Kim Davenport

"Cynical perspective"? I contributed to what I deemed as an unfruitful, for lack of a better word, thread about an American legendary player named Kim Davenport.

Leave it to you to find fault with the words I write on this forum. Guess that should be expected from you, though. You and I have had this dance before.

JAM

LOL...yeah you contributed to the thread after you got your snide little sucker-punch in. I was merely stating that it was good to see a great player/ business man, like Kim (who actually has something to show for his accomplishments) playing again since his career was almost ended by a freak accident a few years ago.

The funny this is, you and I had always gotten along until April when Corvette started a happy birhtday thread for me and you found out he and I are close friends. You immediately started hijacking that thread and continuing an argument that you and he were having in another thread. I have never taken sides in any of the arguments between you and him, nor the dozens of other members you are constantly attacking. Since then, you have taken every opportunity possible to attack me, both in the public forum and in PMs. I am going to tell you in public the same thing I told you in your last PM...you are petty and childish.

I have played pool all over the Southeast and everyone that knows me, from Pros to novices, will tell you of my dedication to this sport and my character. I have never double-steered anyone, I have never knocked anyones action, I have never dumped anyone and if Im playing, Im fighting my hardest to win every game. So, if you think Im gonna just sit here and let someone whos knowledge of the game is 99% something they have been told rather than knowlede they learned or earned by making their own scarifices, attack me.... you are out of your f'ing mind!

Now this is your opportunity to show that you are mature enough to just let this go and drop it. If its a war you want, then its a war you will get. And I will not say anything on this forum that I am not willing to say in person....Lets see if you can just drop it.

Good Post, would read again. By the way, please refrain from starting any threads before you get the ok from JAM. I can't believe you would start a thread about Kim Davenport in a tourney in Atlanta. I mean, what is this a POOL forum?

His wife, whose name I cannot remember, is probably one of the nicest pool player's ladies I have met on the tournament trail.

Kim Davenport's wife is sweet and so very nice. I really enjoyed getting the chance to meet her. What a cool person she is. And she is beautiful as well. They say beauty is only skin deep, but this lady has it going both ways, inside and out.

JAM,
Her name is Aida Davenport.

This is a great statement. Once again in my life this weekend, I was reminded that 98% of the world has the same attitude when it comes to money. Glad to see Southpaw is in the 2% that has integrity.

He was reported to have moved to Georgia to open a pool room with Johnny Archer. A professional friend of mine visited before it was opened; but was REALLY impressed with the facility and business plan. It sounded like heaven for the serious players in the area. It would be nice to hear a report from someone who has visited.

Kim in fact did go in with Johnny on a room in Georgia - but it was an existing room they bought, formerly "The Pool Room" operated by a fellow AZBer, "thebestpoolroom". They took over not long before I moved back to the area in early October of last year - I recall that because I remember reading about it here on AZB, about the party they were having, and thinking I was just going to be a few weeks late :(

It's a great room, though mostly unchanged since the change in ownership. I just wish they'd put in some smoke-eaters or something similar.

Well lets get back to Kim himself. After his eye injury Im sure he had to recover and also prepare himself for the injury suit that he duly needed to pursue as he makes his living with his eye. So naturally I and others did not expect him to jump back into the game in a short time.
Since I have been living in Cali for over 40 years I have been watching and admiring Kim. I used to see him as a road warrior playing some tough back room action. I lost some good money betting against him when my home boy Hawaiian Brian engaged in a long tough battle against him. I gained some big respect for him after that. I never did like Kim cause he was so tough and could jump in your face if he felt he was on the short end of a contradiction. He was not shy about showing his feelings. He was a tough big strapping California guy and could take care of himself.
Since he got into business and married his beautiful wife, and I believe her name is Sally, he seems to have really matured himself and opened himself up to people. He has taken defeat as well as victory like a real pro. He is an inspiration. I saw him get beat by Efren Reyes in a one pocket tournament in a great battle for a top spot. The look on both warriors face was priceless. One from Kims admiration for Efren and one of respect from Efren. In Sacramento at the Hard Times Jubilee, which I believe Keith M was there, Kim was a model of professionalism and coolness while other young bucks like Tony CHohan and Amar Kang were doing their act. I dont remember who won it all but I think Kim, Santos, and Rodney were in the top three.
I wanted to chime in here not because I had any info but as a respect to Kim Davenport. Someone who has dedicated himself to the game we love. Someone who should be honored. Someone who made me aware of my values and how I wanted to be perceived. I hope others can show him this respect.
Well said!!!

