MATCHROOM SPORT can announce the first three players to make up the five man European side to compete in December's PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Following the conclusion of the Dutch Open at the weekend, Germany's Ralf Souquet retained his position as European No.1 and thus becomes the first name on the team sheet.

It will be the German globe-trotter's record equalling 13th appearance in the competition, and he has helped create an undefeated European run of three Mosconi Cups.

"I am very happy and glad to be chosen again to play for Team Europe in the Mosconi Cup. It will be, apart from the World Games in Kaohsiung, the highlight of the year for me and it's an honour to represent Europe for the 13th time since it started back in 1994," said a delighted Souquet.

"I have only missed three events - 1995, 2004 and 2005 - and it will be once again a tough battle with Team USA and we are ready for it."

Presently ranked No.2 in Europe is Dutch power house Niels Feijen, who will be stepping up to the plate for his sixth outing in a European shirt.

The 32 year-old from The Hague made his debut in the event in the humiliating 12-1 defeat in 2001 but has made amends in recent years with a brace of Cup-winning performances.

"I'm over the moon to be playing in the Mosconi Cup again. I've had a solid season and made nine major finals of which I've won two," said Feijen.

"It's a bit of a surprise but a deserved one and this will be my third Mosconi Cup in a row and sixth overall. This is super news and has really made my day!" he added.

Considered by many to be hugely unlucky not to have got the nod last year, England's Darren Appleton finally gets his chance following a superb 12 months that has seen him take the World 10 Ball title, win the World Pool Masters and rise to the dizzy heights of No.1 on the WPA World Rankings.

"I sort of expected it but after last year's disappointment, I didn't want to get my hopes up. I think winning the World Pool Masters was massive for me this year and I'm chuffed to bits to be playing in the Mosconi Cup," said a clearly delighted Appleton.

"It's the biggest event of the year and one I've watched every year on TV since 1994. I'm really excited to be playing in it and it's a great honour to play alongside the likes of Niels and Ralf."

The 2009 PartyPoker.net Mosconi Cup takes place from Thursday to Sunday 10-13 December at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

Live in its entirety on Sky Sports in the UK, the event features two five-man teams representing Europe and the USA doing battle in a series of singles and doubles matches. Now in its 16th year, the Americans hold a 10-5 lead with one tied match in 2006.

The remaining two European players will be named in October, while the members of the Team America will be named over the coming weeks and then at the conclusion of the US Open at the end of October as well as a public vote.

Tickets for the Mosconi Cup are available from: http://www.ticketmaster.com/2009-Mosconi-Cup-tickets/artist/1334375
or 1-800 745 300 or from the MGM Grand on 1-800 929 1111 or 702 891 7777.

I hate to say it, but it's doubtful the Americans can put together a team this strong. I think it's time for new blood on the American team. Keep a strong veteran like Johnny and Shane of course. Then chose between Schmitty, Hillbilly, Corey, Rodney, Oscar, Gabe and Jeremy. Personally I like Gabe and Jeremy together. Their chemistry is good and that's good for the team. Then I'd take Schmitty or Hillbilly. That's a close call. I really like Charley's enthusiasm! He'd get the whole team fired up. Any way you look at it the Americans are big underdogs again this year.

That is one monster team Roy! Hard to match them man for man. Go USA!:)

Shannon Daulton should even things out. He was hitting balls better than anyone in the country in the match against Reyes. He's Definitely my first choice, then Dennis hatch, J. Smidt, Cliff Joyner.

I like Shannon and Dennis also. Like I said we need some new blood. Okay, Dennis, Shannon, Hillbilly, Shane and Johnny. You know what, there is a team that could win! A lot of firepower, tons of heart and all still hungry to win. I like the chemistry. HMMMMM

Hey Jay been awhile! That is a great team true American talent with alot of heart! But Jay sense i dont chime in much can I pick the Captain?............................ Okay Thanks Jay! My pick will be Keith FCKN McCready!!!!!!!!!!!! How sweet would that be? Just my 2 Cents I think that would be great for American Pool. The hell with this Cleancut ESPN shit lets get some Backyard Grinders on the Big Set! Even if it was just as a Coach! Ooh yeah the EUROS got no chance if they had to actually bet something! I went to the Mosconi Cup in Vegas in 03 and getting a 20 dollar sweat bet from there Railbirds was like trying to get it to SNOW IN LONG BEACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to see a line up like this go up against the European team.

