My DCC thread

Mikey

I saw him in Medford when I went on a business trip with my wife and sister-in-law. He ended up playing (and winning) the barbox tournament they had on the Diamonds one of the nights I was there.

He seemed to be hitting them about 85-90% as well as I remember him hitting them back in the day, but I think I am a better player now than I was then (at least I am according to Clark Smith, lol), so that may be due to a skewed perception.

I had heard some players in the local area commenting how Mike "wasn't THAT good", and that they were commenting on how they had such and such and so and so BCA Grandmasters in the area, and when I talked to Mike later after the tourney, he told me it was BS. He said there were no other BCA Grandmasters in the area, and that there was no one in the area who had even a chance against him.

And I believe him. :D All that talk was prolly just a bunch of local B players who can't identify real talent. Mike was a dominant player back when I was in Washington, and he was winning tournaments over Horsfall, Dan Louie, etc...

I believe one of his main strengths was that he consistently played safe off balls on the head rail, and got behind balls near the foot rail. he had REALLY good control of speed off long multi-rail safes like this, from his background as a very good three cushion player.

Not having any strong competition in the Medford area may have hurt Mike's game just a little.

A little Mikey story from last summer at a casino tourney.Mikey and Linda showed up,it was not a strong field and Mikey was clearly 1 of 2 top players in the building (Don W was there).Z man was clearly rusty and not playing like the Mikey of old.We matched up on the A side of the scotch bracket.Myself and my partner had a good shot at winning the tourney.Well Mike wasn't playing well but he was on top of his talking game lol.We ran a couple of racks and got on the hill with Zimmermans team needing 1 more game for the hill.I put Mikey in jail with a sweet safe and we proceed to run the rack...while Z is over there talking to his partner about me lol "who is this guy"."did you see that shot?".Well all I can think of is here is this legend watching me the nobody...I have a stop shot to leave my partner on a can't miss 8ball,CB 10 inches from the object ball straight in,I roll forward and hook my partner lol!

Mikey ended up blanking Don in the finnals of the masters bracket. There was a huge fiasco leading up to the match in wich they couldn't agree on a split.Don was on the a side and it was very late.Z man put on a big show and had everyone in the building talking.Don thinking he was getting skrewed on the split decided to play.Well Mikey went off winning the first set 9-0 and then they split even lol.

Jeanette stays in action. Played Brim Hat from Alabama 9-Ball and won, then played Ricky Byrd One Pocket and booked another winner. Now she's playing One Hole with Brim Hat. She's about five dimes ahead for the night, kind of a slow night for her.

.

Thanks for updates,Jay. I dunno,I smell rats here. Brim.. is a one pocket player and not a 9 ball player. He is setting her up for highway robbery!

Louis Roberts Award

So......if Ricky Byrd and Jeannette Lee are in contention for the Louie Roberts and Jeanette beats him when they match up does she then move ahead? :-)

Just my opinion. But, if you are thinking Jeanette is in contention, I can't agree. She may be playing the matches, but she is not entertaining or setting up the action. Has anyone seen her woofing and haggling the spots to set up a match? I believe Strong Arm John sets up the matches. I think, unless I'm mistaken, he's staking the matches too. If my thoughts are correct, he should be getting the award instead of her.

You may think that

The two backers involved have both confirmed to me that they flipped a coin for who to pick, because they just wanted the match to happen, and had tried to make it happen for several days.

I call it an exhibition match, but I am sure that also Efren had a little something on the side, but it was definitely not a "big gambling" match.

Still, Scott Frost is now unbeaten the last two "big" matches against Efren (8-6 and 5-3), so no doubt that Efren is no longer as superior as he used to be.

But you better stop and think about what Efren has been doing all week long. Let's see,,,,,,, Played the banks tourney, which he done quite well. On Sunday, while still playing the bank tourney, started his one pocket matches. Now, lets add on playing in the FatBoy tourney to that. I am 4 years younger than Efren. I work for a living, running my business, installing satellites. I also raise my 2 kids as a single Dad. Keeping up with all the household stuff, such as laundry, cooking, and various things. I'm pretty active and in good shape.

