I cannot understand, for the life of me, why anyone would take offense to Santa Claus. He is one of MANY representations of the Christmas spirit. The representation of Santa Claus -- to MOST people, no matter what race, creed, color, nationality, or religion -- is merry, jolly, and happy.
Is it being insensitive to say the words "Merry Christmas," as one example, on this pool-related forum? I think not. If I was Muslim, I would think the words were an expression of good wishes. It is sad to think that on this forum which represents cultures from around the world, united together by their passion for pool, that words of merriment and mentions of Santa cause rage.
I am beginning to think that folks above the Mason-Dixon line are just different from the folks below the Mason-Dixon line. I have lived through the Vietnam War, the Martin Luther King riots of '68 in Washington, D.C., and have seen a whole lot of hatred in my life. I never felt it in the pool room, ever. Somehow the diversity of folk from all walks of life made pool interesting to me. Young or old, fat or thin, tall or short, it makes no difference if you desire to become proficient at pool.
Seasons Greetings, my fellow AzB-ers, and may the New Year bring you peace of mind, good health, and much happiness.

Doesn't offend me one iota. I think it is ridiculous that the mere mention of Santa Claus is offensive to some, even though there is no Santa Claus.

jam, it's hard to say if santa does not really exist for as most of us know, believing can make it so. although this much i do know for sure there was a saint nicolaus and he was credited to filling at least one stocking by the fireplace with gold. i posted this link in non-pool and nobody seemed to care but i still think it is interesting.JAM said:I'm with you. Is Santa Christian?
Anyone who travels knows that Christmas is celebrated all over the world. It's become a secular holiday. Having just returned from China, where there are few Christians (it's mostly Buddhist and Taoist) Christmas is widely celebrated. Trees, decorations, Santa, the whole bit.
Christians celebrate Christmas as the birth of Christ, but Christmas is a cultural phenomenon and is by far the most widely celebrated holiday in the world.
Let's not forget, the religion many of us practice, Jews, Christians, and Islam all originated from the same events. Whether you call it Arbrahamism or Judeo-Christian beliefs, it was at one time the same religion.
Leaving religion out of it, Jews are an ethnic group. They have been discriminated against and maybe they're sensitive about it. Maybe it's time for all of us to consider that and recognize that it's time to stop. That's not much to ask, is it?

Many folks have fond memories during the holiday season, with family get-togethers, good food and cheer, and, after all, 'tis the season to be jolly, isn't it?![]()
Check out this 3-minute slide show by renown photographer, Danny Goldfield from -- [I hasten to say it after my previous posts] -- up North, New York City, the Big Apple, Yankee Country.
Goldfield's goal is to photograph one child from every country in the world that lives in New York City. Look into the eyes of these children. The holiday season, whether it is Christmas, Kwanzaa, or Hannukah, is a very special time of year. How refreshing it is to see the innocence of a child who has not yet acquired any prejudice, anger, and hatred: http://www.nychildren.org/
