Mosconi Cup 2012 Day (4) Discussion

Johan's job today is easy. He's got five guys in form and if he put the names in a hat and pulled them out to set his Thursday order, he'd do just fine.

CJ's job today is difficult. He's got one guy in form and four guys struggling.
I think that he has to frontload the line up with Archer and Shane, and if he gets to the tiebreaker match, he must choose Archer, the one guy who has managed to deal well with the incredible presure that comes with the Mosconi Cup.

I agree, I couldn't imangine the pressure on the 4th and 5th guys if the first 3 pull off the wins.

Regardless it's a tough spot to be in...

For those who say that pride is the main motivator at the Mosconi Cup, I'll have to say the I wonder if it's the case. The $7,500 difference between first and second place is a huge amount in this sport, about what the winner at Turning Stone will earn next month. Make no mistake, these guys are in big action and they'll have to fade the pressure that comes with it. Pride is a motivator, but personally, I doubt it is the main one.

At the Ryder Cup, members of Team America typically have made about $3,000,000 in the year leading up to the event. Pride is their main motivator. Pool is a sport in which their are few significant paydays, and the Mosconi Cup offers one of the better ones. Pride is a factor, but the money looms large in the lives of players whose incomes are relatively small.

I was lucky enough to schedule my work around the first 3 days and watch live, today is not the case and I'm hoping they lose power for an hour and a half.

The crowd have their part to play in making the Mosconi Cup a
TV friendly event. So fingers crossed for a lively crowd this evening,
but one which knows where to draw the line when creating an
exciting atmosphere for Pool.

Sadly, there are too many idiots this year who are unable
to control themselves after a couple of beers.

Respect for Johnny Archer from this side of the pond for handling
it well. Dennis Hatch made a valid point regarding the clowns who are
whooping/cheering/whistling/shouting out at the wrong time.

A few idiots have embarrassed the European crowd this year.

Looking forward to watching, what I hope will only be two hours of action
this evening. Although, if needed, the fridge is well stocked to see me
through five or even six hours.

If you have been able to watch the Mosconi on ESPN's link then you can also watch on your mobile devices by downloading the WatchESPN from google play or the I-tunes stores.

Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. The WatchEspn service depends on your television provider having a deal with the service, allowing you to watch the channels on that service that you subscribe to on your TV. Not all providers have such an arrangement, including both major satellite providers.

The ESPN3 service is based on your internet provider. If, for instance, you have TV through one of the satellite services, but your internet elsewhere, then you can watch on ESPN3 on your pc, but not through the WatchEspn app. As another example, some of the companies that sell tv/internet bundles may block the app if you do not have their tv service, but do have their internet service.

One way to get around this on a tablet device is to use a browser that will play flash videos, and direct that browser to the site rather than using the app.

Lineups

In a normal team match where you're starting even, I've always felt you
should play your best player third....he always gets to play.
But the last one to play should be a 'rock'...you know, the guy you would
like to bet on in a big stakes game if it was a fair game.
I feel in this situation, Johnny Archer is the 'rock'.....
...he can dig deep.

The order of lineup is more important to the US team, as several players are just not as strong as the others, and one of the best is off his game.

There are good arguments on previous posts, regarding who to shoot when.

I played in roughly 40 team tournaments between 1973 and 2008. My teams had a 90% plus winning percentage. We always played our two best players first and last. Those were the most pressure-packed games.

Alternate links

Does anyone have good links for the show??

Haha or usa etc.... please post them

Ray

I gotta say between the jacket and that "The game is the teacher" thing CJ is tilting the shit out of me lately.

Every time I see him tag it on a MC related post it reminds me of the rapper in Tropic Thunder slipping BootySweat promos in the movie.

"You must spread some reputation around"...

That said..

Go Team USA!

...................................................
Well. It's all on now.

I heard somewhere that there has been a tie in past Mosconi cups. Mathematically it could end 10-10. What happens then??? How are the players paid?? Do they play a sudden death?

Gonna be exciting for sure!!

Although the US is down by a lot, especially from a 3-1 lead at the start, they have been getting some bad rolls, play a good kick off a safe, and scratch (SVB double-kiss into the opposite corner, Shuff made a ball in the side and scratched behind it, others...). Euro players getting rolls, and some of our players missing shots they really would not normally is not helping. I have seen the US hand up some shots that for some reason fall for Euro players, bang off the points a few times and in. Alternate break race to 5, a single bad turn of the ball can mean the set, and has. Maybe they can get some rolls back on the last day. If you don't get a clear shot when it's your break every time in this format even once, the odds are against you to win.

We have certainly had some bad rolls. The one that comes to mind was the obvious skid that Dechaine had on a 6 ball (I think it was a 6 ball). However, the Europeans have had some bad rolls as well. The difference is - the U.S. team can't afford any bad rolls, while the Europeans can. It has been that way for a few years now, where the U.S. team has to play near their best. The Europeans haven't had to play near their best and this tells me they have clearly been the better team for several years now.

I love Jay's commentary most of the time. But some reason he goes off the air durig the MC.

Hatch cheated the pocket as much as he could on the one to get shape for the 2.

Jay says it was a mistake. No way to get it any closer to the two.

pffft

Dennis got a SKID ON THE 8 but it went, good sign !!!

Jay being tough on Denniis, imo.

Man this is tough to watch.. What a gift after almost giving away a second game.. Now that's a good roll if I've ever seen one for Hatch!
