I remember reading an article about him in some pool mag a while back, said he just drives around the country going from tournament to tournament. According to AZ, he made $41K LY and $36K in 2007 from tournament winnings.

Seems like I don't hear his name come up in action matches much. Does he consider himself a road player, matching up at these tournaments, or is he really working his ass off, driving all over the place, to only make $80K in the last two years??? Does he have another source of income (ie job?).

BTW, although I completely respect his ability and accomplishments, it still amazes me he runs racks with the stroke he uses! I tried doing the drop the elbow and push whole arm through style he has, and I can't make a ball!

You think his stroke is crazy, check out Scott Frost's stroke. Talk about unorthodox. But man can they play.

Your posts is exactly why I am in no hurry to become a pro. All though I try very hard to do it, I am going to make my money from a career job.

...and you have to remember, that $80K, for TWO YEARS hard work, is gross wages, and doesn't cover expenses, taxes, etc. I doubt Mike broke even, let alone made money. He is a top player, nonetheless, and still is winning tournaments. I agree with you about his stroke...I couldn't play that way either...but it sure works well for him! :D

Very good example of the difficulty of trying to survive playing pool.
Remember that is just according to AZBilliards. Not all tournaments are reported here and expecially not all winnings. While I suspect the numbers are pretty close they are not totally accurate.

He does make money. There are some of the winnings that are not posted, plus matching up and leasons. He made more money than AZ has on record. Dont get me wrong it is very tough too. And he has to pay for all his travel and entry fees. But, he is doing what he loves and has total freedom. (I'm so jealous) He does not have any other job other than pool. But, he has his own line of gloves out now, and does a little bit with stocks too.

But he is still playing in tourny's. He is going to the Seminole tournament this weekend. And hopefully he will bringin home the bacon!!(Yum, crispy bacon)

I tried to get him into an action match one time against Lil Keith...it never worked out but I sure tried to get it go off, he was my last hope to beat him ;-( J/K Mike D wouldnt stop playing 1P with Walt, go figure. Anyway he did share a little story with me about him winning the Reno Open, then his car got messed up so he basically had to take the money from winning the Reno Open and buy a new vehicle. He didn't seem bitter about it, but he did tell me it's not so easy being a pro pool player. I suspect he has some cash though somewhere so I wouldn't worry too much about him, plus he's a straight edge pool player so no pills or drugs to contend with. He's one of the best outta the great state of NC, come on he played in the Mosconi Cup...his ass aint broke lol.

I had the pleasure of playing Mike in a pro-am once and the experience was awesome. The outcome was obvious, but he displayed a quiet charm that made me a fan...I'll always root for him. He took a few minutes to chit-chat about my shot selection after the match and that free lesson has been tucked away in my memory banks for future use.

Sure, I was an easy opponent and he could afford to be a bit more relaxed, but I think his real character was exposed during that match. I wish him all the best as he travels the bumpy tournament road.

The Hardest Working Man in Pool

Up in NYC we call him the hardest working man in pool. You would read on the internet he just snapped off a tourney in korea and the next weekend you draw him in the first round of a blaze. :yikes:

The guy somehow just appears at tournaments. The funny thing is it could just be the most random tournament in the middle of nowhere and poof - oh look Mike Davis just walked in and nobody is ever really too happy about it.

Mike Davis is a nice person. He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and he's always been hard worker. I would hate to read forum trash about him because he certainly doesn't deserve that. He is respected among his peers and fans alike.

He's a very thrifty player and knows how to travel the tournament trail. He does what he has to do to get himself to the tournament, and when he gets there, he gives it his all.

I got a kazillion Mike Davis pics, but here's one of my faves taken at Turning Stone Casino. Mike stayed at a hotel down the street that was not as expensive as the rooms at the casino, and he got himself to the tournament matches on time every single day. He's always been very polite to all those who cross his path, including me.

Here's Mike, Genie Man, and an unnamed player, taken at Turning Stone Casino in 2006 or thereabouts. I always get a kick out of seeing Mike's dimples.

I hear he's living in the Carolinas. I hope he's happy!
