Let's Bring The Discussion Of Pool Player As Job Over Here

Two players enter only one may leave

You say the problem is that people just don’t enjoy watching pool. Do you believe there is a solution to the problem out there somewhere?

Of course there's a solution to any problem. The key is to look outside the current paradym......and more into creating entertainment.

If Duck Dynasty, Pawn Stars and Breaking Bad can be entertaining so can a classic "underworld game" like pool......people will always be drawn to the "underbelly" of subcultures for entertainment.......thus the success of 'The Sopranos,' 'Casino,' and 'The Godfather'.

Sports are about creating excitement and an emotional attachment. My suggestion is a "Match to the Death" - TWO PLAYERS ENTER ONLY ONE MAY LEAVE - anyone want to "put their quarters up?"

Problem? What problem? There is no problem. The top 25 are doing just fine playing tournaments.

I would beg to differ Cleary...The top 3 or 4, may doing "just fine" (with good sponsor's)..The rest are just like Leah...happy to be doing something they love, with NO chance at ever obtaining wealth, or security !

Pool is not the exception, it's just one of the many examples.

Very true, and this can be said of any other profession$: Many, many, many professional people are struggling financially, simply doing something they have a passion for, or are trained to do in life....it's certainly not just pool players.

Just the A's to give an example:

Actor
Actuary
Administrator
Agent
Agrarian
Air Traffic Controller
Alchemist
Alderman
Ambassador
Anesthesiologist
Analyst
Animal Trainer
Antique dealer
Arborist
Archeologist
Architect
Archivist
Art Director
Artist
Assayer
Assessor
Astrologer
Astronaut
A Pool Player
Astronomer
Astrophysicist
Athlete
Attorney at law -- also lawyer or solicitor
Accountant (Incl. Auditor)
Author

There's members of all these professions that are currently out of work and struggling to make ends meet. Pool is not the exception, it's just one of the many examples.

You may have finally come upon a 'brilliant' avenue to explore !..That would be similar to 'UFC' or 'MMA', with no referee's, and two guy's that hated each other ! ..I'm sure the whole world would tune in to watch a "Hunger Games" type show !

But wait !...Wouldn't we run out of pro-players, in a VERY short time ???

Sorry, bad idea (again) Wil-ey ! :o

That's ok, I'll volunteer to be the first player.

Of course we have to play 'Two Shot Shoot Out' rules. ;)

I always wanted to play a match to the death, it would be the absolute greatest way to exit this earth for a dedicated pool player.

You hit the nail on the head when you said sports are about emotional attachment and/or excitement. That is where televised pool is pretty lacking.

There is no context or backdrop for televised pool match, for example the ones shown on ESPN.

Even if you know who the players are (which is a very small minority), why should I care if the Asian girl beats the Austrian girl in one semi or the English girl beats the Irish girl in another semi? People just don't have a personal stake in the matches, so there isn't the emotional attachment. And as much as I respect and am in awe of the way those women run racks, it really isn't that exciting to watch, especially for a layperson that has no idea how difficult that is. In one sense, the perfection is lacking drama. They don't miss very often so it really looks ho-hum to most eyes.

I think that's where UFC really did it right and took off. They created a reality show at the front end of the reality show bubble where you got to see the fighters train for 12 weeks in the show, learn their back stories, and see their personalities and really develop a rooting interest or dislike, which really brings viewership either way. Thus, when these fighters graduated from the show to the PPV's where they are really buttering their bread, there was a whole group of people tuning in and buying to either see the guy they liked win or the guy they hated hopefully get his ass kicked.

That said, I really just don't see an avenue for pool to ever become successful on TV and I think JCIN has done a phenomenal job of explaining why.

Wait until you get to the Pees. I'm in there as a Professional Procrastinator.

I just kept putting work off until I retired. It was a tough row but I finally did it.

it's not about "IF", it's a matter of "WHEN".

Anything can be made entertaining on TV.....there's countless examples of this, from Ducks, to Dukes (of Hazzard).....it's not about "IF", it's a matter of "WHEN".

I predict pool will have a weekly presence on TV within the next 12 months...no one knows how successful or unsuccessful it will be, only time will tell.

I agree that there is some absolutely ridiculous shows on television that are made entertaining, but I would counter that in the examples you gave, those shows have a plot and story line, which is still what is missing from pool.

Obviously no show has a plot, theme, and story line until someone scripts it.....it never happens "on it's own".

The thought that pool is "the exception" to everything seems to be the common trend these days. This is an illusion, nothing more, nothing less.

Please stop using duck dynasty as an example of success. Like many other shows through the years, it will have the public's attention for a fleeting moment. I believe the ipt was successful...for a moment.
Quack is the teacher.
(Do you get offended by our___is the teacher jokes? I hope not.)

I need to learn to put the quote I'm replying to, how do I do that? Anyone?

Just hit the quote area in the bottom right of the post, then type away and then hit submit.

edit: After reading the rest of the thread, I see someone already gave you that info.

"Anything" can be "made" entertaining on "TV". Just put a person "on" TV, give them "jokes" and voila, instant "entertainment". Heck, it worked for Arsenio, right?

Oh, that's right, it didn't.

The quotation mark is the teacher.

Life is about passion....there's never been a case of anyone on their death bed agonizing over not making more money in their life.......it's not even on their list.

Pool players are more like artists, and musicians who look at life as an adventure....realizing that a life filled with regrets is worse than a thousand deaths.

Aren't there enough people in the world that hate their jobs, but love the "security". I see the look on their faces and wish they could experience just a "touch" of inside happiness. ;) 'The Game{of Life}is the Teacher'

I feel even stronger that it will succeed......and such is life.
