I agree with this....
Action and travelling players make the game exciting! I'd rather have a guy roll into town for a few days that can really play. Some one to cheer against. Most of our tournaments in the Toronto area everyone likes eachother so there is no drama there.
Even if the guy does leave town with the cash it's fun to watch and as we are demonstrating fun to talk about.
As far as what they played for I'm sure someone that was there may have the answer. My guess would be the same as yours $1000 a set.
I was out in knoxville, Tennessee on business and had been hanging out at one of the local pool halls. You know just making friends with the locals not taking their money or anything.
Then one night, these two preppy looking guys, I've heard that one of them is John something... from Chatanooga maybe? come in and are obviously better than anyone in the room. They talk the older brother of the guy I've been hanging out with into playing getting the six out on the big table.
These guys are all bar box players. So they play one set for $100 and then the older brother quits....
Well I had been watching, and while anyone who knows me knows that I don't play for much money very often, I had made a tripover to the ATM and gotten out a couple of hundred dollars.
I tell them that if they give me the same spot, that I'll play him. they say no way that I'm better than that guy. They hadn't seen me play at all. I told them that I was breaking even with the other guys younger brother who wasn't even as good as him, and then they offer me the seven.
I take the seven and I spank him 9-2.
The other guy (Who I'm sure was the better player being held in reserve) says I'm not as good as my friend here, I'll play you even.
So I play him even and it ends up 7-2 and 7-5.
It's like four or five in the morning, and the place closes at 2, they're vacuuming and obviously wanting us to leave. These two guys were heading down to Atlanta for a tourney and had about twelve thousand on them and wanted to keep playing.
They asked how long I was in town for and I said till Sunday. They said they'd be back in on Sunday night and asked if we could play again.
I said sure but my plane left at noon on Sunday so I didn't get to play them.
the funny thing is, that a week or so later, the kid that had sat there watching, calls me at three in the morning wanting to put me in action, but I'm back in California by then.
It just goes to show that people like to watch new blood.
I just didn't like seeing those two road players take complete advantage of those guys like that otherwise I wouldn't have played for money.
