Matlock.................

I've got a few years on Dave and I was never in his league. We never played, but have been friends for close to fifty years. Every time I ever saw him playing anyone on a bar table I bet on Dave, and I don't think I ever lost. I advised Keith to leave him alone and he did not play Matlock while I was in with him. He was on his own there. Buddy was the only other guy I would put in this league with David and Keith. Maybe Wade Crane too.

There was a Mexican guy that came up here in the late 1970's and early 80's and beat on just about everybody on the bar tables. They called him Cannela (not the Cannela who still plays now, out of Vegas I think), and I never saw him play, just heard stories about him. He spent time up here at least twice and I never heard of anyone beating him. The he went back to Mexico and got hooked on the big H and that was the end of his pool career.
My friend, Vernon Elliott, told me about Cannela. He said Cannela was the best 9 ball player he ever played. Vernon could play with all those former champs you named. I know for sure he beat two of the three you named because THEY told me he did!

Was that Canella/Canelo guy kinda light/red-headed? He stayed a while with Fat Randy back in early 80's. That dude could flat play. Funny side bar: Randy laid him 12-4 eating coneys(chili dogs) for 50bux. Randy was finishing off #12 and the Mexican was on his third. Didn't want to try to out-eat Randy. ;)

I recall that was his description.

Matlock was long a name that put fear on the faces of bar table players. Take a good look, the man was solid as a rock at the table. Dave was a world class player who also played great on 9' tables. He was not just the bar box King. He was also a strong Three Cushion player and could run a century on the snooker table.

One other guy you could put in the league of the three you named Jay, was Vernon Elliott. Both Buddy and Keith can verify his inclusion. Probably Mr. Matlock too because he had to know Vernon. Vernon told me several stories about the Canelo player you mentioned. Vernon said he was a great player so I knew he had to be better than a great player....because Vernon was stingy with his compliments.

Sure would be great to hear more Vernon Elliot stories, if you’e able & willing. Only heard 1-2 from CJ’s vids. Pretty much invisible on the Internet. Maybe its own thread, so we don’t derail this one on Matlock? Thx ✌️

Dave Matlock and then fiancé who was a news reporter in Dave's hometown. She flew in to Vegas to watch Dave in the semifinals.

Dave competed in this event via winning a qualifier, and he really had a fantastic tournament, pocketing $30,000.

Dave purchased the Gorina cloth before departing Vegas.

Watchin' my buddy Dave up at Jesse Bowman's big bar-box blowout. Dave still has serious game at 67. He finished 7-8th in 8b and is in the 10b now. Go gettem' bar king!!
Love me some Dave Matlock. Drove across the country with him and he filled my head with systems. I watched him put them into action over a weekend and he clearly has mastered them all.

I'd enjoy watching a handicapp match.
Tyler against Matlock with the Big 2 1/2'' Heavy cue ball, Matlock gets 3 on the wire going to 11 on a Valley.
Best 3 outta five sets.
I'd watch that and bet.
Tyler and that predator ld shaft would get crumpled by Matlock and his giant ball 😂.

In my mind the current shaft tech would be a exercise in depravity with the big rock. Odd power curve the Ball would hesitate and not get DROVE but would drive you lol.

The conditions ID suggests would give Matlock a chance to shine. Best I recall the big cue ball was more like 2-3/8" but it still works better with a follow based game than a draw based game. If Tyler takes things seriously and puts in some time with the mud ball I can't call it. If Tyler takes the mud ball lightly, I think Dave will take him to school!

I have thought that a skinny carbon fiber shaft might work well on a snooker table, never considered what it would be like hitting the mud ball. Might vibrate like a tuning fork!

Exactly my thoughts…out the blue just matching up on the spot. And if one takes away that jump cue it’s probably gonna be like a nightmare lol

I think there was a Vernon Elliot thread maybe 5 or 6 years back. I’ll second your interest as he was from the Louisville area as am I. Always fun to hear of the local talent. I’ll try to dig up the thread.
