Mike Sigel v. Louie Roberts Video

I was in my local video store the other day, and saw they were having a sale on some old VHS tapes they were trying to get rid of. Much to my delight they had quite a few pool tapes. Most of them were without note (trickshots, beginner instructionals, a tape on how to hustle by Jimmy Mataya etc) however one caught my eye so I bought it. The box said it was a 100 point straight pool challenge match between Mike Sigel and Larry Liscotti circa 1988 or so. However, when I brought it home and watched it I found out the tape was really a 9 ball match circa 1988 held in Aspen, CO between Sigel and Louie Roberts. There is also another shorter match between Sigel and Rempe. Kim Davenport, Larry Liscotti, Jimmy Mataya and someone I didn't know were doing the commentary. I was disappointed it wasn't straight pool, but it's altogether pretty cool. Can anyone shed some light on what tournament this might have been? I think the table had a logo on the side that said WCBA or something. They were also playing some strange 9-ball rules whereby if there was a scratch on the break any balls made were spotted along with the lowest numbered ball on the table and the cueball taken behind the headstring.

That's the ole' 2 shot pushout rules 9-ball, the purest form of 9-ball

That's not 2-shot shoot-out.

Those were just the standard 1 foul ball in hand rule pre Texas-Express (now called Pro-Express).

All balls spotted, cue ball in the kitchen on a break foul. If the one was in the kitchen on a break foul, it was spotted.

I would love to see that match between Louie Roberts and Sigel!!!

I'd like to 2nd this request and if you happen to know the production company of the match...accu-stats or whomever...would you be so kind as to provide that info. as I would love to purchase a personal copy of this match.

For some reason I doubt it's Accu-stats though, because as far as I was aware the only match Pat and them had was of Louie playing Archer...although I could be (and I hope) I'm wrong here!

It was a invitational with some of the top names of the day, made around 1986 or 1987. The video group Key Media put together several tapes of their "tournament," held in Aspen, CO. The tournaments included 8-ball, 9-ball, and a shootout ring game tournament (the winner of each ring game moved on to a final ring game, won by Jimmy Reid). If you've ever seen the silly video "Learn from the Best," that was part of it. Other than Hopkins, Strickland, Balukas and Mizerak, the rest of the players were a Who's Who of top players. Varner, Sigel, Mataya, Reid, Fusco, Lisciotti, Medina, Davenport, Wade Crane, Louis Roberts, etc. as well as Robin Bell, Belinda, Ewa, and LJJ.

Not silly at all. Up until the 1988 Brunswick World 9-ball Open, these were commonly used rules for 9-ball. Express Rules weren't fully transitioned for TV yet. They also tried spotting balls, and giving full-table ball-in-hand, but that gave up too many 1-9 combinations.

All good info here. Key Media was Blair Key's company. He used to advertise frequently on ESPN with an 800 number to buy his tapes. Did quite well as I recall.

Hey Cornerman (or anyone else that would happen to know),

Are the rights to these videos in public domain, or is there a company still in operation that would sell copies of these matches?

These would be great matches to have from a historical and entertainment value perspective.

I've got the dvd, unfortunately Louie wasn't hitting them so good that day. It also has a straight pool match with Liscotti vs Sigel and a ring 9 ball game with Sigel, Davenport, Wade Crane and Jimmy Fusco.

You're right he wasn't hitting them very well in that particular match. I would like to have seen the straight pool, eightball and ring game but those tapes might be lost to history (at least hard to procure). To all the previous posters thanks for the info. I didn't know when the full express rules became prevelent. Very insightful.

I would like to, but I don't have anything to record it with. My digital cameras on the fritz, and it doesn't have enough memory to start with.

I too purchased this video some time ago thinking it was straight pool. I do have it somewhere. If you are interested, PM me and I'll hunt it down for you. I'm pretty sure I'll find it. Figure 20 bucks and I'll pay the shipping in the USA.

definitely someone has gotta get this thing on digital something-or-other so it can be preserved... there aren't many of those tapes left and the ones that are around are quietly deteriorating.

I watched the tape that was supposed to be in that box (lisciotti vs sigel) and it was pretty entertaining, but too short to take very seriously. There's a little trash talk and even the announcers get into it. There's a really funny brutal slam made by one of them on Mr. Sigel's extra-flowery vest... something like "A member of the audience has just informed me... Mr. Sigel's Vest came from 'Larry's Carpet World'."

louie roberts

I would like a copy of louie as well.
