Lori Shampo

I guess you read into things what you want to. Fine, she was the greatest player ever, knew every shot ever known, plus some that aren't even known, never lost to anyone. So sorry to add some FACTS to the forum. Sheesh. Why on earth would you or anyone else think that I was putting her down?? Just because I, as many others have said in the past, said that compared to the men, she was very beatable?

Neil, then why is one of her friends so upset with you?

Neil, this is your original post.........I played her one time in the mid to late 80's for the cash. All I can say, is that I really wasn't very impressed. I beat her pretty bad, and made shots that she said she had never seen before and afterwards I ended up teaching them to her. I always hear about how great she was, and, maybe she really was. But, I never saw it. ????????????

You're entitled to an opinion as we all are however, opinions should only be offered when the time is right or appropriate. Your statement wasn't appropriate given what the thread was about. Had it been your opinion on how she played and asked everyone their thoughts fine but it wasn't.
Your statement was as appropriate as telling a story about how a friend cheated on his wife but you're telling it at his funeral in front of family and friends. There's a place and time for that and it isn't here or now.

You don't seem to want to see that point. It was out of place period and yes, given the thought behind this particular thread and having known Lori, it very much offended me.
It had nothing to do with thinking she was perfect.........you missed the point entirely.

I almost hate to ask this because I'm afraid of what the answer might be, but did she stay clean? And, if you know, when and from what did she die? It was a compelling video, I couldn't stop watching once she started talking. She could have made a lot of money touring the country and telling her story on college campuses.

A Google search turned up some information (if this is the same Lori Ann Shampo) that indicates that she relapsed and had an unfortunate last few years.

"Lori Ann Shampo - Sentenced on August 17, 2001, to five to 20 years for the crime of armed robbery. The commutation was granted for medical reasons and was based on the affirmative recommendation of the Michigan
Parole Board. The commutation was granted on October 31, 2003. Ms. Shampo died on November 14, 2003."

Hey Jay. Nice thread ! Very informative and very interesting. Although very, very tragic.

As far as we can remember, she robbed the store for money...not drugs.

She was at the end of her rope about then. She worked hard at a golf course (grounds maint.) but it didn't pay much and with the baby and all she just lost it.

Desparate people do desparate things sometimes.

I know she wanted to make it back into tournaments and even went to a couple but she didn't have much help on that side of the state. She would have gotten more help around here but it wouldn't have been the right enviroment for her.

Thanks for the post, Jay. Lori was obviously a beautiful and very talented, extraordinary woman. Her messge is very, very well stated, and as someone said in the post of her death notice in 2003, her message lives on...

Haven't been around for that long here. But I'm very amazed by Jay and all the info he put out here on AZ about old and new players.
Even if this story is really sad, it's nice that even females get some recognition as good poolplayers.

Thats a shame it ended like that for her. As I said in a previous post, she could have made a lot of money speaking on college campuses. She needed a break and never got one.

That's a compelling story a lot of people need to hear.

I remember Lori very well. I always thought of her as the female version of Little David. She had the strongest 9-Ball break of all the women at that time and she played with with strength and an agressiveness like she owned the table. I remember thinking....here's someone who can challenge Jean for sure. But then Lori disappeared and eventually Jean quit so we were cheated out of what could have been many amazing battles between the two.

I ran into her shortly before she died and she was just as sweet as she always was. She was a very humble person who played like a demon --- a very rare combination.

Daydreaming

I was totally fascinated by Lori, and I always thought that there was a little reciprocation also on her part. Unfortunately, she was always flanked by her boyfriend in Detroit, so we could only exchange looks.
I often daydreamed about non-lethal accidents befalling her boyfriend so that I could sweep in and get to hang with her.
She was the best big-money playing woman of all time. She could play for 5k a set or 1k a game 9 ball on the bar table.
I wonder how much her and Neil were playing for, and if a 5 or 10k bet might have produced different results.
I happen to be another one of those who wouldnt know who to bet on between her and Balukas playing for a thousand a game on the bar table. Against any other woman in the world at that time for the big cheese, Lori was stealing.

I'm curious-- what kind of shots were they?

I first met Lori in Lansing in 77 or 78. She was young and attractive. At that time, Lori had some big tall mullet headed boyfriend that was a hindrance to her game (got in the way of everything). I think this was early in her career because at that time, she had a ways to go to compete with Balukus. I think her best years were yet to come (the 80s). I bet on my traveling partner against her while she was getting the 8. I will tell you that this girl was game. She played her heart out. A girl playing pool in the 70s was an anomaly and a curiosity. I dropped out of sight in 1978 until a couple of years ago. JH's post was the first time I have heard here name since. Her story shocks me. What a tragedy.

Curious. Did she play Golf too, if so, how well?

You always did like her Freddy. Thats funny about the "accidents".

Any female could have come to "The Rack" and been able to bet WHATEVER they wanted and I do mean ANY amount. It was known and no female ever did anything big with her. There wan't ANY female at the time that could have played for huge numbers like Lori.

Lori played many times for big money, most people that played decent and were at Oak Park any regular amount of time did.

No golf, not even on a pool table.

She was a good kid that got shit on in life at a young age. It's a too common problem in our world.

Sure some people say pull your big boy or big girl panties up and do something.......but children don't EVER deserve to be shit on.
