Mike Davis Nickname

Someone should email Chris Berman, he (or his writers...) could check out the ESPN tapes and come up with a good one...

My favorite Berman nicknames:

George "taco" Bell (Toronto BlueJays)
Bert "be home" Blyleven (Minnesota twins)

Shame Mike doesn't play like Basavich. Then he could be Mike "forever and a" Davis.

How about Mike "Ground Hog" Davis?

A bit off-topic, but do nicknames do our game any good? To many they seem quite juvenile. Most of them conjure up negative images (The Black Widow, the Duchess of Doom, The Terminator). Some are OK, like Pagulayan being called The Killer Pixie.

Davis has a game that is much too powerful to need some redneck monikor. I have an idea. Let's be original and call him 'Mike'.

I thought it was Alex 'The Lion' Pagulayan

I always liked:

Eric "Sleeping with" Bienemy.

ROFL.

From what I've seen and the replies that keep coming - It looks like the winner is "The Doctor" "M.D." "Is there a doctor in the house" has become a favorite.
I'll use it at the next tournament - to see if it catches on!

If you are going to use the MD theme, you could make it a cool euphemism for doctor, like 'sawbones' or 'bloodletter'.

Cheers,
Regas

You could just call him "Big Slick". Obviously he is fairly big and slick is a polite way to describe that hair. I originally thought of "oil slick" but I figured it to be a bit uh crude.

You've probably earned several after that post!

Why would Killer Pixie be any better than The Terminator?

I gotta believe somone hijacked Jerry's name here.

Killer Pixie??????????

Well, from what has been written here "quiet and polite" "a grinder" "innocent looking" "gentleman" "unusual stroke" "can jump over anything". I would think the perfect nickname would be "Clark Kent".

Just when you think you are playing someone that you can beat with an unusual looking stroke he turns into Superman.

Wayne

I can't believe I didn't think of this one earlier, but here it is. Mike's initials "M.D." also represent the abbreviation for Maryland. Since Mike lives in Maryland, how about "Maryland Mike"? :)

Howdy,
Around 12 years ago Ewa Mattaya Lawrence ,in her article in Billiards Digest or pool and Billiards magazine, commented about some of the nick names. She said the pool players sound like they are gangsters( machine gun Butera,Pretty boy Floyd,Riffleman etc.)She questioned about the image that these names project.
Some times these players think that their nick names are like the registered Trademarks and they display infantile behavior when an another player has the same nick name.We have too many nick names already...

I consider Mike to be a pretty good friend, PHall friend anyway! When I last played him, we were pretty close in score and he told me that I would have to let him win beacuse I had a job and he did not, so I let him win, or maybe he owned me from there. Im not telling  .
So that is the story as to why I would give the following nickname to Mike Davis, "Full-Time". JoeT offered something close to this up already, "Iron Mike", as a result of the commitment displayed by Mike, I like FT better tho!

Picture

Well, after looking at his picture on AZBilliards players section, how about:

"Dorky" Mike Davis

..Sorry about that, couldn't resist.

Jerry,

Nicknames are not nearly as juvenile as the sublimely silly Sid Waddell. :D

I think this one should be the winner. "Big Slick" because hell! The guy is big. And slick because, well, let's face it, rain drops could glide off that hairdo!

How about Mike "The Spike",Davis. He either drives a stake through his opponent's heart or he is jumping over all impeding obstacles.

 Okay guys - when I was announcing the matches this past weekend, I had to announce Niels "The Terminator" Feijen playing Mike Davis both were followed with their recent wins, etc, but it just didn't sound as cool or riviting.
We need to give him a nickname. In one of the magazines last year the called him Mike "The Grinder" Davis - but he doesn't like it, and it didn't stick very well. A few people mentioned it when he was at the tournament table, and we all drew a blank.

Let's here some suggestions. He's 6' 5". He's quiet and polite (most of the time). He's great at jump shots. JAM - you may be better at this since you've seen his style of playing more often then most. I'm always tucked away in a corner and don't have the opportunity to watch.

Y'all are creative - let's hear it.
