I went to the eye docters the other day and he told me that I am a candidate for laser eye surgery. I was wondering if anyone has had it done and if they liked it or not? And how it effects your pool game? Or if I should wait until I am older?

I had it done. Worth every penny.
 
I immediately improved at least one ball in 9 ball.

I haven't had it done but am seriously considering it. I know a few people who have. Both have given good reports of it. BUT I have also heard of people having to back and have it done after a couple years.

Mike how did you do in the DCC... I'm in Maine too... up on the northeast coast. Good to see you getting around you have a bright future in the game.
 
I had it done 2 & 1/2 years ago and is has been great! I see better than 20/20 now and have had no problems. I was a -12.75 in both eyes (virtually blind without lenses). The did the procedure and I went back to the hotel slept 4 hours woke up and could read the small print at the bottom of the ESPN screen with no lenses. Go to TLC to have it done (same place Tiger Woods went - if its good enough for Tiger its good enough for me). You can also write it off on your taxes.

I tried to have it because my vision in one eye had deteriorated over the years and I could tell that it had worsened. I had 20-15 in both eyes most of my life and now only have 20-15 in one and 20-20 in the other. The eye doctor told me that I should probably see a psychiatrist if I wanted to get back the 20-15 in the one eye. :o

Do a SEARCH in this forum for "laser surgery" and you will find many more posts about this subject. YOu might even do an ADVANCED SEARCH and search only through THREAD SUBJECTS.

Talk to a few people, get as much information as possible. I have an ex-girlfriend who is an optomitrist that I've kept in touch with over the years. She remains quite skeptical about the procedure. There are a number of potential side effects - halos, dry eye are most common. If you're set on doing it, you're going to want to track down the best doctor in your area. It's not going to be cheap and the little I know about it, ignore the $500 per eye doctors. Most of my friends who have had it done are very happy but a number of them did have complaints for the first few months.

I had it done about 5 or 6 years ago. The only side effect that I've found
is the halos around lights at night. To this day, they are still there, but I've
gotten so used to them that I dont notice them unless is zoom in on them.
I would do it again in the blink of an eye.:wink:

The best thing that ever happened to my pool game.

Just remember: "you get what you pay for", so don't get a cheapie doctor. Make sure you get followups in the price you pay. Don't be afraid or show displeasure if you have to get them redone. This happens a lot I think and it happend to my left eye which was only corrected to 20/80 the first time.

If you have dry eyes, the best advice I can give to you is to take Theratears tablets every day. Fish oil, Omega 3 fatty acids, all kinds of good things for dry eyes and recommended by Whitten and Associates, one of the country's best. As a matter of fact, the nerve they cut has something to do with tearing, so you have to be prepared for what could happen.
 
living in Atlanta and previously working with Emory one of the leaders in this surgery. I would caution you to be very careful, this surgery has a percentage of people who have side effects like rainbow images and halos that affect vision also some will see changes over time afterward in clarity.

Lasik was the absolute BEST MONEY I'VE EVER SPENT on anything in my lifetime! Awesome results both in and out of the pool hall! I had my surgery in 2003 and I'm still seein' like a hawk!

It's a bargain at twice the price!

My dad had it done, had a semi-bad experience, because his cornea was thin and tended to roll up during the healing process. He was uncomfortable for a few weeks. Even through all of this he indicated he would gladly do it again.

I had the same procedure and I hit a couple balls the night I had the surgery - I was too light sensitive to enjoy it, but it wasn't unbearable. I had dry eyes for about 3 days and an increased sensitivity to light for about a week, but was one of the best experiences of my life.

Just think - no more dirty glasses, fog, frames pushing into your temples or nose. I haven't needed to go back to the optomitrist since my first anniversary of the surgery. And everyone is right on, it will help not just your pool game but everything else you see. The halo affect shamadam mentioned is not any real difference than the glare you get with eyeglasses.

I just had it done (PRK) two months ago. I am now 20/20 and it was a great decision. Especially since I never wore my glasses when playing pool. The recovery time for PRK is a little longer than LASIK, the doctor said it may take up to 6 months for my vision to be totally dialed in, but it seems perfect to me now. No halos, no light sensitivity.
 
Make sure to get an opinion from more than one source.

I happen to go to an Ophthalmologist who at one time was head eye doctor for the Boston Bruins and the Celtics. He is very well known. I originally started seeing him when I was a kid because of some issues in my right eye that I was born with.

The first thing he told me was than my prescription was not the best for the surgery. I wear bifocals and have for a long time. He indicated the surgery could correct my long distance vision however I would still need to have reading glasses. Or you could go the other way. Someplace in the middle seemed to be a compromise on both ends.

The other thing he indicated was that my cornea was thin. Lasics involves cutting a slip in the cornea and creating a flap etc. If your cornea is to thin this procedure can have complications especially the halos.

There was a different procedure used before Lasics called Radial keratotomy. This involves making a bunch of smaller slits in a radial pattern around the eye. These slits do not extend as deep into the cornea as Lasics. The healing time is longer than lasics and you also wear a "band aid" contact lens during healing.

In my specific case he recommended RK over Lasics.

I want to get the procedure done but I have not done it yet. I still have concerns. I guess you can call be a big chicken. I finally got some new contact lenses last year that I can see out of better than ever (except reading which is OK). My night vision is bad and has been since I was in my early 30s. I am worried about halos that might force me off the road at night by making my night vision that much worse.
 
i had lasik done in 05, at first i had dry eyes and all that but they told me to expect it for about a month, since then i have had no problems at all with my "perfect" eyes. prior to the procedure i had to wear popbottle glasses but never would except when driving at night, it took a while to get over what a pool table really looked like haha. as many others here have said, it was the best money i have ever spent and i would do it again without hesitation.
 
I guess I was afraid it would mess up my pool game a little. Maybe change whole way I aim at a ball or something like that. I am going to look into it when I go over seas. Possible the same doctor that did efrens and chemats. I feel like I seem to young to have it done but when I aim, I no I am aiming off center in a sence because I am right eye dominate. Shafts pointing a direction that Im not aiming. Some good players Ive talked to don't even understand it. But I am going look into it a little more. Thanks

Are you left handed?
 
Right handed, but when I aim up left it seems like I aim dead straight.

I have looked into this a little myself and asked around. Based on your shot making, it is very hard to imagine you don't have amazing vision, but I guess you have learned to correct for it. If you don't mind me asking, what is your vision? I ask because my reservation is that my vision isn't bad enough. See, I have like 20/40 in my right eye and 20/30 in my left eye. The irritating thing for me is that my 2 eyes are not equal. The eye doctor gave me a contact for just my right eye. When driving or just hanging out, my vision seems amazing. However, with pool, I can tell something weird is going on because now my right eye is better, and it seems to change my perception of how to aim.

Let me know what you find out. Also, if you know Andy M from the Country Club tourney on Thursdays, talk to him. He had it done like 3-5 years ago and is 100% happy.
