Making your opponents shoot every shot or concede out of respect?

When I'm playing with my bud practicing, we concede an obvious shot.

League or a tournament, not a chance. Some of the tournaments at the hall are played on 9' ers.

The pockets are bad vindictive little things on those and I have seen the softest of shots rattle and stop.

I think we have all seen the easiest shot in the world mess up.

If we're going to go ahead and say why an analogy isn't fully accurate... well that's just silly since it's an analogy, not an equality.

Here's another football analogy that makes a bit more sense for me .... extra point kicks. A professional kicker with his team is way over 90% to make this one-point conversion. No concessions. Every once in a while, the unthinkable happens.

The best ever was a match between Earl and Keith. Race to 11 went hill/hill and took less than an hour.

I think it was the 2nd rack - Keith breaks dry and concedes the game. Bwahaha!!!!:D

The 9 was sitting in a pocket but Earl was going to have to run at least a couple of balls to get to it. Gotta love KM!

Bingo. That, and I hate when someone concedes relative hangers throughout a match, even makes a move to do so in another game, but backs off, making you go ahead and shoot when you think he's about to concede the game/shot. Definite shark move. I prefer to make everyone shoot every shot every time...no misunderstandings.
 
I never concede anymore. I think back to a match that was hill/hill I was playing, I borked an easy out and was sulking in the chair. When he got to the 9 I was contemplating giving it to him but he shot before I could say anything and he rattled the straight in, easy shot.
 
Generally I like to shoot everything and expect them to do the same. If they start with the giving of shots, then I may follow suit. There are alot of people the wnat to shoot the money balls so I let them set the precedent.

People concede putts in golf all the time, Pro level and otherwise.
 
I was told by a player on tour not to give the other guy anything. its called 9 ball for a reason, not " let me give you this" ball. I make everyone shoot it. I played a pro in orlando a few months ago at a tourney, dude put a 6 pack on me from the flip, broke, i ran out, i broke then he put a 7 on me to win the match. i made him shoot every 9 ball. He actually thanked me for that. I was playing a open tourney down in south florida one time, played a good player. He scratched on the 9 and he gave it to me. 2 games later he has ball in hand on the 8, makes them both to win the match. Turned to me and said " I gave you a few games, cant believe you made me shoot those." I was like dude im goin to make you beat me. I dont care if your name is Efren, your shooting those balls. He didnt much like that response. Its more out of respect I make people shoot it. If your gonna beat me, do it. Why should i make it easier for you?

This can be a shark. If your opponent has not had a chance to warm up, don't let him have three hangers to smooth out his stroke.

The real shark with concessions is usually on the fairly easy ball that is not conceded, not on the balls that are conceded.
 
I was in a race to three 9 ball tourney. Hill hill. Made the woman shoot the 9 with ball in hand. She *****ed at me and she *****ed to her husband that she had conceded the nine for me earlier.

Her husband told her to shoot it finally and she rattled it. She wouldn't shake my hand and repeated her points all over again. I replied, "My instructor taught me never to concede balls. Let me know if you want his number."
 
Does this include when you or your opponent makes the 9 or 10 and scratches?

Make the guy beat you. Dont give them anything.

Personally I make everybody shoot everything. Case in point... Warren in the Ginky tourney. Surely most players would've of said nice game after pocketing the 8 ball but looked what happened!!!

Once I was playing a loud mouth hustler from my bar a race to 5 for a 100. I had it hill hill and was running out on him. I got down on the 9 ball straight in the corner (mind you this is a bar table) and I excused myself to go wash my hands. I told my buddy to keep in eye on the table as i snickered knowing I had this guy beat!! A guy that was a loud mouth POS that was getting what was coming to him. I get back to the table and chalk up (players love to swipe your tip when in the john) and got down on the ball.. One... two... CLICK... Just a light tap on the 9 to send it home and it looked good on my end... Not more than two feet from the hole and the ball slid and hit both points and stood on the lip!! My jaw was tight and his lips curdle into the one side of face as hit slammed it in and took the 200 off the light.

I will never forget that game (dont worry I got that guy back many times over ;)) and how easy it is to miss even a hanger. Dont give anybody anything make them beat you. I was also told this by my instructor in my late teens! He said, "You ever see those pros give anybody a ball on espn??" I said no and he replied, "You want to play like a pro right?? Well then act like a pro and make em shoot it and beat ya..." My how things have changed :lol::lol:

Oh almost forgot I was playing in a BCA tour event in 99 (I think) at my home room in Ithaca. Rules where alt break race to 7 double elimination. I was playing this guy pretty good and i get down on the 9 and he says "That's good". I just shrugged my shoulders and grabbed the balls from the bin (One other lesson I never had to learn is let your opponent touch the remaining balls on the table first.. no foul for you) and racked his rack. He broke really well and ran out the rack but when he got on the 9 (easy cut and close) he looks back at me all pissed off and says,"What?? You're not gonna give me this??"

I told him you have to make (there was no rule or penalties on concessions) the nine ball.. His face got as red as a cherry and he slams the 9 ball in the corner and throws the balls hard into the rack for my break.

I didnt say another word to him the rest of the match (4-4 at that point) but he lost due to him not getting his owed RESPECT :rolleyes: I have some respect for you... Make me beat you so you dont cry like a toddler that dropped his ice cream cone. NOBODY OWES ANYBODY D*CK.... That is it. If you want to give games anyway that is your own choice and Im not gonna tell you any differently but dont think for a second that I will give you a freebie!!! Don't be liek this guy in that BCA tourney. You dont get a freebie so what... I didnt ask for it!!

Don't get me wrong I do show sportsmanship when I play tournaments.. I will give somebody the last 9 or 10 ball if I know Im beat. That is ok in my book and shows your a good loser...

Concessions are allowed in golf. In fact, the concession in golf is considered the gentlemanly thing to do. There was a very famous concession of a putt at the 1969 Ryder Cup in which Nicklaus conceded a missable putt to Tony Jacklin which resulted in a 16-16 tie rather than an outright win for the USA. This gesture was considered a great example of sportsmanship.

So golf is not a good example because not only are concessions a part of golf, but they are addressed in the rules (USGA rule 2.4):

2-4. Concession of Match, Hole or Next Stroke

A player may concede a match at any time prior to the start or conclusion
of that match.

A player may concede a hole at any time prior to the start or conclusion of
that hole.

A player may concede his opponent’s next stroke at any time, provided the
opponent’s ball is at rest. The opponent is considered to have holed out with his next stroke, and the ball may be removed by either side.

A concession may not be declined or withdrawn.

Perhaps tennis or darts is a better example.

I can see where concessions can be used to shark during a match, but I don't see it when the match is being conceded. Even in golf concessions have been used for gamesmanship. For example conceding a couple of 4' putts early in a round then making the opponent putt out a 2'-3' putt at a later, critical time.

like many others have stated I've seen way to much "weird shit" to concede a game... it ain't over till the fat lady sings

I agree with every word of this but it only applies to myself and teammates. Opponents can concede anything they want.

Any teammate of mine who gives anything away will never be a teammate again.

There is no Clock in the game of pocket Billiards. So shoot them all.
If you want my $ make all the balls.

P.S I beleive that some events do have a shot clock.
I understand that from a point of view for T.V and commercials But that must be annoying for a player to hear a bell go off with a 10 second warning.
