Need help finding a custom cue maker

Hey guys,

I am interested in possibly getting a custom cue made for myself. One thing that sorta bugs me about "some" Custom cues is that they are pre-designed and while they are custom made they are not truly custom one of a kind or my own design.

So I'd like to find a custom cue maker who is willing to make a cue for me from my own design (or my take my idea and maybe spice it up a bit). Could anyone recommend a few cue makers who might be willing to do this?

Find a cuemaker you may be interested in that is local to you and communicate your wishes. PDF Paul Drexler does great work and will
build almost anything you desire!

It might help if you clarified if your own design is related to colors, woods and artistic stuff or more related to construction details and functional details which affect playability. IMO, albeit very limited, I think you should search long and hard for a guy with a good playability rep and has made something similar to your desired cue.

I can imagine it is easier to ask for your favorite tip and tip diameter vs. Asking a guy to work with materials he has never used or request some self originated way of splicing the butt sleeve to the handle.

Many of our very talented cue makers will build a cue as per the wishes of the customer but there are, however, limitations.
Be aware that a cue maker will probably not alter the dimensions of his cues because his tooling is set up for the size he is accustomed to making. Length being the possible exception. Decoration, such as inlays, inlay material, and choices of wood are where the customer can have the greatest input but remember this. At some point you may want sell or trade it. A design that is really cool to you may not be that appealling to anyone else.

You might want check with Richard Black in Houston. He has built cues out of all sorts of materials, is very creative and has built all sorts of unusual and unique cues. There is a page on his website showing a good collection of his work.

cue building

Most of the cuemakers will discuss your ideas and try to work with you. Find one who will listen well, though. Many will let you talk and build what they want to build. Look for design elements you want and have them clearly displayed for the cue builder. Pictures or drawings are worth more than words.

I welcome you to visit my website and if there is some interest let me know if I can help you. I refuse to make two of anything (that's production). We can discuss your ideas and maybe go from there.

I look forward to your project.

AZB Member . . .

Doug Patrick here in the forums is a good choice . . . exceptional playing cues at very reasonable prices . . . I'd recommend him highly.

Ryan Theewen (Rat Cues) sells via Mueller's Billiards is another good one . . .

Josey Cues are awesome players as well . . .

There's probably at least 50 builders who hang out right here who do great work. Best thing would be to reach out to friends and dealers and try everything you can FIRST. Find out what you like and don't like - tapers, weight, feel (stiff hit, soft hit, etc.), pin, ferrules, tip, tip size (dia), woods, wrap/no wrap etc. - and start making out the spec's. Browse the for sale section of the forums - you'll get lots of ideas there and the spec's you need to detail are typically listed for every cue. There are some beauties and you'll probably learn a lot about what to budget. I'd post your wants and needs and expect you'll get a lot of offers from the talented craftsmen we have within the AZB community.

As for me, I base 90% of ordering a custom based on playability . . . looks and "investment quality" are nice to haves but way down on my priority list. I buy cues to play with, and most of the time they don't go into great environments (pool halls, bars etc.). I don't leave 'em in a case and just take 'em out to stare at. I figure they'll have some battle scars, or some idiot will bump into it or try to steal it, but the cue will be built and feel the way I want. And that's the true difference from a "production" cue - feel is subjective, but with looks you can truly "have it your way".

John Parker of Auerbach Custom Cues, in Tulsa OK does just that. Used Auerbach Cues are hard to find, because folks keep them. John is a Master Craftsman & his work is warranted. His prices are not extravagant & you will get a Certificate of Authenticity that tells about the cue & it's value. You can call John at 918-381-9364 & talk with him about a cue. He will make a drawing, so you will get to see what the final product will look like.

dick neighbors, cincy, oh. posts on here as rhncue good man, good work, fair price.

Yeah ....

You left off the most important fact for 'this custom cue'. What are you willing to pay for it???????? If you say 500 dollars, that greatly limits the cuemakers and the design. If you say 3,000 dollars then skads of cuemakers will be willing to make you a 'as you say' cue per your specs.

The unspoken fact is you have to pay at least a 1,000 to get any cue with an artistic flair to it in the inlays, etc.. 1,500 to 1,800 will get you a pretty nice cue that plays good and looks good too with some nice wood to it.
(you can find these cues used for 1,100 to 1,300 usually if in the second hand market).

Just me, but I would want the cuemaker located not far from where I live, but I guess if the cuemaker has a computer with email, you could correspond pretty regularly about the details.

You might check out a resource I put up on my blog with 23 pieces of information about 80 custom cuemakers. There's also a map indicating where they're located. The page may load a little slowly (I'm working on that) but if you're patient I think you'll be pleased.

Unlike the recommendations you've gotten from the other posters, I don't know these cuemakers nor can I vouch for them personally. This data was compiled based only on what the cuemakers themselves provided. It can make for an interesting start to find someone, though.

Check out Mark Bear he's known for his full splice cues.

Another I can recommend is Jim Buss

Lee Peppers, LPCustomcues.com. Built mine to my specs, full splice, very reasonable. He is a member here.

Lots of great suggestions so far.

I see that you are in NYC. Not too far from Valley Forge. If you have the chance get to Valley Forge next month for the Super Billiards Expo. There will be dozens of the best cuemakers in the world present and also dozens of dealers with cues from just about any cuemaker past and present.

See them all up close and personal and even try a few (or a few dozen) out on a pool table. Once you get an idea what you like talk to a cue maker in person and start them building your cue.

The only cuemakers I have personal experience working with are Russ Espiritu, Steve Klein and Tim Scruggs. I recommend all three of them without reservation as great to work with (though I don't believe Tim is taking new orders).

Good luck and be careful...it can be addictive!

you also could contact DBK AZ member, he is a Russian cuemaker. Search the Cues section for his cues reviews and for his contact info.

Jerry Rauenzahn

I would recommend Jerry Rauenzahn. A very respected cue maker here on AZ Billiards. You can get a custom cue...pick out your original design for a very reasonable price. He is now making full splice cues for around $1,400 hundred with 2 shafts.
