Mr. CJ Wiley, questions and answers thread, ask what you want to know?

I never played Joe

cj did you ever play Joe Salazar aka Mexican Joe he marred a childhood friend of mine from Alabama if you did do you have any stories of the match thanks

No I never played Joe, he was slightly before my time. He was a well respected player, but we never crossed paths.

Is this question really coming from "Mr. Bond"......Mr. James Bond?

I was named after a distant relative Kit Carson (an old west "straight shooter"), the J stands for nothing but J, just so I could be called "CJ" was the info I got and it turns out it's true.

Carson J Wiley ... and as funny as it seems I hardly ever used my real name on the road, it was always "Mike," "Chris," "Butch," but rarely Carson.

I think "Carson" is a cool name. It's different. I like it!

Jam,
I like that name too. It, was one of my favorite movies back in the days. I love Cowboy movies anyway. It is very becoming for Captain CJ.

Hey CJ, did you ever make it to Albuquerque? Ever play Cowboy Jimmy Moore or Louie Royball or Louie Coriell?

edit: Also...here's a poolhall that needs help ASAP! http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=317794

Just reposting this in case you forgot...I know you replied to the poolhall in trouble, but apparently forgot to reply to my question...they may have been before your time, but I know Jimmy was around.

I was around Cowboy Jimmy Moore in Albuquerque several times at the Corner Pocket and stayed around that city quite a bit one summer (my mother lived there for two years). I even played at the Yucca Lounge.

My reputation was pretty strong by that time (I was 21) and Louis and the local players would not match up any fair games. This is the exact time I went to Vegas and won the World Series of Tavern Pool, and that was a giant "knock" for awhile.

I won a lot of money in the Las Cruses and El Paso areas back then, there was a lot of action in the bars around that area. Ruidoso had the horse races that drew in a lot of gamblers as well.

Cowboy Jimmy Moore was a great player and even in his 80s he ran a lot of balls playing straight pool I recall. He just couldn't play me 9 or 8 Ball at that time, he was on his way down and I was jumping up by leaps and bounds.

Sounds about right for Abq, more action now. Jimmy ran 103 on his 83rd birthday. Louie Royball busted Fatty in 1pkt when he came to town for a big tournament at the Western Skies in the early 70's, looking for a "local" to play a little. Little did he know that this "local" was the top player in the world at that time in 1pkt. The Corner Pocket closed 7-8 years ago, was totally decrepit, and the Yucca Lounge closed a little before that...the owners were busted for illegal gambling machines in the back room. Thx CJ.

Ahhh, a rabbit is money. Makes perfect sense.
I was wondering why anyone would want 16 K in rabbits unless they wanted to start a rabbit farm. Or they liked rabbit stew a lot.

I eat big ole jack rabbits but never a cute little bush bunny. I have jack bunnies in my back yard. I just whack em with the bow and arrow. Neighbors started asking me about hearing gun shots a few years ago.

are Cane cutter Rabbits larger than Jack Rabbits? There are some very large Cane Cutter Rabbits down here in the Swamps and in Mississippi.

Jacks look a little bigger than the Cane Cutters.

But in reality, most likely the same rabbit, different name.

Very long hind paws and elongated heads. Pretty tall, even on all fours.

Dalton lived in Houston when he was playing some of his best pool

Hi CJ...

When I was growing up in San Francisco and learning pool, the biggest pool name out of Chinatown was Dalton Leong. You said in another thread that you knew him....I don't remember ever seeing him play (maybe he had moved away by the time I was into pool).....can you tell me about his playing ability or speed?
How did it compare with the great pros you have played......was he about shortstop speed? Thanks

Yes, I traveled with Dalton when I was 18 all through Minnesota and then made a "swoop through Texas".

When I first met Dalton we played in St. Louis at Afton Billiards for a few hours. We played very close, and I edged him out at the end, but he had some issues with his eyes and wasn't playing full speed. His eye problems plagued him and kept him for having anything but momentary stretches of excellence.

I could tell he had a higher gear in him, he just couldn't produce it for long periods of time, so I was the "up font" player and he played the role of the stake-horse and just hustled the weaker players.

Dalton lived in Houston when he was playing some of his best pool and played even with James Christopher, Rusty Brandmeier, Jay Swanson, etc.....He taught me a lot about martial arts, zen, and other far eastern philosophies and made a great impression on my life by introducing me to new ways of thinking and "being". I have enough "Dalton stories" for an entire book and I'll tell some of them eventually.

Dalton was tragically shot and killed in New York in an incident totally unrelated to pool. RIP Dalton Leong

My buddy captains our Thursday night team. He still rocks the mullet proudly. At first you are embarassed but then you get to witness all the awesome conversations it starts. Damn, it's funny.

Mr. CJ,
At what age you started playing pool ? How long it took you play at "pro-speed" ? How many hours you used to play ? Who was the first "pro-speed" player you beat for reasonable amount of money / or a significant tournament win ?

I know by reading through these forums that you used to give "handicap/spot" to match up, once you started playing pro-speed was there ever a player that gave you the spot and still beat you ?
