Keith Would have Crushed Them

I listened to Keith . . .

I'll agree with you on the first part, but IMO there isn't a line between confidence and recklessness - the ends justify the means. If you make a tough game giving away all sorts of weight, and you lose...you were over-confident and reckless. If you win...you were just that confident in how good you are. I won the silver and bronze medals for team canada at the world kickboxing championships when I was 17 and 18, fighting guys who were bigger, meaner, more experienced, and on paper - probably better fighters, but I wanted it more than anything and had the belief that I was just that good. Was I being reckless then? maybe i just have an admiration for people who aren't afraid to try to beat the odds. who knows ;)

I listened to Keith barking at a local that beat Danny Medina heads up in the mid-eighties, beat Johnny Archer heads up too. When he was ignored Keith was up to offering him the last five when things were interrupted. There is a word for that and it isn't confidence. If you think that Keith was a good bet giving up that spot you are living in a dream world.

"The World's Got the 8" is attributed to Keith McCready when he was hitting 'em strong. I have never heard of any other player with this tagline attributed to them before. I may be wrong. :p
i thought this was keith.

I had the opportunity to watch keith a lot and get lessons in the ?mid or late 90's when he was doing a stretch in new orleans. He was past his *prime* of the 1980's but still could beat anyone on earth on any given day. If you have seen that cueball move in person, then you know for certain that on a small table, he is the greatest that ever lived. On any table he is no worse than 50-50 versus the universe, all players in their prime.

who will bet 'way more' than 50 dimes and still play the same in regards to todays players? none. cornbread red..eddietaylor,
bugs, freddy? anybody who frequented the rack? yeah, there are wayyy too many to name from the past, but who does that today?

i give tons of props to guys like john schmidt and shane b/c they will step up when TAR puts something on when the oppurtunity comes
up, but how many now can say they hunted for action like keith? maybe shane to a degree. also, guys like keith who can hit that
high gear when they're playing for ridiculous amounts are indeed a rarity, espeically today, so to say that "many a gambler is a better
pool player than Keith by your standards because they will bet way more than $50,000 and play exactly the same"...just aint right.

keith could have a million above the lights and he'd still make it look effortless in his day. not too many can say that now, although there are a couple exceptions. and that is IMO a valid way to measure a pool player.

keeping your cool under pressure is how you measure just about anyone at a high level of any sport.
well i played for 50000 two times two years and i played good so to answer you i can.

I'll answer it for you

These are all great replies and great stories but was wondering who everybody thinks is the best on the bar box today, and if they think those players could have beat Keith in his heyday. I see people specifically mention SVB and Corey, and Keith has even commented on here that SVB would be a statue watching him run packages.

I'm on page 2 of this thread, and I'm tired. Going to bed. But the answer is NO. I only saw Keith play a couple of times in the 80's, and not for the really high $$$$$..... And no offense to anyone who plays now, but at that time, there were a few guys on the bar box who will always be above what we have now. Just my opinion. Keith had that high gear, for ANY AMOUNT. There are a lot of really great bar box players, but keith in high gear, takes all their money, buys them lunch and a couple beers.

i guess everyone is forgetting alex p. drilled keith on the barbax with the big rock mudball 5 years ago at the D C C upstaires in the action room..i know i was there and won 300 on the side....

Did the play even

5yrs ago Keith was still way past his prime...so did they play even when Alex beat him?

What would Alex P need from a Prime Keith (circa 1979) on the bar box? The 8? The 7?

I don't know what he'd spot Alex in his prime but playing even I'd say Alex would've had little chance against Keith. Keith was fearsome in his prime, I think a lot of todays players would've been a little intimidated by Keith's mega-offensive style.

No, the game was not even.

No, it was not in 1999.

No, it was not 9-ball.

Are you sure you were there?

Let's not forget that all three times Alex Pagulayan played against Keith McCready in tournaments, to include the U.S. Open, Keith came out on top.

Yes, Alex is a run-out machine, and he would not have had a prayer to beat Keith even when Keith was in his prime on the bar table at any game. When Alex and Keith played at the DCC, Alex was in his prime, Keith was hitting 50 years of age. Alex was 23 years old. Alex would not have liked playing 23-year-old Keith one bit.

Compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges.

Bottom line, Alex won, but it was NOT 9-ball, it was NOT in 1999, and they did NOT play even.

This was the year that we fondly called the DCC, the Durbin City Classic. Eric Durbin was beating on everybody and was rumored to be up about 50 dimes.

This game actually was supposed to be Keith playing Eric Durbin. The two camps, Camp McCready and Camp Durbin, barked back and forth for a few hours. Everybody was there in the main hallway, and there was a crowd of about 100 plus listening, hanging onto every word. Everybody was gunning for Eric Durbin, hoping to get a piece of him. Finally, Eric agreed to play Keith for 10 dimes, but he had to go to his room for a second.

We waited for about 30 minutes, and Eric sent a friend downstairs and said he changed his mind and didn't want to play. That's when Camp McCready and Camp Pagulayan began to bark for another 2 hours.

The game between Alex and Keith finally commenced at 4:15 a.m.

Keith was 49 years old. Alex was 23.

It's like somebody saying they beat Ronnie Allen in one-pocket last week. Well, I can tell you one thing for sure. Thirty-plus years ago, I cannot think of anyone who could have beat Ronnie Allen in one-hole. He would have given Efren a run for his money, but back then, Efren had not hit his prime yet.

These kinds of threads are like saying a boxer just defeated George Foreman. Well, look at how old George Foreman is today. Do you understand what I am trying to say here?

Look, I'm not saying Keith is the best pool player in the world. I'm just saying to compare apples with apples and oranges to oranges. That's all.

Does that help clarify things for you, Roy, for your inquiring mind?

might have been 98' i got a pix with alex just after the match...there was a bum hanging around and alex bet him 100.00 he coulnt sign sum song...the bum busted it out and alex gave him 100 pacos...and i remember sitting in the bar with shannon dalton after he was wolfing at larry nevel...dalton was all "your a "B" player stack it up".and i thought nevles backer was going to kill him..i know the 300 was sweeeeet!but yur right i wasnt there......all i know is it wasnt even close alex made keith his biotch.....

Thanks for the report :)

But I would still like to know what game, what hcp etc. I am not interested in discussing which player was the best in his prime and things like that, I've never cared much for these threads, it's just that I like to read about gambling matches.

Oh, and for the record. I, and only I, was the very best player in the world when I was in my prime!

I think it was between 9:13 PM and 9:16 PM the second Monday in February in 1997. No one would beat me back then!!!

Glory days it was.

Nope, Alex did not make Keith look like his "biotch," but I'm making you look like mine in this thread.

It was not in 1998. You are way off base. In fact, I now don't believe you were even there. Show me your picture, and I'll show you my several dozen pictures of the same event. I was there, "biotch."

I have no idea what you're talking about: black dude, orange bag, eyeballing cash. SHEESH!

Just for the record, I was there. I watched the match, all 10 minutes of it, between Alex and Keith. In fact, I was right there, up front and close. Imagine that! My memory might not be what it used to be, but it sure as hell is better than yours.
