Joint protectors?

JC

Coos Cues
I cannot for the life of me imagine any actual need for these. What is the peril they are protecting against? I have shafts I've had for decades that the joint surface looks like new and I'm not even that careful. You unscrew the thing and put it in the case which does the protecting. That's it's job.

Maybe I'm missing something here but I don't think so. Am I the only one who has ever questioned these baubles? Oh wait I forgot, they look cool and when you get your stick out and take these bad boys off it strikes fear into your opponent cuz he knows you mean business.

I think that for the most part they are not needed but, for that one time, say you were taking your cue out and it slips from your hand, the jps could save the day. Unlikely, but possible.

For me, the main value I find in using them is while storing cues, the jp's can keep humidity from getting into the shafts. Whether or not this really does anything, I don't know for sure but that's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Beyond all that, the custom ones do look nice.

Best,
Brian kc

I started out making sure every cue I owned had a set and took them on and off every time. After a while it was a pain so like Brian, I just use them on stored cues.

As far as benefit, I dunno. It could protect your cues if you have a cheap case and drop it I guess. Or if the case falls apart... I had bought my wife a cheap knock off case and one night while cashing out at the pool hall the bottom broke off and cues came sliding out. Nothing got broke or damaged, but if they slammed hard the wrong way maybe JP's could have helped. For the record I have bought her a nice custom case that has no chance of the bottom falling out since then.

Very funny. I totally agree.

I always laugh at the proponents of these things. You are more likely to drop the shaft taking those cue protectors off.

Life is simple - you just take the shaft out of the case and screw it onto your butt. Jeeze.

I use them but in Iraq it was worth it cause the dust can get into anything overthere. So i just left them on to this day ill never know when my cue will slip from my hand and make contact with the floor and ruin a thread on.

I had this happen on an older cue i have.

There is no greater chance of the cue slipping from your hand before or after you're installing or removing the protectors, which brings with it additional handling and risk. At some point you must screw the unprotected shaft onto the unprotected butt in order to play. The exposure to danger is always the same time frame for this process.

The more variables the more chance of something bad happening. When I first started using these joint protectors, I found myself trying to put the shaft on with the joint protector in the same hand that was doing the screwing. I immediately thought to myself as everything felt so uncomfortable, that this was really stupid. Of course I could have laid the joint protectors down before I proceeded to screw the shaft on, but as I said above this is another step/variable.

I have a Porper case for bar/league play and you need the j/ps to pull shafts out of the case. Unless you want to turn it upside down and start banging on a table.

I have a case like this. I stuffed the bottom of the hole with wadded up paper towels until I liked the depth my shafts are sitting.

I think they are a pain in the a**, but I still use them just to protect from dust, dirt, grime getting into the shaft and to protect my nice case from getting harmed from the cue joint when I put it in and last but not least they look nice, but again they are pain in the a**. Any cue makers I have talked to about them say they are just a pain in the ass and you're more likely to drop your stick or shaft putting them on or taking them off, which has almost happened to me many times .

The only purpose I use them is to pull the butt and shaft out of the case. My cases are deep, and it makes it easier to pull them out, and they are marked, so I know which butt is where, and what shaft I'm using. Poolrooms are not the best lit places to begin with, and this is a nice feature to have for a such a litle price.

And Yeah, on custom cues, they just look cooler as well

Wow, you're really concerned about what other people do.

In any case. Most people that I know that use them do so because at some point they have had a joint damaged. Seems like a good enough reason to take a simple extra step to protect them. Don't see the harm in it either way or why it should bother anybody else watching.

Who in this thread said they are concerned about what anyone else is doing or bothered by it? What are you reading?

I think he was put off by this statement. "Oh wait I forgot, they look cool and when you get your stick out and take these bad boys off it strikes fear into your opponent cuz he knows you mean business."

Seems like a solution in search of a problem. Or a marketing guy in search of a problem.

Whether you think they serve a useful purpose or just look cool.

Same reason people buy all sorts of doo dads and customize a car or motorcycle.

Why do people buy jewelery? To customize their fingers and ears.

It makes you feel good and there is nothing better than feeling good.

I cannot for the life of me imagine....

Well unless your schizophrenic or possibly in the habit of drug or drunken induced spells of thread starting.....

That would be you. ;)