I only played the bank tourney, and I was getting run down by Monday, with my feet and legs hurting a bit. No offense intended to Scott, he's a great player. But you let both players have a week off, to rest, and then play. I'm still picking Efren to win. I saw a couple of shots from him, that I would never expect from any other player. He has to be wearing down right now. So, go ahead, count your chickens and place your bets. But in the end, I'll bet it costs you next time around.

By now you probably know that Efren won the Fatboy Challenge, defeating Brandon Shuff in the finals 15-8. He jumped out ahead 7-0 as Brandon was having trouble with the table speed and Efren played flawlessly. He did miss one cut shot on the ten ball but it banked two rails in the corner.

At 14-4 it looked like it was over, but Brandon woke up and won four games in a row. He even came close to winning one game by three fouling Efren. He had him on two and Efren had to kick to hit the one. He did manage a thin hit to keep the game a. live. I don't think I've ever seen Efren lose a game on three fouls. Efren won $6,500 and Brandon got $3,250 for second. All paid in cash immediately! No checks, no delayed payments or installments.

I think I have a One Pocket game with Roy tonight. We'll see.

last year at the derby svb 3 fouled Efren in the race to 23. Only time I've ever saw Efren fouled out. Shannon daulton was commentating an said he 3 fouled Efren once before as well as parica

John is helping her negotiate games. JL doesn't know all the players that well, but she is looking for the guys who will bet something. She definitely has got her money in the middle (and on the side). I can tell you that first hand.

I love watching Efren play, so graceful and elegant. Reminds me of Irving Crane with his soft touch around the balls. Efren doesn't so much punch balls into the pocket as caresses them in. No one else plays quite like him. Only Bustie is close.

Scott Frost and Sylver Ochoa played a terrific match, fitting of a DCC One Pocket final. Sylver is a great young player, only 24 years old. A rising star in the pool world. Only a year or so ago, they played in L.A. for 700 a game, and Scott spotted him 9-7, 8-7. If they matched up today, I think it would be more like 9-8, 10-8.

I played my last game at this year's DCC tonight. Roy and I finally got together for our friendly One Pocket match. I'm leaving in a few hours so we agreed to play two games, one break each. I got lucky once more, as Roy felt sorry for the old man, and gave me chances to win. I figured out by now I can't beat him side betting, so playing him is my last resort.

My gambling record this year is intact. Harry Platis (Banks), Artie B. (Banks) and Roy (One Pocket). Three wins, all for small money. Some things never change.

Thanks Jay, great stuff, drive safe going home...........

Definitely gets my vote for the Louis Roberts award!!! (unless something changes drastically the last 5 days)

Roy, I generally agree with you on here about most things. On this I have to disagree. JL sashaying around with her entourage (baby sitters, backers, rackers, handicappers, & groupies) is not entertainment in the action sense of the word. Action entertainment is the woofing going on between "The tool" and Jimmy Mataya and many others who are woofing and being entertaining while also getting in action.

Just my opinion. But, if you are thinking Jeanette is in contention, I can't agree. She may be playing the matches, but she is not entertaining or setting up the action. Well said satman.

I'll take your word for it, that JL actually has her money in play. And if that's the case, she deserves to be in the running. I'm not saying that a person being staked, should be ineligible to win the award. Just that they should have to do more than just get up and play. I saw a few people who were in action quite a bit while I was there. Not only in action, but woofin and stirring things up too.

You got Artie to play you BANKS? Jay, you're a helluva games maker! Thanks for all the nice updates!

I noticed that myself

I noticed also that Efren has a very full dance card this year by just reading the threads. The main events, the fatboy usually starting at midnight, plus gambling. Efren may not be Superman anymore but he is still probably the best all around player in the world when both people are equally rested.

With JL estimated annual income of $750,000, I think its very nice of her to put her financial $timulus into action at the DCC. Harry Platis, J Hendy, Mataya and a few other has beens have been at it too, nice to see. We can't take it with us, might as well put it into action and get stimulated by the game/woofing/ & back and forth banter.

Thanks for all your effort

Jay just wanted to say thanks for all your long hours put into making this the most informative thread on AZ during the DCC (IMO). You kepr us up with what we wnated to know THE ACTION.

You are a great asset to the pool world and since I missed you at this DCC will have to get that book later.

Thanks

I think it is super cool thats she is down there betting it up.

BTW, i love listening to you do commentary.

Anybody know the result of Roy Steffensen's match this morning? He was playing a friend of mine, Kingwang on here.
