New Hollywood pool movie trailer released (actually really good)

Does anyone know what's happened to the 9-Ball movie with Jennifer Baretta and Jeanette Lee? Or was it some parody all along?

Did we just watch the same clip? That movie has every pool cliche and even has some drug use thrown in. Should make a parent really happy their kid wants to learn to play pool. Lets just hope no city commissioner or mayor who is voting the next day on a variance allowing a pool room in their town sees it. Crap like this movie has real world consequences on the sport and they often are not good. Of course that is just my opinion.

Based on this it sounds like you don't think any of the popular movies featuring pool should have ever been made. They all have some form of drinking, drug use, gambling, and violence. That is what makes them dramas. There is a reason that 95% of the poker games in Rounders happen outside of a casino. Seedier locations and sketchy people equals higher drama. These are adult movies made for adults and I doubt that they have any bearing on a city commissioner or a mayor making any decisions.

What does affect a city commissioner or mayor are pool halls already open that are a thorn in their side or the side of someone they know who also holds office. They don't want the hassle of having the police repeatedly called to any business. If you had a city that had nothing but pool halls in it and they were all well run, making money and crime free you would have a happy mayor and city commissioner.

Back to the movie, I'm looking forward to it. It doesn't look like it will be winning any academy awards but I'm always excited to see any movie that features pool.

Not necessarily. A cliche is a cliche because it has been done so many times before. The first couple of times wouldn't really qualify. Going by the trailer this film could have been called "The Color of Poolhall Junkie Money". Then it could have been seen as a parody and it would probably have been more respectable in this light!

Obviously none of us have seen the film, but unless it's just a misleading trailer it looks like it will be another retelling of the same old story. I don't think pool fans need to get behind every project like this, especially if their real feelings are that it is cheesy, unoriginal or even harmful to the image of the game. Personally I don't think Ride the 9 will do any damage to the game, or any good. Maybe some people will see it and decide to take up pool, but does anyone really care if those wannabe poolhall-posers ever hit a ball?

I think some people have a similar feeling about this but feel like they have to say something good about the film anyway. I can just about understand where they're coming from, but I don't agree at all. Most new films that are made are not great films. Ride the 9 looks like fitting into this category. I don't see any problem with saying this. If the positive view is welcome in the thread then there has to be room for the other side, too. The more some people big it up, the more others will feel the need to respond. The trailer looked to me like an MTV reality show version of every pool movie ever made. Sorry folks, but I can't get behind that.

I hope this movie is better than shooting gallery. I got 20 minutes in to Shooting Gallery and had to shut it down. Turn the River was awful as well, I only made it 15 minutes in to turn the river.

In these movies there seems to be an inordinate number of masse shots, bank shooting and shots with a ton of power.

I wonder what florians role is in this movie. Is he the bad guy ringer?

That actually looks like it has a whole lot of potential. A whole lot better then that other movie that was posted about a month ago with the hooke... err "hustler" chick.

Production values look like they could be good and some decent acting. The pool shots were also fairly decent although a little too "set up". The shots in the Color of Money that Amos plays on Eddie are the type of shots that are truly sick because while they were set up they were very subtle and might actually come up in play but only the best will see them and shoot then and only the best such as Eddie would see the shot as more then simple luck.

Maybe he plays a Obi Wan Kenobi-like character who trains the main protagonist in a montage with 80s rock music in the background.

E-mailed

I e-mailed and have been talking to Jordan Marder all day. I told him about the negative image that the trailer shows, and he informed me of what the actual movie is about. I told him from the trailer it didn't showcase the actual movie, based on the story line that he told me.

So they are considering re-doing the trailer to show the whole story...

Below is his last e-mail to me, in part... Because I discussed with him about showing off the negative side of pool, which only confirms the general public's view of the pool community.

I challenge anyone to show case the real professional players, who don't act like jerk offs, who don't do drugs, and get involved in illegal activity.

Gambling is fine, when it's done right, like with TAR, that is the best way to gamble. Post up, and play. No air barrels, no shady crap, just two players putting up some cash and playing HARD. That's pool, that's what should be showcased. Not the shitty little road player who walks in to a pool room, ask for the 7-8, takes some idiots money, and leaves. When in reality he could give them guy the 6 and beat him 7-0. That kind of pool doesn't need to be shown, it's been done before. And that type of behavior is what has been detrimental to pool.

BUT I will say from Jordan's first e-mail explaining the story line, this won't be shown, this will actually be a POSITIVE MOVIE! I am very excited to see it. I think it could do some good for the community, because it is actually a positive movie.

Lastly I will send Jordan the link for this forum and invite him to join this discussion about his movie. I am sure will will answer everyones questions, and I know he is open to all of your questions.

Michael,

We would love to discuss the involvement of our trailer in a presentation you might have. Let me discuss it with my partners and see what they have to say and I'll get back to you:) I understand what your concerns are. Our trailer did not.... *part omitted* In the end, this story is about a very gifted player, who needs to come to terms with his past and his talent, in order to overcome the odds legitimately with a wisdom of the game. In our film we bring to light the difficulty of surviving in a game of long hours and intense concentration, highlighting the need for a venue wherein these players can be showcased and earn what they deserve. thank you for your thoughts. talk soon.

You're entitled to your opinion.

However this thread is supposed to be about the release of pool-related movie. If you really want to beat a dead horse about pools so-called 'negative image', then please do so in one of the other countless threads on the topic (not intended to sound rude).

