D

I think I have seen one on a PFD, five to six years ago.

Brass is probably as close as you can come.

Back in the day German Silver/Nickel Silver which is a form of Brass
was popular with some cuemakers. It is shinny and 'silvery', like SS.

More details

Let me be more specific. Should have done this before. Sorry.

I am looking for a material that looks like ivory; white or cream colored, that hits like SS or close to it.

Does it exist?

Juma?
Animal Horn?

Thanks again!

white SS

Think you will go with a ivory or faux ivory sleeved ss-joint.

If you like a one material full joint I would go with aegis.
Have a fullsplice cue with aegis joint and 5x16/14 piloted.
Plays real stiff and solid.

No.

You could try white plastic sleeved over SS. This could be done with
Ivory or Staghorn/buckhorn. But...

The thinner the sleve - the more like SS the performence - I personally would not trust Ivory to hold up, as in,
not crack. Stag is much 'tougher' than ivory, but still has limits.

Hmmm... Interesting question. While I'm not a cue maker, the last 10 years I've tried a bunch of different configurations including a joss (ss 5/16-14 piloted) and the recently bought another joss (AV03 brown phenolic 5/16-14 piloted) they are different. It's not huge, but blindfolded I could definitely tell it was a different cue. Of course, it changes balance point, vibration transfer and other things. I should mention the SS joint cue has a wrap, the other one doesn't.

Somebody else mentioned German nickel, to me a slightly softer hit than stainless.

Recently picked up a durning, antler sleeve over wood 3/8-10. I can't pry it out of my wife's hands.

Any cue is a product of a multitude of different decisions, tip, ferrule, shaft taper, pin, joint material, construction techniques, and we can't forget the wood. Each element contributes a bit... For me, trying different things was the way to go.

When you like the SS hit, recognize other parts played a role and if you are ordering a cue where everything is as close to identical except the joint material, it might be close, but won't probably be the same.

I'm not a cue maker, so take my $0.02 for what they are worth.

YMMV

moose

you might want to hit a few balls with a cue that has a moose antler joint. not the same as ss, but you might like the hit, its very firm but not harsh

Not to hijack this thread, but does moose antler play similar to deer antler? Ive made a couple cues with solid deer antler joints and i love em. I might have to get some moose antler if you think its better though.

I think a SS joint makes a cue play with a dead feel....... There are many other materials that play much crisper.

Can of worms.
Some SS are thin-wall and sleeved over phenolic.
They're not all heavy and thick mounted on wood.
