He stayed with me for over a month in the mid 80's in Venice Beach. He ran all over L.A. playing pool and getting in action. He made money and beat some good players. I remember his only loser was to Bill Mielke. Junior was stubborn and couldn't believe this guy with the little punch stroke could beat him. But Bill just didn't miss any balls. I tried to point this out to Junior, but he would hear none of it. He kept saying "I can beat this guy". They played two or three times at the House Of Billiards in Santa Monica.
He was living in Colo. Springs back then, with a lady who I did not know. I last saw him at the U.S. Open in 1998 or 99. I hope he is well. He was always a fun guy to be around, and quite ethical in his dealings. He actually chipped in on groceries etc. Junior had a long career, maybe 25-30 years. Sometimes players just get burned out from the lifestyle. Constant travel, looking for games and living day to day. Once I had my first pool room, I never went back to that life.
If anyone sees him in Dallas, please tell him Jay sends his best wishes. I suspect he will show up at Billy Cardones new poolroom there. Maybe out of curiosity more than anything else. I always say, "Once a poolplayer, always a poolplayer."
I always called him "June Bug", so use that name when you see him. He will chuckle.