While Kim was recuperating he was the pro commentator on Sky Sports British broadcast on the 2006 World Pool Championship. The Brits really like him and I must say Kim looked good. But I did feel he was uncomfortable in the format. The Brits do their broadcasting very well stemming from their years of National broadcasts of their snooker scene. Kim did do an admirable job.
I think while he had his eye trouble he was a non playing captain of the American team on the Mosconi Cup. He was one who could keep Earl under control and I know Earl would not want to mess with Kim.
What I'd like to know is who was Kim's mentors. His role models. I know he was around Rempe and Richie Florence often.

Oops now I know where I got Sally. Sally is Rempe's wife I believe. I use to watch him and Kim at tournaments together.

Kim is from Modesto originally and apparently when he was young (late teens?) he would be staked by local room owners Dave Ferroni Sr and Barry Bettencourt. One time a hot-shot road player came through town, some of you know him, named Cold Dickson. Anyways, he heard Kim could play pretty sporty and offered him the last two, IF Kim would play for a thousand. Kim went outside to discuss it with his backers, they asked him what he thought. The story goes that Kim went back in the pool hall and told him that HE could have the last two, IF Cole would play for two thousand! Kim won the match, that's the way I heard it.
We miss Kim here in Modesto. He was the one name we could drop and NOBODY could claim to have the upper hand in 9b, with a few exceptions of course.........syott Marc
PS>>>>>>>>>>Of course that was before the emergence of our newest champion, Noel Campos, winner of the 2008 Open Womens Division at the BCA!

With a high finish of fifth place at Columbus, Davenport was the only player in 1998 to place in the money at each of the eight Camel Pro Billiards Series tournaments. Davenport is an originator of Target Pool and the proprietor of Championship Billiards in Modesto, CA. This veteran of professional pool first picked up a cue at age 10, and became a professional in 1985. Kim and wife Aida have one son and two grandchildren. When he?s not playing billiards, Davenport can be found on the golf course.

1997, 1990, Sands Regency; 1994, Pro Tour Championship; 1990, Player of the Year; 1989, McDermott Masters.

I didn't know he was born in Oklahoma! :p

Here's another cool Kim picture, courtesy of AzBilliards: http://www.azbilliards.com/camel/profiles/showplayer.cfm?playernum=21

This article has the spelling of "McAlistair" like this, but when I Google it, it comes up as "McAlester."

Is there anyone who can confirm which is correct, as far as where Davenport was born? TIA!

Also, I found something about Kim Davenport creating something called "Target Pool": http://64.233.169.104/search?q=cach...Davenport"+golf+pool&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=8&gl=us

It is hard as hell to read with the yellow font! :o

However, I would like to learn more about it to include in my Kim database. Here is what I copy and pasted:

The basic idea of Target Pool is simple: To present the trainee with a number of exercises, and record and evaluate his or hers performance after each shot. Based on the performance a new exercise is chosen, or the previous is repeated.

In addition to this, a golf-like handicap is introduced, allowing users at different levels to compete. It can also be used to track a particular users' progress over time.

A shot is evaluated simply by placing a "target" on the pool table and assigning points depending how close the cue ball comes to the center.

According to Google searches, Kim created "Target Pool." I would like to learn more about it. :)

Kim still has the gamble in him as well. After Stevie eliminated him in the tourney in Atlanta yesterday 9-3, he asked Stevie if he wanted to play some. It all stimmed from a discussion about the wing ball going on Stevies break every time (it was rack your own). Stevie said "well lets just play 10 ball", but Kim declined. They agreed to play 9 ball 10 ahead for 10k, but it was cancelled due to something about tapping the balls to get them frozen....would have been a great match to sweat. JMO.

I pulled out of the race, Billy. I'm getting too old to run races.

I'd rather sit on the sidelines and watch 'em than run in 'em. :p

This has been followed by 15 more posts in this thread alone.

You started this flame war, offered mistaken "information" about Kim's injury, made a ton of "unfruitful" posts, and now you're the victim.

Time for you to "sit on the sidelines".

Mark (your next target of abuse)

Target pool was fun, I used to have that! You place a thin cloth target which is about 16"X16" on the table. You set up different shots and play shape to land on the center of the circle. The closer you get to the center, the more points you accumulate. I enjoyed it.:D

JAM gave me a bad rep for my post to this thread. How childish, just like all 10,000 of her posts. How did I already know this was coming?

I expect I'll get another one for this.

Mark (just the latest on JAM's list of people to persecute)

I miss them both, Kim is happy in Ga I talk to him from time to time. It was a big move for him to say the least, it took him a few LOOONG weeks to get settled in but he did, has a great house, wife and business. He is a great guy and friend of mine fo years. Martin his friend Caddyed for Rocco Mediate for along time-who is a play off with tiger now, its a good sweat for me, I hope Rocco beats Tiger.
