Mosconi Cup "Qualifing" ...Don't Like It

Simply have some Sage old Pool Savant as the CEO of Team USA.. Think about it....Much like Colango and Coach K for Team USA in Basketball. The Team USA CEO chooses a seasoned coach like Nick Varner, and between the two...in collusion..choose the team... No discussion....that's it.

And I'm betting the team would win...BIG.

I don`t like the qualifying format either. The last two years it has produced Putnam and Shuff, both disasters. We need to find a way to put the five best pressure players in the US on the team. There is no place to hide a weak player on a five man team.

Are you serious, disaster you say, we lose 11-9 and it a disaster, if we would of won all of you people that are saying all this negative bullshit blameing shuff and Mike d would of been the first ones saying how great they were, someone has to lose and win, USA lost in a very close race to 11, one of the best mosconi cup ever and still people always has something to complain about, well go bark up another tree, what REALLY HURTED USA WAS HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE, that iam sure had Shuff and Mike uncomfortable, they mite not of played their best, but i for sure know they were trying their hardest!

No way will anybody ever beat Europe by a big margin, do you realize all the great players they have, i hate to say it but there best 5 players will always be favorite over our best five players or any other countries best five!

I like the qualifying format a lot.

You play your way onto the team by performing in the highest pressure events on the American Pool Calendar, such as Derby City, The US Open 9-Ball , the US Open 10-ball, Turning Stone, etc. Those who failed to make the team did not deal as well with the pressure of these elite-field events as those who made the team. On what basis is one to assume that those who cannot overcome that kind of pressure will suddenly be able to deal with the far greater pressure of the Mosconi Cup?

Having one wild card choice works for me as well. I noted when the pick was made that Archer was worthy because of his Mosconi Cup experience and his win over Shane in two of three races to 25 in their TAR match. Some others, such as Oscar Dominguez and Stevie Moore, would have made worthy wild cards picks, too.

This just in, the best pressure players are the ones who are up to the pressure of the toughest events played on American soil, and they WERE the players who were on our Mosconi Cup team this year.

Despite the hard-to-fathom absence of Souquet, Europe had a fine team and Team America gave them a serious run for their money. Give Europe credit but our guys gave them a true test. Both Johan and Darren in the post-match interviews took note of the great heart shown by Team America in the late stages of the competition. That means a lot to me and, I'll bet, to many other fans of Team America.

If you take away appelton and melling and JA and SVB. Europe becomes huge favorites in my eyes.

To be honest, a European B-team of Ralf Souquet, Thorsten Hohmann, Mika Immonen, David Alcaide and Mark Gray would be awfully hard for any team of five Americans to beat.

Still, just wait until next year!

Mosconi

We all love pool here but i think this event would be better if it was played every two years. The RyderCup wouldn't have the same impact if played yearly. Base team selections over a two-year span would produce better teams and even more drama. Moving U.S. venue around wouldn't hurt either. My $.02 worth

better than the filipino team?

just my opinion but they would win if more games were played (14.1, one
pocket, rotation) but still in a short 9 ball race they would still be the
favorites....

what is the qualifying procedure?

I don't think we exactly had a weak player to hide, but what is the
qualifing procedure? What tournaments? What value for each tournament?

Not much of a disaster this year. The choice of team coach was good as was the players. No shame in such a close score. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this year more than others.

The new guys are moving up and they happen to be the best that USA has to offer. They earned the right to be there.

Just like being a rookie soldier in the line of fire. You're going to get a few bullets whizzing by your head before you learn when its a good time to duck for cover.

Every veteran pool player was a rookie at one time and they have to get their feet wet at some point.

I this this USA team could be an even bet against any European team:

SVB

Archer

Earl

Morris

Deuel

Those guys might be better than Europe's team this year. Mika and Ralf are obviously legendary players

I think the Philippines top 5 would take down Europe:

Orcollo, Bustamante, Reyes, Corteza, and Pagulyan (if Alex is considered Canadian, then there are a bunch of other guys from the Philippines that could do damage such as Alcano, Lining, Kiamco, Parica, etc.)

Even a Phillipines top 5 B team could beat Europe! I'll take Jeff de Luna, Warren Kiamco, Jose Parica, Carlos Biado and Antonio Lining.

Add some Roberto Gomez in there too.

I think our team deserves a lot of credit, it is easy to criticize someone, I for one can only imagine the amount of pressure put on these guys under that situation. My hat is off to them, as Americans do, we lick our wounds and get ready for the next battle, God Bless The USA.
