Mosconi Cup 2010 - Who would you pick?.

Agree with Jays selection for the US (Johnny, Rodney, SVB, Dennis & Corey) but Boyes has already been selected for the European Team.

What I would say is that whatever the teams are it will be a great match and the US needs all the experience it can get in the Team. The Mosconi Cup at The York Hall is almost certainly the most intimidating venue bar none. That's why I would go along with Jay's selections with Corey as my 5th pick he brings great experience and a real team spirit to the side.

See you all there in December "GO USA"

The team, Charlie Williams-Shane Van Boening- Dennis Hatch-Rodney Morris-Mike Dechaine-John Schmidt. They will WIN. :joyful:

I was born in Eastbourne, Sussex and lived around the South Coast various places, Brighton, Newhaven, Hassocks for a long time. Moved here to the USA which is now home and became a US Citizen as I plan on staying here for the rest of my life and my Wife is American. So yes I was English now a Naturalised American and of course as such will be supporting Team USA.

I am still a QPR Fan though, which of course is my "cross to bear in life". Of course I still look at how England do in everything and support them from afar when they aren't playing the USA, I even look at the Test Match scores!

You'd pick Williams, Dechaine, and Schmidt over Archer? What are you insane?

Don't get me wrong, all the other players are fantastic, but none of them can hold a candle to Archers experience and leadership.

I hate this mosconi cup selection process. It should be based on merit and recent preformance. Mike Davis just beat Dennis Hatch in new york in his home town at zuglans tournament and took 4th to corey and dechaine.

Archer has recent wins as well! But, some have omitted him! Its a popularity contest and name recognition. Not performance based. Oscar won zuglans last year and got an automatic slot. Mike dechaine should as well!

But, the usual suspects always getting slots is getting kind of old. Who ever it is that gets the slot should have some recent wins or top finishes to justify their slot.

Many of the usual suspects travel abroad and want those performances considered despite the barriers that prevent many up and coming players from those oppertunities to play and show case their skills.

You can not tell me shannon murphy is not qualified to represent the usa! Shawn wilkie is very capable as well but never given the honor despite his second place finish at valley vorge! I can go on and on hennessee took second to shane at valley vorge! He is never considered.

I want the representative to earn it and the selection based solely on this years performances in usa based events. That way it is fair to the up and comers that lack sponsors and invites to allow them to go overseas to showcase their talents.

Well I think I have vented enough on the selection process and believe the knowledgable folks here got my point.

I agree. It should only be based on US tournaments. If you are not sponsored in full, have a banker, or you or your family is rich you aren't going out of the country. Johnnyt

I understand your point, but some of it is based on rankings and then Matchroom have their say as well and without Matchroom involvement it would be difficult in this day and age to put it on. The top two in the BCA Rankings List automatically qualify for the team then Matchroom have at least two picks and the other last year was from the Fan Vote. However as I understand it the previous years MVP would auto qualify which would be Dennis Hatch. I cannot find out if Matchroom will still have two picks or if one of those will be a Fan Vote again. Johnny and Rodney qualify on ranking positions, I don't think either can be caught before selection. Dennis would qualify as MVP 2009 and I can't imagine they'd leave out SVB and he's third in the BCA rankings. That would leave one spot open and if a USA player other than those above won the US open I would think they might get the place. If you go strictly on BCA Rankings JA, RM, SVB would all qualify the last two would depend on US Open results. The two would probably come from Mike Deschaine, Corey Duel, Charlie Williams, Dennis Hatch, Donnie Mills, Kim Davenport, Stevie Moore and John Schmidt. It's difficult to decide on a formula to pick the teams because Matchroom also need to consider their sponsorship deals especially with regard to TV rights. They want the best players and most recognisable players there to get the best of all worlds. Personally I would have no problem if they simply took the top 5 from the BCA Rankings list for the US Team. But the Europeans would be more problematic if they just used the Euro Rankings, Mika, Darren and Ralf would not be picked.

Stop Press - Just heard the Non Playing Captains have been announced this morning, although their website has not yet been updated:

Team Europe - Johan Ruijsink
Team USA - Nick Varner

I guess my picks show how little I know. :sorry:

Your post proves my point. Last years mvp was not an automatic pick. Some years captains choice. The formula changes to keep the same usual suspects in attendance. The good ole boy network. Hatch never plays in us open for last 10 years or more and all you can base his pick on is his finish at zuglans!

Rodney is on again off again performer! BCA ranking is good but the formula is not posted so I am unaware of what they use and how much is external to usa!

Based on your post its a done deal and the biggest tournament of the year hasn't even happened! The us open!

Its just crazy!

The Mosconi Cup is the most entertaining spectator event in our sport. After all, it's Matchroom's event, so as long as they keep it exciting they can pick whomever they please. I see no reason to complain.

You appear to be missing a couple of points:

1. The BCA Rankings - Johnny and Rodney cannot be caught as top two in the rankings, even if someone elase wins the US Open, so yes their places are a 'done deal'.

2. How could anyone in their right mind leave out SVB?

3. It's Matchrooms Competition and they surely have the right to pick whoever they want to participate in the event. They have the right to use whatever formula they want to use and either publish or not. I agree it would be better to publish it after the preceeding years Cup is over so everyone knows where they stand.

IMO I don't think there is anyone that is worthy of a spot on the team, even under your rules of 'based on US results' that would not be considered for a place on the team. Look at the BCA Rankings and see who's there and it may well be that it's the same 'old boys network' that you mention. But thats because they are racking up the points in the competitions that the BCA uses for their ranking system. It's simple, if you want a place in the team, enter the tournaments that the BCA uses and play well in them.

im going to my first ever mosconi cup in december i cant wait, but i dont really keep up to date with pool as its rarely televised in uk, and i really want to see earl 'the pearl' strickland play, anyone know the chance of him playing?
