Mosconi Idol Pick Is A Joke On The US

please take your head out of you butt.

please ,urackmicrackm ,how can you say when a player ( Dennis Hatch ) was in third place and he moves up to the lead that he's a player that apparently had no chance seriously are you on drugs . Mr. Hatch happens to be one of the best players in the US. I don't know who won the vote yet but if Dennis isn't the winner I am not going to cry and distort things the way you did . I will say however that the idea of letting people out of the US vote for our fifth man seems unfair.

Who cares about the Mosconi Cup anyways. In the end, you're only remembered by the individual championships you win. It's fun to watch, but it's fluff at best....just like the Ryder Cup. No one could tell you who won the cup in ____ year unless you looked it up online.

That's why Earl should have been included. Since it's fluff, you might as well make it entertaining.

He only had 13% of the vote and most on here had written everyone off but Rodney or CW. A lot of people on here were campaining for people to vote for Rodney to ensure that CW didn't get it because voting for anyone else was a waste according to the numbers matchroom posted.

I've got to admit people getting their undies in a bunch because of one small persons opinion on this is quite comical.

Mr. Hatch is a great player and I'll leave it at that.

Besides JohnnyT's opener, this is probably the best so far -- not so much lambasting the process itself, but convinces you to look at it a different way.

It's a silly short race, us-versus-them team tournament -- with war-painted faces in the stands to boot. Once I saw this whole "Mosconi Cup Idol" thing come out, I'd pretty much changed my view of this tourney. It's now no longer our best vs. their best; to me, it's just entertainment now.

The only thing that chaps my @ss about this "event," is that it has Mosconi's name -- a name associated not with entertainment, but rather with excellence at its highest level -- attached to it.

IMHO, they should change this to the "Matchroom Cup" or something. Perhaps for the purposes of injecting much-needed funds into our sport, perhaps a sponsor can purchase the name rights for that year, e.g. "The 2009 Predator Cup", and the proceeds could go into the prize fund. Or something along these lines.

"Mosconi Cup" = excellence? I think not. But hey, I voted for my "idol," someone who think can really help Team USA, anyways, keeping the entertainment value in the back of my mind.

IF somehow each voter did in fact only have one vote register, then it's possible that there was only a few thousand votes when the first interim results were posted with Hatch at 13%. My point being, it's easier to jump from 13% to 22% when there's been fewer votes cast.

I hope they divulge the total votes registered. If they do, and that # is believeable, then IMO that lends some credit to this process.

I agree, Sean. They should take Mosconi's name of that event. Matchroom Cup is perfect, imo.

I quit giving a shit on who was getting the votes when Charlie Williams was getting 2-1 the votes of John Schmidt. Among knowledgeable peers, I hope I wouldn't have to explain why that is the queerest result on planet earth.

But hey, you make yourself a circus and the clowns show up.

Here's a good idea. If you have 4 american players and you need #5, how about you let THOSE 4 AMERICAN PLAYERS pick their 5th guy?

Anyways, wake me up when it's over. *yawn*

I don t see this as any big deal. Those 8 guys are just about all equal on any given day. The important thing is No Earl. That being said, the USA has virtually no chance IMO.

Good point SpiderWebComm

If this vote were conducted on this forum alone, Charlie Williams might get skunked. He is clearly the least popular player on that board, if not of all professional players in America. I don't know the guy personally, I played with him at the 1993 BCA Junior's in Kansas City and I saw him a couple of times in Florida, but I can say he comes off as kinda aloof, which will not win you too many popularity contests. Even Tiger lets his guard down outside the ropes, that never seems to be the case with CW.

The part of your post that I bolded is my sentiments exactly.

This event held (past tense) a certain amount of prestige in my mind for a number of reasons. Matchroom has always put on quality events and treated the players well and they seemed to have their act together. It was a chance to showcase our best against the best Europe had to offer. Getting a spot on the team was an honor. The honor came from being chosen due to the achievements they worked so hard for, not because they had won a popularity vote.

But... The vote is between 8 guys that are highest on the BCA points list. It's not just a popularity contest as achievement is factored in to a large extent.

Posts stating it's just a popularity contest to get #5 are being a little disingenuous IMO (and no urackm, I'm not pointing out your entire viewpoint in one bold, it was just that you were handy. ;)).

We are going to field 5 damn good americans; ones that have done extremely well in the last year. All will be in the top of the top of BCA points. I don't get a lot of this criticism. This is a difficult process for anyone to choose the best 5, especially for the profit driven company that runs the whole shebang.

You guys are really slamming Matchroom, they probably thought it would be a good way to get the fans involved, we all know its a popularity contest. I am sure next year will not be a Mosconi Idol voting deal like this, it will be a mini tournament hopefully round robin style. This event is a good event with top players in it and the promoters of the event treat the players well and put money in their pockets so we should not be so hard on them IMO.

I also thought giving the fans a chance to vote for one player was kind of cool and brought something new to the event. I think eight players was too many though. It kind of diluted the vote. Four or five would have been more than enough.

The Mosconi Cup remains one of the best pool events of the year. The energy and excitement is unmatched in any other pool tournament I go to. And I know it will be the same in Vegas this year.

Agreed, I thought it was great to vote. and so I voted..anyone hear anything on the winner ? today is the 15th and ther are 5 hours ahead of us..GO USA.....

today is the 16th dude, voting is long over. prolly somewhere people are laughing at all this banter. i refuse to add to it till the winner is announced. i campaigned for my choice and the votes are being counted or not, who knows. i just wish they would make an annoucment !

pool sucks.

Did Earl decide he didn't want to play in it or do they dislike him and won't let him on the team?

They should have at least blocked foreign IPs which would have weeded out a good deal of votes. Anyone with some knowledge could have gotten around that by using a US proxy site to vote, but not everyone knows about that stuff.

Who would set up a voting page for the pick of the last American player for the Mosconi Cup team and set it up so anyone in the world could vote? It's a joke. Johnnyt

and we will be the last to know the results jt !!!

That's true, but for the ones that do, it's not far of a stretch to say that once they found an open/exploitable U.S. proxy server, those same folks also likely posses the knowledge to leverage it to the next step, and link a Botnet or a network of drones (i.e. exploited/"owned" PCs/Macs) to it.

Even though I participated and somewhat campaigned for my personal choice (for genuine concern for the best selection of the eight), I'm just not a fan of a popular vote, precisely because all popular vote mechanisms by way of Internet, unless strictly controlled, can be exploited.
