I've always wanted to go to the Philippines, and this is a very tempting opportunity.

The Philippines are the best place for training to reach your full potential. Even the short stops over there are tough to beat.

Thanks to Manny Pacqiao for stepping up and "challenging the world" (not just "invited players") to compete to see who really is THE BEST IN THE WORLD.

Below is the post Manny made 3 hours or so ago on FaceBook. Maybe I'll get the private jet and take Corey, I told him he should "stick" to snooker. LMAO!!!

I'll take a thousand to one, bet a thousand, and I have a chance to win a million.

Yes, indeed, what do you think the odds of me winning this one? 0% LoL

I'll take a thousand to one, bet a thousand, and I have a chance to win a million. Who knows, I may have a major flashback.....and the worse thing would be an awesome trip to Manila - pool players are treated like "rock stars" there, here there just treated like "rocks". :yeah:

Either way Manny is ROCKING the pool world like no one else right now!!!

Exciting news!! Great for the pros and fans.

glad to see him putting on another tournament.....oh yea....really looking forward to another 30 threads and 5,000 posts complaining about calling the 10 ball.

Is Manny having the event in Manila or General Santos? A grand to fly to Manila and a couple hundred more to get to Mindanao plus expenses. Sounds like fun.

Expensive fun if you're a thousand to one dog.:)

Expense is always relative to risk, and also reward.

I would be going to play Efren or Bustemante on their "home courts".

Go for it CJ!

If you have never been to the PI, you will love it. They LOVE pool over there. I lived there for 3 years and found more pool than anywhere.

Hello there,If you don't mind..did you ever see much bank pool played over there? John B.

John,

I never saw any bank pool when I played there, but that was back in 1979-82. The only games I ever saw played were "rotation" games of some sort.

I would imagine they play a bit of everything now...especially if you have a peso or two. I think you may be able to rob quite a few of them at banks.

Aloha.

The "short stops" in the Philippines play about the 7 ball better than they do here.

Yes, it's the ultimate training atmosphere for pool - many of the champions have been there to tune up their games at one time or another.

One of them told me a story of going in one of their little "dive" pool rooms. It had no modern conveniences like air conditioning, carpet, or inside facilities. The "house man" was an old guy that was missing several fingers. They called him up to play this pro level player and beat him, running out {nearly} every time.

I laughed out loud when I read your comment about "conveniences" in the pool rooms. Is an "end rail" a convenience?

I went in one place and they were playing pool on a table with one of the end rails missing. I can't remember what the rules were if the balls went flying off into the floor, but they were betting and trying to play on the end that had a rail.

When people see pictures of these "dive" pool room tables, they can't SEE what the conditions are REALLY like because sometimes the table looks "normal". People don't know that some of these table are "home made" by a carpenter of some sort and put together like their "jeepney" vehicles that have been running since WW II. They use everything from bubblegum to water buffalo glue to hold them together. Lots of the tables have cloth that reminded me of horse blankets and a lot of the tables had CONCRETE beds. I don't know what the rails were made of...they may have used old tires as rubber for all I know.

All I know is they like to play and will bet, no matter what the playing conditions.

In edit: If they can "rig" one of these jeepneys to keep on working ever since MacArthur left, you know they can "rig" a pool table to keep it "working". It may not "work" in the sense we know it, but it suits them when it is all they have.

I think in Jay's Phillipines thread he has told several stories about playing guys bank pool, but from reading his stories I think it's not a regular game they play.

That's correct. Banks is not a well known game over there. The only guys who can really play the game are the Filipinos who have come over here and learned the game, like Efren, Francisco and Dennis. That said, I think the best players over there could be talked into playing Banks with John and he would be the big favorite. The Filipino players are always ready to learn a new game, especially if you tell them you will bet at it.

I wonder if it will conflict with the USBTC in Reno in February. That might impact at least a few players who might have thought about doing both.

Manny used to come into Hollywood Billiards here in LA. He would play guys like Max Eberle and he could play some. It is great to see a guy with a lot of cash love pool so much.

They adjust because it's their ticket out of poverty, to come to the USA

They also don't play "one foul" rotation. They have rules that have the spot shot as a major component, instead of "ball in hand" - that's another reason they are so good, they play a demanding game, one that requires strategy and shot-making, not "ducking, kicking and ball in hand" -

They adjust because it's their ticket out of poverty, to come to the USA and prove themselves like Parica, Efren, Bustemante, Luat, Andam, Alex P. and many more through the years. It's like heaven to them in the USA, they would play on carpet if they had to......and would still run out and win tournaments.

Manny Pacqiao event

This event is scheduled for Feb 15-25.
Final sign-ups are Jan 15th.

(This is from a post I saw.)

The Jay Swanson Memorial is Feb 7-8 in Los Angeles.
The Chuck Markulis Memorial is Feb 14-15 in Sacramento
The US Bar Table is Feb 16-22 in Reno.

I would expect several of the TOP players to be absent this year. This is unfortunate for all the players and the events. Our dates have been set for months. I wish there was a little courtesy extended to the players.

There are so few quality events and it is a shame to have them overlap! But this is an opportunity for many of the 'better' players to get a good payday!!!
