My Thoughts on Earl and TAR 22

I watched the match and it was very uncomfortable for the majority. There are unsportsmanlike rules. Not sure why no one calls a foul in these instances. A few ball in hands or loss of games will shut put people in their place...

Dora,

This was not a tournament, it was a gambling match, Justin tried to explain this. The players make the rules so there where no unsportsmanlike rules to uphold...other than common sense. Since there was no common sense shown on Earl's part, Justin is saying he's done w/Earl. He no longer wants his name (and TAR's) associated w/the man!

That is the "foul" Justin is calling - a pretty stiff penalty. And, I agree with him.

if thats what you know, then who am i to disagree with "reports" by "someone". i saw the videos and it was mockery at the other persons expense. if mister strickland is cool with it then perhaps hes not beset by the mental problems everyone says. i just think hes got a bad temper and anger issues. then again , i dont know any of these people.bad temper doesnt make him in need of help. anything i say is just guesswork, like most the posters. i do find earl more entertaining and real than joe rogan though.i see lotsa people in pool with worse behavior than his. when you go pro or win some titles is it supposed to change your personality?? this i dont get.
outta here

You can disagree and offer a opinion like anyone else. Nothing wrong with that. I was just asking where this line of thinking came from. I have never seen, nor heard anything, that indicated that Joe Rogan being there was in any way unpleasant for Earl. As I said, everything points to everyone having a good time with Joe there, including Earl.

Earl catches crap from everyone about all the equipment he uses. He's even participated in laughing about the whole equipment thing, when others have wore headphones or arm weights. That video is good clean fun and if the worst someone said about me was that I wore a beekeeper's outfit, I'd be offended that that was all they came up with:)

In regards to your comment about Earl being more "real" then Joe, I would have to disagree. I see Earl handling his fame in a completely different manner then Joe does. I think we call can agree, Joe Rogan's fame factor is on a completely different scale then Earls' is. Joe is known by millions and millions of people with hit primetime TV shows and millions and millions of UFC fans all over the world that know who he is.

I think the criteria of someone being labelled as being "real" when their famous, requires them to stay grounded and be just a average Joe to their fans. Someone who acts just like a regular guy, even though he's famous. To me, Earl comes off as someone who is "above" all of his fans. He is constantly reminding everyone of who he is. He expects to be treated differently then anyone else because of who he is. He has that "I am entitled to be treated like a king" When dealing with fans, he treats them like crap and dismisses them as nobodies.

Joe, on the other hand, is just a regular guy, in spite of him being famous. He doesn't come off as someone who needs his ego stroked and is very friendly and accessible to his fans. He enjoys hanging out with us "regular folk" Look at this weekend as a example. He's got a hectic work schedule getting ready to host a prime time UFC fight being shown to millions and millions of fans all over the world and he is thrilled to death to come down to the TAR studio and watch some pool. Even gets in the booth for several hours. He doesn't come in with a "posse" of people with him, he doesn't get paid anything for his time there and anyone hearing his commentary, could hear that he was thrilled to death being there.

If that's not enough, how about this.... On Sat night, he's working the UFC Ultimate Fight Finale, broadcast to millions of people all over the world on a major tv network and he's constantly texting Justin to find out the score to this pool match. In the middle of this huge live event, his mind is on the score of the match.

Joe is very cool and very down to earth, and gives off no sense of superiority and no sense of entitlement because of who he is. Earl gives of the direct opposite. He gives off that people should be worshiping him, that they should be treating him like a king. And if you think because you're just Joe Shmoe, that you can come up to him and shake his hand, well he's got a message for you... F&*k off.

That's my opinion anyways, my opinion is worth no more than anyone else here.:) I try to keep it real myself.

Who knows what drives Earls emotions. Because thats just what
it is. He showed up and stayed the duration. Do you think he walks in intending to show his ass? Do you know what pressure he feels?
I can answer that for you. NO . Some deal with fame better than others.
Back off his ass. If he cant play on TAR....Who cares
He lost, SVB won and people are still talking about it. Mostly shit they know nothing about.Everyone who bought the stream knew Earl well enough to know what might happen,so.. Whats the big b1tch about it?
He has been under this pressure to perform his whole career and mostly
delivers.
I have talked with Earl many times and never told to f!@#$% off
I have big respect for TAR and other posters. But most of this sh1t is irrelevant to the problem.
Its just Earl bashing.

Well this is the difference between being a homeless bum and being a champion. The champion always has something that people want. Homeless bums get charity, champions get opportunities.

This weekend there was a donate to Earl button in the form of paying TAR for access to the match. All Earl had to do is show up and play and try to win. He was staked, he got an appearance fee, probably had the flight and hotel paid for as well. And he had a legitimate shot at winning.

Do you see any other American player getting staked to play Shane? So yeah, people want something from Earl and the do try to help him with opportunities to ply his trade despite the issues.

What are people supposed to do for Earl that they haven't already done?

People didn't do things for Earl because they are oh so charitable. They did it because they wanted to watch a match between two heavyweights or they wanted to make money off him. People were buying a product and if they are unhappy with the product, dont buy it again. Simple. We paid to watch a race to 75 between the worlds top players for 35 dollars. We got to watch 142 games. Thank you Earl and SVB and TAR.
Now bashing him, trying to play the "whats wrong with Earl?" game, talking about his medicinal transactions, saying he is breaking pool, and crying like he owes you something is too much.
I wont be too surprised to hear "we decided last time that we were never going to do this but heres a match between......"

Hey this is a bashing Earl thread,if your not here to bash Earl get back to the NPR forum.:p

J/K........Or am I?:confused::killingme:

Jimmy, let the boys read Dora some poetry..... They spend so much time on here that they have to occasionally work on their girl game....

