Low deflection cue tip

What role does the tip play in reducing deflection? Are some tips better than others? What's the best LD cue tip?

Hollowed elk master matched with hollowed pre flag Master chalk.

I prefer thin tips .

The thinner the tip, the less mass it has, and thus the less deflection the whole cue has.

The best LD tip is the one you like the feel of.

I don't think feel has a lot to do with deflection, but it sure does play a big part in how confident I feel with a particular cue.

In striking the QB, the softer tip will compress, staying on the ball longer.
IMO, this will result in greater squirt/deflection.
Conversely, a harder tip will not compress as much, getting off the ball quicker.
Point being, let the tip move off the ball rather than the tip driving the ball off line.
Problem is, most people can't play a super-hard tip without mis-cueing.

I remember way back about 10 years ago, Predator had some of their deflection test results published online, and their tests all showed less deflection with a harder tip and a smaller radius (dime shape). I've always felt that I got less deflection with those two variables.

Less shaft mass, MORE cue tip deflection, LESS cue ball squirt. I.e. the shaft is more bendy and returns less orthogonal force to the cue ball.

My avatar shows this equation.

Usually the tip diameter matches the shaft diameter.

This is a question for Dr. Dave!!

I can tell you this however: when I was at the US Open sitting on the 1st row, I was surprised at how many of the pro's tips were thin, Immonen and Archer in particular.

Great info but I'm a bit confused about miscue and squirt. It seems that miscue is a form of squirt, maybe to a lesser or greater degree.

Squirt (CB deflection) occurs with every shot, with or without a miscue. A miscue occurs only when the tip slips off the CB ball. This doesn't happen with a normal shot. For more info and demonstrations, see:

This may be a factor of them finding a tip the liked a lot and being afraid to change it out for a dud.

I know I get that feeling every time my tip starts to get low.
