You're right. There are some who always boast and talk on this forum about bet, bet, bet, bet, bet, bet, bet, putting down pro players like Larry Nevel who was only defending himself against personal attacks.

It is rare for anything to happen with these people who keep wanting to bet, bet, bet, bet, bet. They sure do know how to talk a good talk, a dialogue which has a ring of similarity to other posters who want to bet, bet, bet, bet, bet, but never seem to come up with a game.

Larry Nevel is a professional player, well respected in the pool community; a gentle giant, if you will. Larry does back his game, unlike some of these forum members who only want to say

bet, bet, bet, bet, bet, bet.

Sounds like a lot of nit chatter to me.

Very rarely does anything come out of this chatter on here. It appears to me there are lots of heroes on here with no money or are nits Unfortunately, I have stirred up a few games that didnt turn out so well. I staked Cory against Shane in TAR race to 100, not to mention a couple other games where I got robbed! Larry says he will play and that is great. Like I stated earlier in this thread, if he wants to play Cory or Shane now, all he has to do is make a time and date and get it on. Just waiting to hear when and make sure the guys betting on him want to bet something high. Thats no nit chatter, I promise.

Good point. If they played when Nick was in his prime and playing at his very best, he may be competitive against Nevel in his current form. However, I seriously doubt this is a foregone conclusion as the poll results would lead one to believe.

The game has changed, the equipment has improved, and players skill levels have evolved. I seriously doubt if John McEnroe in his prime would have a snowballs chance in hell of beating Federer in his current form. That doesn't mean he wasn't a great champion in his time.

You are trying to compare Roger Federer, one of the greatest players in his sport of all time, to Larry Nevel??? Federer is arguably the most dominant player of all time. I don't know much, but I can assure you that pool has not evolved so much because of equipment and such, that Nick Varner in his prime just might be competitive with a current day Larry Nevel. That might be the craziest thing I have seen in some time.

um for what its worth

Chad,

I doubt Larry can find anyone that is mad enough at their money to put Larry in playing Corey or SVB for what BC wants to bet. Larry mentioned playing on his table in SC for 2-3,000 and i am sure BC wants to put at least 10k into play. If it does happen, anyone that wants to get down on the rail on Larrys' side, don't worry folks Billy will cover the rail too..... Don't for one minute think he won't! Some here know that he staked Coreys end in the first Action Challenge but that is far from the most $ he's ever put into play on one match. Hell, it's far from the most he's staked in several matches..... Of the woofers that are on AZ he is the one that is the real deal! He can't play a lick himself but he's not scared to ship it on someone else....

hold on

Easy Saw!!! I can't play a lick, but Ill still go broke getting the 7 ball from your dead ass in Bear's basement. Besides, I am the 2nd best player from McArthur!! I heard a kid there is hitting them pretty good so I am putting him slightly ahead of me. Did I tell you, there has been a Bubba sighting???

#1- I'll sign a lifetime contract on that 7 ball. IIRC, I'm up a surf and turf. #2- Being the 2nd best player from McArthur is like being the 2nd best fisherman in the Sahara desert, isn't it? When McArthur gets a second traffic light, being the 2nd best player from McArthur might actually mean something.... Too bad you're not from Jackson County, thats where the real good players come from... #3- Tis the season for Bubba, he's long overdue...

Ill take the 7 ball for another surf and turf, and a night of all u can drink. You just let me know. If I beat you, would that mean that I am next in line to play Larry Nevel? Just wondering??? Can you believe these guys on here? Comparing Nevel to Roger Federer? WOW??? Van Boeing must be 4 times the player Michael Jordan was. That would then make Efren officially GOD! But what do I know?

I have seen both gamble. For what it's worth, here's my take. Short race, flip a coin, as with most players. But...if they play for days, all games, it's not even close. That short, curly-haired fella will wear him down with that emotionless effort. Steady. Steady. The only way the younger crowd can compare the two is by watching today's Larry. They haven't seen the "prime Varner." He's capable of not making mistakes for days (almost). Plus, Varner has won what? A couple of local tourneys? Come on guys. He's done it all. Sure, Larry is explosive. He can string them with most. But, Nick. Oh, Nick. No Mistake Nick. Larry will be mighty upset with "Hey, you get to kick Nick." That will take it's toll on you. One Pocket? Come on.

I wish Nick Varner posted here.
We could here what he thinks about this match up and wouldnt it be wonderful for him to share some of his gambling stories!
Maybe someone from his hometown could tell him about this site and maybe ask him to log in so we can get his views.

Sorry dude but I dont have the money or sponsors to be able to go to all these tournaments. I hav played in the BCA 3 times, us open 5 times, and derby city like 6 times. Did you read my post Jackass? I said any american player can get played. I never said I was the best or even referred to me being the best, I said any american player can get action!!!! At least a couple of thousand. I think thats pretty sporty on my end to offer some action to any american player. Hell, everone else on here wants action but wont play anyone who has a chance to beat them. I never woofed saying I will rob everyone....I am saying just call and come down and get some of this weak ass no big tournament winning suckers money!!!!!!!!

Why are you responding as if I was talking to you? I was responding to a person who said they put you in the top 20 of all the players in the world, and I said to him that I disagree with him. You did not have to put your 2 cents in at all, I was not talking to you.

Now that's some major chutzpah !!

so is larry coming to the cape coral florida tour event

Not sure. I can find out for you if you'd like. It depends on what's going on closer to home for him that weekend.

Like I said, I could find out if he's going to be there.

I'm pretty sure he opened a challenge for anyone (including those two) to head to Easley and play him. So if he isn't going to be there, are they going to head by him and play? Just curious.

If I'm not mistaken, Larry plays in every GSBT event. He plays in other events during open dates. I believe there is a conflict with the Florida event. After all the GSBT is a "Tour" which he supports.

I just got a text from Larry saying he won't be in Florida. I'm guessing for the reason Roadkill mentioned.

The game hasn't changed too much since 1989 when Nick was at the peak of his game. Worsted cloth and low-deflection shafts are about the biggest changes I can think of (I'm pretty sure I remember jump cues being around at that time, but it could be argued that they weren't as perfected as they are now). Not to mention, if anything, the current game of 9-ball has been dummied up a bit from the game they played in 1989.

As far as players' skill levels evolving, I will concede that there are more great players than there were in 1989, but I can't say that I agree that today's players have evolved in skill level beyond that of the top players from just 20 years ago. If Nick, Sigel, Buddy and Earl were all in their primes today, they would be as good as anyone on the planet right now. The game hasn't evolved enough to change that [yet].

In that aspect, I dont think it will ever change. The only thing that beats near-perfect is perfect, and all three of them played like either one of those two the majority of the time.