I spent a few hours talking with Earl this weekend and gave Earl a ride after the first night when Joe was there and there are two things that I know for sure.

1. The only thing that bothered Earl about Joe's impersonation was his choice of words. Earl didn't want people to think that what Joe said were his thoughts. He didn't care about the anything else.

2. After meeting Joe, Earl thought he was a "good guy" and that Joe is the kind of person that could help to turn things around for pool.

As someone that was in the audience and around Earl outside of the match i do have a lot to say about this weekend, but i also don't want to beat this to death. I am going to wait till I return from vacation and put my thoughts together.

A brief comment by Earl on TAR Podcast #4 shows that Earl wasn't exactly thrilled with Joe's video (go to 30:50): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoCKGrlZHvg

I must have been concentrating on something else at the time, because I know I saw that whole interview live.

He didn't seem too bent out of shape about it... he seemed more concerned that Joe didn't get his phrase or what he meant, exactly right.

for a guy that seems to have 200-1000 things that he is angry about and feels unjust, that incident is probably somewhere in the bottom 20%. I still stand by my opinion that having Joe there, had zero % to do with how Earl was going to act.

Whatever though... I'm about Earled out. Good luck to him.

I'm looking forward to checking out Oscar's game since the last time I saw him play with John Morra and I've never had a long look at Raj's game, so I'm really excited about getting another pool fix this weekend.

TAR 23 Baby!!!

When Raj is "on" his game, he's pretty darn masterful and fun to watch. OD on the other hand, is just a "steady-rollin'-man".

It ought to be a fun match to watch/sweat. I hope for TAR's sake it does well viewer-wise. The future of televised pool depends on matches such as this one. You can't just show the best two or three players in the world everytime you put on a telecast!!!

Right you are. Every one of these broadcasts should be looked at, as a great opportunity to..

A: Entertain you with championship pool. There's not a lot that separates top players. It's not like you're not going to see racks run.

B. It gives you a chance to take a look at one or 2 players, that maybe you've never seen before in depth. I'm not talking about watching them play in a tournament, but this is a gambling match. There's 10 grand of the other guys money that can be won. It allows you to really get a good look at someone's game. It may help you in the future, whether it's betting on that player, or betting on the guy that's playing him.

C. You can really get into checking out these guys that are not in the top 5% as far as the totem pole goes. Try to find out what that player is good at, what are they great at, what are the poor at? How do they handle rolls, or pressure when it gets late in the game.

D. You can study their stroke, their bridge, their follow thru, their stance, how they play over balls, how to they deal with awkward bridges. You can study their break

E. The commentators.... It doesn't matter whether it's the same commentators or different ones... you always get to hear fresh commentary. Fresh stories, fresh insights.

ahhh... hell, just go there, order it up when the links are up.. be a pool junkie like me:D You owe it to yourself to have some great pool at your fingertips. Where is this pool you ask? it's at the TAR website:)

missing the old earl

After watching tar 22 i was left with a sad feeling for all involved, earl included. When i watch matches from earl from 10 years ago or so he is so composed and focused. The earl of today is mentally broken and has to blame everything but his on actions for why he played bad. It seems as though earl has developed certain defense mechanisms when dealing with pressure and it is not pretty at all. Im not that familiar with mental illness but maybe he has some clinical problems that have gotten much worse overtime. I watched a round robin tournament that was held in the phillipinnes around 2000 that had efren, busta, archer, and earl. Earl ran through them and was on a completely different level. Efren looked like someone just shot his dog after earl beat him two sets in a row to 15 by healthy margins. That talent is still there but he just can't deal with the emotions. I congradulate shane he is only going to get better but it would be a good idea not to play earl again unless earl can prove he has gotten some help and can play with some sportsmanship and give it his best game. Otherwise it isn't fair to shane, to earl, to TAR, or to the fans that want to watch to great players go at it.

if respect is all that, why have rogan as a commentator? thats not respect towards one of the players.

There is nothing disrespectful of that, Rogan is a HUGE Earl fan and his impression was pretty light hearted. Want to see what someone who REALLY does not like Earl and disrespects him sounds like on commentary? Watch an Earl Match with Shawn Putnam commentating. Hell there are moments when Justin talks of "going out and grabbing Earl by the back of the neck" where I kinda think to myself while listening to the commentary "umm, that is going a little far, lets keep the commentating a little more on the game and less on physical violence against a player". Joe never said a peep about physically assulting Earl, he never went off on how terrible a human being he is and how he should be barred from the entire game of pool like Shawn Putnam likes to blather on about while commentating.

Rogan never said anything against Earl in the entire time he commentated from what I heard and I watched the whole match. He was the best commentator of the match by far. All of the other commentators flat out got on my nerves, from begging for sponsership "and that's all I have to say about that.... until 5 minutes from now when I will start to rant about it again" to miscalling things only to say "well it is the monitor that makes it hard to see" You mean as compared to the computer screens we are watching the match on that show clearly that the ball goes?

Pool would be so lucky to have Rogan level commentation on a regular basis, for his level of play and experience in the game he actually CALLS the game better then over 90% of the announcers this game has ever had.

I can't believe all the people that think Joe Rogan was disrespectful to Earl...Joe is a stand up comedian too that's what they do is impersonate people....Have you heard some of the stand up's impersonate other celebrities like Mike Tyson...good thing Mike can take a joke or there would be alot of earless comedians...I found it funny as many others...I didn't see any lines that were crossed & it was all done in fun & jest...If Earl had a problem with that then it's his problem not the rest of the worlds.
