My night out at the IPT event

I was one of the 50 invitees to the Bustamonte/Duel Internet match game last night. I would first like to say how amazed I am at all the criticism leveled at last night's festivities by so many AZ forum contributors. With all the beefing and squawking about the sound, and interruptions caused by a problem with the Internet streaming company in Calif., something that the IPT had absolutely no control over, you would think that the IPT was charging a Pay Per View price to see the show. It was a freebie, fellas, a freebie. Sheez. An ambitious, expensive attempt to get something started again for pool players. I, for one, had a good time. In my view the whole operation was a first class operation. The 50 sweators were treated to a lavish free buffet of food and drink before the match. Pizza from Giordano's, Italian Beef, Sausage, Poor Boy sandwiches, and salad. They had a sexy waitress bringing in free drinks all during the match. When I asked Grady if the IPT had finished paying off all their old debts to the players, he said the final payment went out and now everybody has gotten their money. Terrific, if true. With so much groaning about the IPT payouts I think back to my Johnston City days whereby you would have to stay 3 weeks and beat the 64 best players in the world to win $2000 for each event and $2000 for the all-around. I was dumb enough back then to think that that was generous. That should give you some idea of how poor other pool payouts were at that time. Those of you who watched the match online surely must have noticed the bevy of lovelies that were flitting around; The score girl, the director, the waitress, Bustamonte's 3 Filipino girlfriends, Rachel Abbink, and about 8 or 9 more beauties that had my old pal Mike Sigel thinking about getting hair plugs.
The best part, however, was the match itself. Bustamonte shot the numbers off the balls. Man, did he play good! Corey didn't really play badly, but Busty was breaking so good that Corey didn't get to the table often enough to win. On that slow IPT cloth, Busty was shattering the balls with his break. They're gonna do it all again on Mar. 5th. Hopefully, they will have the streaming problems ironed out by then. No matter, I'm still looking forward to the next one.

The Beard,

(Jeez, I just realized that this post is so IPT positive, maybe Trudeau might give me a job, or at least a couple of free self-help books.)

Get my bank DVD. There is a kiss beating lesson on it that I showed to an attentive Bustamonte at DCC.

I agree Freddy, they had problems with the match but it wasnt costing any of us a dime and we will all get to see it today on their site.I think the IPT was a great concept and perhaps there is still a chance it will work, the players seem to still be supportive of it and the idea of the money.I look at it that these guys are getting paid to do the exhibitions and a chance to win 5k,thats wonderful and shouldnt be knocked.Another good point where people are knocking Corey and saying his game is done, the kid played good,Bustamante was just playing better. ;)

Well, maybe we wouldn't have complained if we internet sweators had some of the above ;)

Seriously, I do agree that the IPT is making an effort to reclaim what they once had. It was a real shame that they squandered such a good thing by simply not paying the players at the last tournament. Everyone would have been more understanding if Trudeau had dealt with the problem head-on, dipped into his pocket, paid the players, and then announced that they would have to scale back the operation for a period of time. It was really handled poorly.

So now they've got to slowly rebuild what they once had. Good luck to them. I really do want to support everybody's efforts to further pool, whether it be action matchups, small tournaments, exhibitions, or large scale IPT style bonanzas.

I don't quite understand all of the negativity about the IPT. The past problems have been hammered home quite well already.

It seems that people who love pool would want to encourage the promoter to continue being involved with pool. I don't see anyone else stepping up to the plate to lead pool to the next level. I realize some people have had a bad experience and I truly empathize with that but it seems like Trudeau is making a good effort to rectify the problems of the past and to avoid some of them in the future.

In a short period of time, I see that he has put more money in pool players pockets than any other single entity. Yes, he has been a little slow on the draw but he is paying or has already made the late payments good.

It would be nice to see the anti-IPT crowd give them a chance to make the IPT a successful enterprise. The poolplayers have already been warned and are well aware of the risks involved.

so now instead of running a tour in which the payouts couldn't be honored and took over a year to finally pay out (if they are indeed paid in full), they are trying to cash in on someone elses format (TAR). It really is quite noble work the IPT is doing. lol, give me a f***ing break!

You're easy Freddie! Give you a free lunch and a pretty girl, and you're in heaven. It'll take a little more than that to convince me. Did you ask either player how much they were paid for that non match?

I'm convinced that pool players will never learn. At least most of them won't. There's an old saying thats appropriate here, "Trust, but verify".
The fact that this guy is getting the players to "donate" their services simply amazes me. All the past events of the last two years are like water under the bridge.

I seriously doubt if we will ever see another IPT tournament, only a series of exhibition matches. They're cheap, they're easy (or should be anyway) and it only requires two players. This IS their new business model for professional pool. TAR had to show them the way. :)

yep. Here is my prediction for what will happen in the coming months. See if it matches what you think. I foresee a few more "free" challenge matches, complete with sponsors and advertising commercials (to pay for the challenge matches), then the IPT will announce a grand format to the challenge matches. Maybe a bit like boxing where we see a title champion and contender. This will culminate with the subsequent matches going to PPV and the first one being a big match to decide the first champion, possibly Efren/Sigel as it was alluded to last night. Whatcha think? If it comes to fruition in this manner then I want to be known as CorvetteDamus from now on.

So if you walk up to a water drinking fountain, lean over to get a drink of some free, fresh cold water & get a mouth full of brown, rusty warm spew - Freddie would not be upset because, sheez, the water was free.

First class & pizza??? I think they call that an oxymoron - like military intelligence & jumbo shrimp. Besides the fact that TAR worked with an antiquated hotel to provide over 12 hours a day for 10 days of flawless streaming and the IPT couldn't do it first class for 2 hours without an immediate problem.

The whole point, which Freddie seems to miss since he was so honored to be one of the 50 invitees, was that this was a free internet match for all to view. That didn't happen. So the IPT failed. Period. They can try to blame some Californian internet provider - they can try to blame FedEx for not delivering on Sunday - they can try to blame someone for not bringing the check book. We have heard it before. Unfortunately, blind pool players listen with their eyes, not their ears.

Yep KT, Deno & his crew are the leaders of the new world of pool. Let us pray.

Enjoyed the match very much last night. When there were pauses & glitches in the stream I thought to myself . . . "Hey, its FREE" . . . So no big deal.

The scorekeeper girl was SuperFine! Good lord.

The only complaint I would have would be the chemistry between Sigel & Grady in the announcers booth. Seriously wanted to turn them off a few times but I rode it out. Grady is a little dry & Mike is a tad on the "know-it-all" side.

And a few more he left behind. :D

And they all get along? My wife is Filipina and she would cut my throat if she caught me with a girlfriend.

If I was going to make a suggestion it would be for the IPT to get a couple clip on microphones for the announcers. Those hand held mikes weren't getting it done. Grady was twice as loud as Sigel and when I turned the sound down to keep Grady from blowing out my speakers I couldn't hear Sigel. Clip the mike on the lapel and do a sound check.

Sound check, what an innovative idea. He probably hired the cheapest crew he could find to shoot this. Someone he hasn't stiffed yet.

Freddy, This post officially makes you an IPT whore! That piece of crap they put on the internet last night was so bad they had to come on the air after 2 hours to apologize!

Then they try to cover it up by making it sound like it was only a HICCUP (not my words, taken from the article on AZBILLIARDS this morning).

They BOUGHT you, man!
