Matchroom looking for players for the U.S. Open

Not all true , Ronnie O in particular has big issues how snooker is run, there has been plenty of info regarding him and Barry

The quote is from their pool website and has nothing to do with snooker. I'd argue that Matchroom's contention that their events are ones the players badly want to play in is absolutely accurate.

My last on this, i contacted MR about field size. They said they were doing a 256 man field from the get go. They have no idea where the 128 rumors came from. My guess it was a holdover from the older Opens. The stream so far has been great. A buddy is there and he says its awesome. Non-stop play. As soon as a match ends another starts. Said its running really well so far.

I noticed, too, that they are moving ahead swiftly. If they adhere to their schedule for today, 230 matches will have been played by end of day, an impressive number. As noted on the forum previously, it takes 488 matches to complete the qualifying rounds.

Now that first round is complete, I counted 4 forfeits:

Mohamed Baabad

Corey Harper

Terry Spalding

Jamie White

If there were more that were replaced by stand-by, I don't know. I'd say in either case, 4 forfeits in a field of 256 is damn good for a pool event.

Very confusing here. At almost every event I've ever attended, the draw was done after the players meeting. Even players that have committed to an event shouldn't be drawn into matches until they show up to the event.

Growing pains here. I hope they get this mess sorted out.

I'll agree to disagree on this one:) It is such a large and prestegious event, they should do the draw a week in advance, as they did. Not leave it for 20 minutes before the start, like every other pool tournament.

http://www.matchroompool.com/wp-content/uploads/Billiards-Digest-Sept-2018-MRP.pdf In this article last Sept. EF states that would be a 256 man field. Panozzo wrote the article.

HA! Amazing. The guy's own magazine had a centerfold spread with 256 players from over 6 months ago! And now he writes a blog post calling foul!

Maybe he did it on purpose? I bet the hits on his blog/FB post claming MR screwed up are the most hits he's had in a while. Click bait, same as every other "news" article in the world.

Man you guys are all nuts if you think MR screwed up having a few forfeits, IMO:) Pool tournaments is nothing more than herding cats. I hope the forfeited players paid in full, and don't get their cash back.

PS, I don't think I've EVER seen a field that did not have forfeits. Even when Pat took over the US Open, the field was FULL, but still a couple of forfeits were on the draw.

Zuglan's ALSO has forfeits. Players pay in full, but come tournament day, he has some fill-ins that are the local crew.

Again, 4 forfeits in a 256 player field is a NON-issue.

This would mean they had a field of 252 players actually show up to play. One or two forfeits would be normal for a field this size. Four is a little on the high side, but acceptable.

Point well taken. There are clearly advantages to an early draw. As I said, though, I haven't seen it done this way at any American event I've attended.

Still, if I agree with you, then you'll agree that the payment deadline must be a week in advance with anyone unpaid at that point replaced by someone on the wait list. The greater problem here was the inclusion of entrants who had yet to pay the entry fee in the draw.

In the behrman events that had entrant lists publicized pre-event, past winners were included too and many didn't play.

I agree with this.

My first reaction after reading a few posts in this thread, was that some players were on the bracket that had NOT paid in full. That made me a bit irritated, and mad that MR would trust a pool player to show up without paying in full.

But, one poster who claimed he had the player's names to that affect, later edited his posts, and now there are no names.

So all we have are accusations, and they are not even from the players themselves.

At this point, I'd say it's a fair bet that every player on the draw was in fact paid in full, and for whatever reasons, 4 were no shows. Knowing pool players, that seems the most plausible explanation to me.

What’s the phrase? Looks like we butchered a pig, but no one wanted bacon.

Round one is in the books. Pool and Vegas are both engaged. Looks like the Open is in motion and functioning perfectly. I couldn’t be more excited about professional pool in the US!

Makes me want to ignore my responsibilities and jump a flight to Vegas for the week. Hope MR makes it thru the week with no problems.

Agreed. Great job all around. Looking forward to Day 2.

Did any of the 4 show up for their second round matches? Will we have to wait till tomorrow to find out?

???

Copied straight from the Matchroompool.com website:

Matchroom are the world leaders in hosting, promoting and broadcasting nine-ball pool. With a portfolio of major events headed by the transatlantic tussle which is the Mosconi Cup, Matchroom have been staging the tournaments the world’s best players all want to play in since 1993.

If they refer to themselves as Matchroom, why shouldn't we?

You missed the intentional sarcasm, sjm. It was directed at me, not you. :)
