Moves And Other Sharking Techniques at DCC

Pros get away with Sharking? or is it just Disrespect?

Is it really necessary to chalk your tip 27 times?
Taking 2-3 minutes per shot?
Picking up invisible lint?
Talk to the crowd when your opponent is shooting?
Get out of your chair to look at the table layout?
Call for a ref when it is not really necessary? (have you ever seen a ref give an unsportsmanlike warning for this?)
Show up late for a match and get pissed because you complain about them spending 15 minutes PRACTICING?

Where did they learn how to get away with these acts?

Back in the day if you sharked someone in a money game you might get taken outside by the other players friends that had money on him. Too many lawyers now a days. It seems everyone has their lawyer on speed dial. Shoot em in the head I say. Then you have one less sharker and any sharkers looking on refrained from it in that joint. Johnnyt

Sharking

I was playing a match at a Major Event and my opponent was cracking sunflower seeds in his teeth while I was shooting. I asked him to stop and he refused. I stopped and reported him to the tournament director. The TD just shrugged his shoulders and did nothing.

This guy will get a bullet someday from someone.

Does anyone think that asking your opponent to remove his personal chalk AFTER EACH OF HIS INNINGS from the table as bad form?

Their personal chalk isn't a big distraction for me, although I am tempted to use the nearest piece of chalk to me. I wonder if they might consider it a move if I smeared their chalk on my cue tip?

i have my own chalk.
after my turn i take it with me.

These are just a few sharking deals, in the old day cigarettes & cigars were great for getting someone's attention at the right time. There are many many ways to distract an oppenent, some we haven't even thought of.

While this behavior still goes on, Pool Players try to make a living... any way they can. However this is a behavior that should be governed in a Tournament. I know it won't stop, people are just people & WINNING is EVERTHING..... to some.

I think there is a little bit of sharking in everyday life.... look at the wave in Basketball, the intentional offside in Football, the curveball in baseball, the shi**y stocks sold by EJ, ML & SWB.

Integrity means nothing anymore... look at Congress. They are supposed to be the finest body of government on the planet & none of them are honest.

Honesty is passe...

The worst sharking move that I saw, and it was used by many, was taking a break in the middle of the game. I have been to many, many major tourns., and I can't remember any other where it was allowed. Most all tourns allow breaks, but between games, not during the game. I do not think that should be allowed.jmo

I have to admit that I have made an emergency bathroom exit in the middle of a game. Either too many beers or bad food!!

The worst is the loud talker!! He will strike up a loud conversation with the rail birds while you are shooting, during a match with him OR his buddies! Get a rope!

(no wonder we have so many road rage incidents)

I see that posters have included sharks from other tournaments other than the DCC and that is hardly a hijacked thread and so I will share another one which I observed.

At another tournament, Player A was in dead punch and subject to beat anyone in the world at that point in time.

The tournament director was sitting at the table watching the match in progress. Player A got down on an important shot (facing the direction of his opponent) and as he was stroking Player B started sanding his shaft with a frenzied motion that would shock anyone except someone who was completely blind. Player A got up off the shot and gave the WTF look and gestured with his hands. Player B then acknowledged the error of his ways and stopped sanding his shaft. As Player A got back down on his critical shot and in the final stages of pulling the trigger, Player B cocked his head up quickly toward where the rail birds were located and started an animated conversation with lots of head movement.

The tournament dirctor never uttered a word. Maybe it is not the job of a tournament director to stop sharking as I don't know if that is their responsibility or not.

Player A pulled the trigger and missed the shot by a diamond and it was only an average difficult shot but so critical that the double sharking proved fatal. It was the beginning of the match and Player A was sharked out of stroke completely. It was a sad state of affairs. Player A was angry but controlled his anger but could no longer control his stroke. Player A lost the tournament because Player B double sharked him.

I think I will continue to address any type of sharking and like I said, players who shark me the second time will not like it and I don't care who it is. They might be able to whip my ass on the table or off but they are going to come out on the losing end because when I sink my teeth into something it is hard for me to let go. It will take more than a stick across my head to make me quit and I guess I am just fed up with the sharking and am just not going to take it anymore.

For the record, those who feign ignorance of their sharking, I will give them one chance in life. After that, they will hear and feel scorn that they never imagined regardless of who they are.

One of my new and good friends (that I met at the DCC from overseas no less) suggested that I do what they do and that is to simply look at the person and wait until they stop doing the distraction because it will make them look stupid. I beg to differ and believe that these people are so callous that more has to be done to alter their behavior.

Anyway, I hope that sharking becomes less and less as it is exposed and I urge all players to deal with sharking as they please. For me, it will be direct and immediate.

For those who say that their opponent will have to be dancing in front of them for it to bother them, I call BS or it is is just that they have never been in a difficult tournament or never had a large sum of money bet.

People shark because it works regardless of whether someone thinks it doesn't and they shark because they get away with it.

But that is all coming to an end for me...........

I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!   :D ;)

I believe most tournaments allow one break in a match when the player is at the table, any time during the game, just as long as it is the player's inning.

What if the guy needs to get to the restroom, fast?

One of the worst things to happen to someone in the middle of anything is to get a bad case of da runs... capiche?

If someone needs to go, I say let 'em go.

Flex

P.S. Some of the guys who come in off the street to shoot some pool bring a stench with them. As if they just stepped in it, if you know what I mean. Letting them wash their hands is a courteous gesture that everyone should welcome.

Since you opened up the thread outside of the DCC, allow me to reply :D

As stated, sharking is unacceptable....just like hustlers of old, these guys deserve broken thumbs....there is no gamesmanship in acting out of character to cause someone to miss....whether it's waving a flag, dancing around the pocket, talking loudly, or anything else, that type of crap deserves an old school beating......you can beat an opponent with defense, pocketing skills, and hundred others ways that DO NOT require you to "drop your pants"

People make mistakes, and they should be given a chance....as you said, they get one chance...you make a request, they should comply.....then they become fair game....

And to the poster that states that honestly is out of style.....agreed, too many people think it's ok....but I believe that is where we stand in and speak up.....taking advantage of people, whether with a shark, or in any other way, should have aggressive consequences and not be accepted...

Thanks Joey.. this is a really good thread from which I'm learning a lot. I'm old but I haven't "been around" much.

Rare Photo

This is a young Joey A. I wasn't there but I heard he was saying," did you just wave your towel?"
