Man pool players used to be good!

Why is it that everyone you give a sound beating to used to play really good? Back when they were in college, the military, single, had better eyes, a better tip and on and on. They ran rack after rack back then, just ask them. Or don't even ask, they'll tell you all about it anyway. God it must have been magnificent to watch!!

I'm starting to get a complex. Seems like I'm always a day/year/decade too late to catch folks in their prime. How can I ever gauge how my skills are coming along if I'm always playing people on their bad days or when they're so out of practice? It's weird!

oooo you forgot all the people who know someone who is a pro or used to be a pro. "My cousins Boyfriend used to be pro, but he's retired now"

But ya everyone used to be a world beater at one time or another just no one else seems to remember them, I guess that makes me and you guys who beat the former world beaters then..... I feel so honored lol.

Not trying to hijack but I was in the pool hall like 2 years ago and this group of older guys were playing golf pool and one of was just watching and he seen me playing 9 ball against the ghost so he came over and told me he can't stand that golf garbage so he just comes to hang with his friends. He had a leather 3x6 case and he pulled out a real nice older joss and started telling me stories of how he used to play pretty good and hung around detroit when cornbread was beating everyone. He was probably late 60's and after like 25 mins he started stringing racks and hit me with a three in like 6-8 minutes, he didn't miss too many balls after that I still play with him when I see him there. Even at his age hes probably a low to mid A player, it was pretty kool.

Everyone forgets how bad they were, it's part of the ego. We have a guy here that claims that at one time he could beat anyone in the world. it's absurd

Anyone

that played 'that good' when they were younger will never shoot 'bad' when they are older. Shooting good Pool is made up of building blocks, and even if you haven't played in a while, those building blocks are still there. Yeah, they may miss a shot or two from being out of practice, but you can usually tell how good they might have been just by the way they approach the game.

if U were once good THEN you still are good!!

It doesn't matter if you were good in the old days or before u were born if you still can play you will still have the knowledge which made u a good player in the first place. This includes foremost shot selection.

If a guy has lost his eyesight from cataracts OK i am willing to give a concession if he cannot pot

But if a guy has ALSO forgotten how to approach the game and how to control the white then they were never any good at any stage in their life unless they have developed alzheimer's disease. I was also good once at being 7 foot tall but now I am only 5-10

I agree. I learned almost all of my pool knowledge from watching & playing an old gentleman that was well past his prime but I stole all that I could from him because he knew it all, even if he could no longer execute all of it perfectly all of the time. It's easy to recognize old Creme from BS even though they both may stink.

Music to my ears in a bar with a pool table was, "I put myself though college from pool winnings". Johnnyt

I've heard this song and dance from guys way younger than I am.

I'm wondering why it bothers you so much.
.

It doesn't bother me at all. Was just making a funny about this recurring dog and pony show.

But now that you mention it, can you recommend a good psychologist?:frown:

Yeah I love that line...When I was a freshman in college there were a few guys that played B level or better. But they were all seniors when they left there was 2 guys who could play, me and another kid. We would gamble for hours on end sometimes and break even. No one else even knew how to hold a stick.

My pool game helped me get drunk winning free Beers from time to time but thats about it. If there was a way to make money in the student Union pool room I would have figured that out. Bottom line there was'nt

I did have a professor that told me he went to Brown University in Providence RI in the 60s and beat the Rich kids out of money and cars playing pool. But eventually got kicked out of the School for the same reasons.

Probably because it's true. Pool requires a lot of dedication and time invested. For most guys they may do it for a while if they have the opportunity and it is fun to see how good you can get with the effort. Truth is though, after a while it is a waste of time and they return to being more casual players not taking it so seriously anymore. Still, it is hard to forget how good you once played, especially when you lose to someone you can tell is not really a very good player and you would have robbed them with ease at one time.

In general, anyone who says they used to be a good player, are banger level players. Especially the comment JohnnyT said about "I put myself through college". Only a banger says that.

If someone says they stink, those are the guys you have to watch out for.

Then there are the guys like me, who legitamitely stink, and are comfortable admitting it:)

Have a great Psychologist here in Louisiana. Matter of fact he use to play jam-up pool when he was younger.

I've heard the line about how good their dad is or friend or uncle after they see me run a rack and I always say, "call them right now and tell them I'll play them for $100 a set" in a serious tone.

I haven't read every post here but...

I once saw this somewhere on AZ but I forget where:

"The older you get, the better you were". Or something like that!

I think it's, "The older I get, the better I used to be".
Or as Danny DiLiberto put it about Johnny Irish, "The longer he's dead the better he plays".

I guess that could be one scenario.

Perhaps one in a thousand times the story gets told.
