What is the best way for this lathe to hold the butt sleeve? Buy a small chuck and mount it on the back side:confused: ? Or some kind of steady rest:confused: ?

Delrin Collets, Low cost

Contact Billy Webb on this forum, his username is Spiderweb he has been using a Clausing Lathe for many years. I am certain he could help you with your questions. Tell him I refered you!!

How big is that hole?
Looks like you have to chuck up and spur center then turn down between centers.
Once diam. is manageable, chuck it up.

I find rear chucks to be a waste of time & money. Of course you need to center the work in the spindle but there are much easier, quicker & cheaper ways to do this.

Did this lathe originally have a collet closer set-up? If so, some of it's remaining components may be restricting the usable id. of the spindle. You want at least 1 3/8" unrestricted through the spindle.

A rear chuck is a must! i have 4 lathes every one has a rear chuck. if you are looking for accuracy you need one. Home made collars are so so??? get a rear chuck and zero it in just like your front chuck.

what if the spindle hole is too long, then you have to use the so so collets.

sorry i don't think there is anything so so about the delrin collets or bushings.i use them everyday and they too are dead nuts.

you just ned to make some bushings out of delrin that are the slightly smaller OD than the spindle bore and will slide on to and tighten on your work.

I don't have a rear chuck as Logan is not designed for it.
If the piece is too short to reach the rear chuck, you can chuck up a straight rod with a live center at the front.

delrin bushing best way to do? I do notice that spindle through hole is long. I will take measure after install my new 6 jaws chuch later this week.

1.370" OD bushings beat any rear chuck. If the work piece is less than about 27" long it wouldn't reach the rear chuck and you would need the collets anyways.

This lathe had a collet closer at some time.

i like them the best.i ahev some for the rear of my lathe, btu i still need to have some made for the middle.often i am working on 12" or so pieces and they are nice to have.i think you wantt to taper the inside about a degree.

looks like you have 1.38" spindle hole which is a good size, just make you rounds 1.38" and the spindle bore will hold them straight.you should have no trouble getting the to rune true.

Looks like you could mount a 4 jaw scroll chuck on the back , should find a backplate to match ... Your spindle bore looks rough so delrin collets might not get you the tolerances you want to get zero runout ...