Johnny Archer
Shane Van Boening
Rodney Morris
Jeremy Jones
Corey Deuel

I think they all match up well with the Europeans. It's a toss up as to who would be the stronger team.

Your Funny Jef! Captain Keith does have a ring to it. It would be a bonanza on TV too. Maybe the most watched pool show of all time. I can just see it now, Shane pulls a squeaker out against Hohmann and Keith looks at The Hatchetman and says, "Get your ass in there and bring home the bacon."

Or maybe Shannon is playing a tight match with Souquet and Keith pulls him aside between games, wraps his arm around his neck and mutters in his ear, "Don't worry kid, this guy will dog it for the cheese." When the Hillbilly is set to go against Mika, Keith exhorts him, "Don't let that sissy beat you!"
I can just see him trying to talk to Shane when his back is turned. He'd be waving his arms and jumping up and down to get his attention. Good pick Jef!

Johnny
Shane
Dennis
Charlie W
Tell Mika he will be No. 1 player (since he didn't even get selected top 3 in euro)
or
Corey

This is the only chance the USA will have and even then, you don't stand much of one.

Dude did you just put Charlie Williams in over Schmidt ?

Wow.

Euro fan much?

Someone no one has mentioned who is a straight gangster is my man Stevie Moore. Amazing talent and everybody loves the guy.

It sounded like Nick Varner is going to be the captain for the American team. Nick was talking about it when he was doing the streams for Galveston. Also Marcus Chamat might be on the Europen team. He has been winning tournaments this year.

The Johnny on my list is Archer not Johnny Deeper...

and yes I picked Williams over Schmidt. Williams seems to play really good against the big boys and is really steady. It was a coin flip between Corey and S. Moore. I think Moore would be another steady player for the U.S. team

Did you edit your post and remove Archer??? I thought it said Schmidt and Archer

Van Boening
Archer
Deuel
Schmidt

That would be my pick for team USA.

I don't believe in European supremacy over US players...I think they're equal in ability.

I didnt see Johnny's name listed at first so I went back and edited when I saw it included.

There are at least five guys I would put in before Charlie's name came any where near the top of the list but that is all a matter of opinion.

Bottom line is that until the Americans start treating this thing like the Euro's do they are going to be drawing dead. No one can convince me the Europeans are more talented but they do approach this thing with a much better attitude and plan. Again IMO of course.

Agreed! Stevie Moore is another good choice for new talent on America's team. Johnny, Shane, Hillbilly, Hatch and Moore. Ding ding, I think we have a winner! But you and I know our team will never look like this. Not unless I'm the captain and get to pick a couple of the guys.

It's hard to leave Schmitty off any American squad. But his mind has to be right. On his good days he's got awesome talent. But when he goes into a funk, he is very vulnerable. And Shannon is fearless! I'd take him or Hillbilly depending on who is playing the best right now. I sure wish there were still six players on a squad like there used to be.

It's a tough call for those last 3 positions on the US team. Each player (Schmidt, Williams, Deuel, Daulton, Hatch, Bryant) has merit and would be a fine addition to the team.

Williams seems like a surprise choice to some, but he's been playing really well this year. He's been the cause of a lot of upsets and has been far more consistent than in recent years. He also has a decent track record against Mika, something that few people have these days.

Personally, I'd like to see Dalton on the team. After playing Efren so many times over the years, he's a fearless guy. He has the ability to take down the big guns like Immonen and Souquet with little hesitation.

Problem I would have with Daulton is his record in 9 ball. Not that good. Sure he does good in bank and 1 pocket, but the cup is 9 ball.

Everyone seems to be picking him because of the recent finish at the classic. Fan favs won't win this event.
