Mosconi Cup - Strickland

Pool hasn't been the most exciting spectator sport out there....however we STILL don't need someone like him doing these stupid antics. I really feel he's messed up in the head or something...

...As for Earl tarnishing Americas image abroad, LOL what a joke, I'm afraid your president already beat him to that, there's not alot left that anybody can tarnish there.

LONG LIVE KING EARL

Now that is a funny, funny comment.

Everybody move to Canada, smoke lots of pot!

Re:Earl Strickland

Not to make a direct comparison but Pete Rose accomplished more than most baseball players ever hope to during their career but what did he contribute to baseball the sport that fed and made him a rich man? To appreciate a persons talent is one thing but using that as a guideline to not hold that person accountable for his actions is just wrong. The professional sports figures mentioned and their all to often criminal, perverted actions do add color and interest to their sports but should they be applauded or excused for their action? Are any of you having your children watch these people and telling them this is how you want them to behave? Either a yes or no answer is a strong indicator of the path you would like to see society take. Earl Strickland is argueably the greatest pool player ever. I love to watch him play. Because I am a fan of his I am embarrased by his conduct and I feel he has let me (and his other supporters) down. Personally, I think he has a psycological problem and needs help.

and lets face it, rules are rules, i would be a little pissy myself if someone else got to bend the rules. i wish i knew earl personally. from what i have seen he is someone who has a very high level of passion for the sport-the game of billiards. his passions are shown through his expressions, he appears to be a man of strong principle. i will tell you this - in passing in the hotel hall way at the GCO he is a gentleman and should be respected as one of the all time greatest in the sport along with you johnny.

I agree with berry the reason fans come and watch pool is for the action the drama and lets face it if earl didn't start to chunter then it would be the same it's like berry said if McEnroe didn't have an outburst with a "YOU CANNO'T BE SERIOUS" chucked in it would not be the same.

So to the pearl haters I say this the fans pays there money and takes their choice and if they can't handle earls antics the its simple DON'T WATCH!.

I can't believe some people are actually defending what Earl did, I have alot of respect for his game but he definitely crossed the line, again:rolleyes:

I know a lot of people here like Earl and his attitude, but to insult the entire city? For what? That is uncalled for. Argue with ref. or spectators or your opponent, do whatever he wants, but insult London? Good that he never will be voted to HOF, he is not a good ambassador of the game, he's not expecting that anyway.

What has he done for us lately (major titles)?

His tactic doesn't seem to be working.
I guess ya got me there. I'm not condoning what he does, it was just a thought on WHY he does it. I couldn't do the things he has done, not my style, but it works for him, somehow, some way, the guy is a winner ON the table. That's my .02 on the subject. Peace, John.

Earl is awesome....I am an English and know for sure the UK fans would have been provoking him, they love it, we love, the TV ratings love, Earl probably even loves it.....

Get a grip people and be proud of a national treasure....if you want all you players to be boring and have zero character prehapes you should play another game....

Rodney Morris has character and personality. So does Keith McCready. What separates them from Earl?

CLASS

My two cents

My observation is that many people here in love with the game (i.e., Earls detractors) believe that pools lack of mainstream success is a result of its character / reputation. If this were true than Earls behavior could be a contributing factor to the problem. I on the other hand am not of the same opinion.

People in general love a train wreck -
Why does AZ choose to post this picture on the front page ?
It generates interest and ... It sells!
Why are there four pages in this thread that started just this morning ?
It generates interest and ... It sells!
Why does Mike Tyson, well out of his prime, still get paid millions per fight?
He generates interest and ... It sells!

Is his behavior out of line? - Yes
Does it hurt pool? - I don't think so!

Long live Earl Strickland, an American legend who has accomplished more in his pool career than any living pool player on our soil.

The "sport," if we can call it that now, abandoned pool players many decades ago. Greed and politics ruined its chance of ever elevating to an acceptable status. World-class players have been competing for peanuts, and even the fortunate sponsored ones barely make ends meet due to the exhorbitant expenses associated with traveling the globe.

I'm glad that Earl Strickland is representing the United States, and I hope to see him many, many, many more times in the future! GOD BLESS AMERICA and Earl Strickland!

Jam,

I don't post that often, but I read quite a lot of the posts on this forum. I'm not surprised at this post by you, I've heard the complaints before about lack of money. I will say that I usually really like your posts, but you are way off the mark here.

Look, it's not all promoters and people behind the scenes to blame for pool's status. What about the pool players themselves? I don't recall a certain pro telling me he was a TOP professional or even a professional when asking me to play $20 sets in Vegas a few years ago. Maybe he just assumed that most pool players know who he is, but I doubt it. He hadn't won a ring game on ESPN back then. I think the image of pool is right on for the most part. Look at how many threads there are on hustling or gambling in this forum. You'll never have huge audiences with suits and champagne glasses.

And what about the choices the players themselves make? Were pool players making a lot of money at any time during the past 20 or 30 years? If not, why are they still in it? Why do they get into it in the first place? Because they love it? Hell, I love it and I play every day, but I wouldn't quit my job to try to become a pool pro for the prospect of making less money than I do now. Also, if they have been screwed over so much for such a long time, why do they just continue to take a beating? I just don't get it.

As far as Earl, I can stomach his antics when he's playing by himself, but in a team event representing my country, he's the last person who deserves to be there.

About the head of a truly GREAT horse,
there is an air of freedom unconquerable.
The eyes seem to look on heights beyond OUR gaze.
It is the look of a spirit that can soar.

It is not confined to horses.
Even in his pictures, you can see it
in the eyes of the Bonaparte.
It is the birthright of eagles.

And Earl.

If you ever get a chance, watch a session of the "House of Commons" from London. That is how the english politicians treat their Prime Minister. These politicians are supposed to be amongst the most "respected" of people. If our President was subjected to that by our congress, I think he would run straight past Crawford, TX and into Mexico. Now, lower the bar to a group of Las Vegas partying, beer drinking, english railbirds. You can imagine what Earl was hearing (Ever seen a soccer match??) I am willing to bet that Earls "you suck....." comment was in RESPONSE to more and much worse being said to him.

Earl is now the member of a TEAM. The Mosconi Cup. Not the EARL CUP. There is no way to justify his childish behavior.

Tap, Tap, Tap.

Like him or hate him, he showed a TREMENDOUS amount of disrespect for his TEAM MATES. In a setting like this, that is unforgivable. IMHO

OK, so if I understand your thinking. In your opinion, it was VERY WRONG for President Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, indeed most of America to bash all of France when the disagreement was with the French President. And (to further your thinking, as I understand it) President Bush is a poor ambassador for the country. Am I missing anything???
