Little to no pool since May 2018, time for carbon fiber???

Well, just got the certificate of occupancy for the new house, so I guess the missus and I might as well go ahead and move in. Don't have any trim up yet, but we are ornery and are in the process of milling reclaimed heart pine to trim it out with, DIY, so it will happen slowly.

Anyway, digressions aside, my mind is starting to turn to the possibility of actually setting up my table and playing again in the next several months or so. Since I'm rusty as hades, I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and pick up a carbon fiber shaft to play with going forward??? After what is going to approach a 2 year layoff, I'm wondering if I might as well try to adjust to something new when I start practicing and playing again. Looking at the GO website...looks pretty neat.

Thoughts?
 
Well, you sound like you have an interest in trying one, can afford it, and have nothing to lose skill-wise. I say “give it a go” and let us know how it works out for you.

im getting one made for the heck of it, i still will have my players sp as a back up if all else fails

They're here to stay and definitely worth trying. I'm still using my MezzHybridPro but i have hit a few cf shafts and they are impressive. Of the ones i've tried the Cuetec felt/sounded/played the best, next would be Revo 12.9 as i prefer that size. The GoCustoms are said to be quite good and have built a pretty strong following.

Oh, for sure it's the indian, not the arrow. But I kinda like the idea of CF for the few reasons that Dr. Dave wrote about. I have never used any sort of LD shaft of any kind and have played with the usual maple shaft for all of my 24 or so years playing the game. Plus, F it, why not try something else. $400 or so won't bust the bank either way. Hell, I spend more than double that monthly eating out, lol.:D
 
Black CF shaft .

I notice thw guys winning , some have the CF shaft , some do not , I also notice the guys with Black CF shafts were winning before . So I see no noticable difference same guys winning .
 
I made a little video illustrating some examples of spin shots where switching to a LD shaft will be harder at first due to unfamiliar deflection but after your brain attunes to the shaft I personally feel you can approach with more confidence. Again, won’t make you play better patterns but I do think makes one kind of shot easier once you’ve adapted.

Ah, I miss those shots. Can't wait to play again...will be fun.

I think it is a great time to make the swap or at least test the waters!

I used to play snooker decades ago, more decades than I like to consider. I got a few chances to play on a snooker table not too long ago, with my pool cue of course. Folks, you haven't seen deflection until you fire a ten foot shot with that little cue ball using a pool cue! The only shots I was making consistently were feel shots, for some reason I could shoot a big swooping curve and run a ball two or three feet down a rail.

Then along came Jones, errr, JoeyA. He pulled his skinny REVO out, 11.8 shaft. Between the lower deflection of any 11.8mm shaft and the properties of the REVO those little balls were just begging to get into holes!

Give the black shafts a try. I think they are going to have a big piece of the market especially at the pro level. Note that other manufacturers jumped on the bandwagon in a hurry. The CF isn't super better but they are enough better that they will be winning tournaments in close competition. As people get their butts kicked with the CF more will get on board. I'm not shooting much myself so I am sticking to wood. If I was gambling nightly or playing tournaments often I would shell out for the REVO in a heartbeat and I am usually the last one to move from traditional equipment and methods.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm hoping to re-engage with the game in 2020, and hell, I may even want to improve...;) With any luck, I'll have another 20-30 more years of playing, so what the hey.

Well, if you go the CF route and don't like it, keep it to yourself. Or at least be very cautious about speaking against them on here. If CF is not good for you, blame on yourself, not the shaft! lol

I’ve only got to hit a couple of the cf shafts and I just don’t like them. Now if I had one and could play with it everyday maybe I could get used to it. However I’m not going to pay $300-$500 for a shaft just to see if I like it.

If you can afford one and want to try one by all means go ahead theres no piece of equipment that’s perfect for everyone.
 
Well, it's a new day and a new year and I'm now thinking that it would be a shame to separate this equipment. What a nicely executed and fun cue by Kelly Peterson/MVP cues.

hpII from Mezz was my favorite shaft for years, and it is actually very good shaft until I've tried the Meucci Pro, then I made the swap, I also have Meucci CF coming on the way very soon, so I can't wait to try it, I might stick to The Pro shaft since I like wood, but I will still give Meucci CF a try, if it doesn't work ill keep it for breaking :P
