Mosconi Cup Players Announced - Press Release

The first of the remaining three wildcard picks is...

I found this part of the press release interesting. The 1st 4 top point getters are in, and then there's Johnny. So, they only really "needed" one wildcard pick.

Regardless, it's Matchroom's $$$, they run an awesome tourney and IMO they believe Johnny will make them more money than other choices. And I have to agree. And I also think the Johnny choice will give us our best chance of competing with an awesome Euro team.

Yeah, it kinda sucks for Oscar (and the others that were also ahead of Johnny). But all one has to do is look back at Matchroom's varied selection criteria to know there's always a surprise or two. They must believe they need that wiggle room to make the event better for all.

I think the team is great. That said, JA should not have been picked. After 15 (or whatever) consecutive appearances, let someone else have a chance who has more points. I think OD or SM should have been picked. I mean, JA has a 53% win percent - that's barely holding your own.

Anyways, I love the pick for captain as well as the other 4 players. So overall, I'm very excited about this year's mosconi cup.

Umm, did you not see Oscar the last time he made the team? 'Nuff said.

I think the team is great. That said, JA should not have been picked. After 15 (or whatever) consecutive appearances, let someone else have a chance who has more points. I think OD or SM should have been picked. I mean, JA has a 53% win percent - that's barely holding your own.

Anyways, I love the pick for captain as well as the other 4 players. So overall, I'm very excited about this year's mosconi cup.

I like the idea of giving someone else a chance and not just because of more points.

However, Johnny is playing some of the best pool of any player in America. I saw this at the recent New Iberia, LA tournament at Emerald Billiards when as I recall, Shane had Johnny stuck 9-2 and Johnny came back and made a hill-hill match of it. I wouldn't put Johnny on the shelf just yet. He's still got a lot of high octane left in him. No need to send him to the Senior side of competition just yet. :wink:

Looks like a winning team! Congrats to Brandon and CJ! I played Brandon a couple months ago and was really impressed with his power, grace, attitude and style...really nice game and person. IMO, Johnny Archer is the necessary maturity in the mix, like the dash of bitters in an Old Fashioned, a proven winner.

I got no dog in this race.
I'm not too fond of the ABP.
I've only talked to JA a few times over the years.

But I think Johnny Archer is a good choice...
...he's the rock on this team.

USA MOSCONI CUP TEAM -----It's not possible to all agree on teams whether it's football, basketball or in this case pool. I'm confident this is the best Team in America at this particular time. Johnny ended the year with 3 - 2nd place finishes and lost two finals by 1 game. (Alex Twice and Shane once).After the US OPEN consideration this is the team that we're confident in. If Stevie, Oscar, Shawn, Rodney or Corey would have finished stronger at the OPEN it would have made a difference. Johnny is just too strong of a player and his experience in the Mosconi Cup is unequalled which is certainly another key factor. With that said, I'm glad to have everyones support and I'm confident this TEAM will perform in an amazing fashion. I will use every resource available though my playing and management experience to make sure we're Ready For Battle at York Hall. I totally agree with CJ here. Johnny is playing good right now and his experience can only help Team USA. He is the glue that will hold the team together, kind of the backbone of the team. Mr. Reliable if you will. Anyone who has him for a partner can have confidence in his ability to hold up his end, and more. I like the pick! I don't see Team Europe blowing out this team like they did the last two years. It should be a good Cup, going right down to the wire.

Here's the way I size up our team (remember I have to be neutral when I'm there).
Shane - A tough match-up for anyone that faces him, period!
Dechaine (rhymes with Shane :wink - Playing the best pool of his life right now.
Hatch - Power, confidence, fearless and inspirational, what's not to like.
Shuff - The new kid on the block. He will be emotional and fired up! Good for team chemistry.
Archer - The Rock! Mr. Reliable will come through time after time and keep Team USA on an even keel.