I'd much rather discuss the movie itself, such as the people who worked on it, its release date, and how JoayA and Florian are enjoying their new-found fame. :D

You need a magnifying glass and a pause button to spot JoeyA but HEY, I made the final cut. :D:D

I did spot Florian first. As usual, making a super cool shot.... I had to get a Facebook shout from someone to know I made the final cut otherwise I was just dreaming about things to come. :D

I met the actors and they are a solid group for sure but I like the way the film came out in some of the scenes. The product looks even better than the set looked. I believe the production crew has some excellent talent.

Now that Buffalo Billiards has EXPANDED, they can come back and shoot some more film. :yeah::yeah:

Roll on "Ride the 9"!

Huh???....so which one is JoeyA???

Hey, hey, if you can't recognize the star, you need to get that kind of information via PM........ j/k............ Get a magnifying glass and a pause button ready.............

Yes, I did read your other posts on this thread. I have read every post on this thread. I thought you would get the gist of my point with what I wrote. I apologize if it was too vague for you, I will be more specific. There was drug use in TCoM. Vincent was shown drinking shots and cheating people out of money. There is no 'clean' pool movie that is a drama. It is as simple as that. It is the lack of 'clean' that largely makes it dramatic.

I understand you talked to one person who formed an opinion of what a pool hall is based on tv and movies and it is a negative opinion. One person is a pretty small sample size with which to make a generalization. If this person actually holds an office I would actively work to get them out of it. Anyone who thinks that they are knowledgable about something in real life because they saw something about it in a movie or tv show should not be making any decisions affecting the public. Did you ask him if he also believes that every bar has a fat guy named Norm and a postal carrier hanging out 12 hours a day? There are morons everywhere and you are not going to change that by having movies only show pool in a positive, wholesome environment. This is a movie. It is make believe. There are plenty of people who like dramas and like gritty material so why be negative about something that is entertainment for adults?

To the gentleman who thought I was arguing the trailer wasn't full of cliches, that wasn't what I was trying to say. It obviously is full of them as basically every pool movie is. Same thing with poker movies. It always comes down to a big dramatic showdown where a seemingly unbeatable hand gets beat by a straight/royal flush.

The training montage with the music is an essential component of any sports or fighting movie. Have the main character where a sweat band, tube socks pulled up to his knees set to "Eye of the Tiger." For the purposes of this movie you would have to have shots of the protagonist snorting lines of coke off of the stomach of a hot chick throughout the montage. Can't wait to see this movie.

I didn't think you were arguing that the trailer was not full of cliches, I was disagreeing with your point that if you think of these ideas as cliches now you must think that all of the previous films should never have been made. A cliche is not a cliche first time out, it becomes one after it's repeated over and over again. My point is...why repeat it one more time? Again, I obviously haven't seen the film yet but if it adds nothing new, what's the point?

Have you ever hung out with any of the worlds top players? Or know much about their backgrounds? A lot of these guys have been in jail for some pretty shady stuff. On top of that, it's pretty much customary to get out of control at the bar, not just after an event, but each night during it.

I'm not talking about one bad apple here either. I could riddle off ten names of the best players in the world within a single minute that clearly do not match how you clearly envision 'professional pool'.

It would require a completely fictitious and unrealistic representation of pool to make a movie without anything shady in it. :p

While I know how much you enjoy playing a round of soggy crackers as you opine about pool in your "this will be huge for pool" circle jerk, I'd much rather save my shiny comments for things that will actually have an impact.

Oh wait, I forgot to include the obligatory pidgin language. Let me see... lol, u r rite kewl dood. I r stupood and dont no nuthin bout pool or the film biz. I jst got pwned.

You're posting right now, and clearly you're not having much of an 'impact'. Well, unless you consider inappropriately bringing 'circle jerks' into the conversation as some sort of valid contribution.

Seriously, grow up man. The only person who said this movie would be huge for pool is you. And you've said it sarcastically twice now.

Hmmmm....I apparently made my point horribly. Not the first time nor the last I'm sure. I hear what you are saying and I guess I'll leave it at that. :)

Regarding the 'what's the point?' my best guess is that the director and writers feel it will add something new to the genre or is at least a story worth telling. Whether or not it actually is has yet to be seen but here is to hoping it does. Any movie that revolves around pool or poker always has me hoping for the best.

Too funny.

I agree, but the face needs to be changed. There are some top players who yes, may have shady backgrounds, and I will not nor should anyone mention names. I have "hung" out with many of the top players, been to their houses, heard their stories. Big deal, so have you. Doesn’t mean you know anything anymore than anyone else does. I am certainly not bragging about it either.

We need to change that face, show off the players that play tournaments, that are stand up guys, who don't do drugs and don't get involved with illegal activity.

Yes, some of the top guys have been to prison/jail. Have been arrested and convicted of illegal activity, however, are they doing that now? Have they returned to their past? No, they play pool and stay away from trouble. Well then 3-4 I am thinking of and refering to.

If we don't showcase the professionals who are stand up guys, then we will ultimately fail. Doesn’t matter how many "fancy" videos we make, or how many tee shirts we sell, or how many cues are sold. No matter what without changing the FACE of professional pool, we will ultimately stay in this slump. Broke, no money, playing for pennies, only to get a check that is POST dated. Real nice.

Macguy,
Do you have any idea what movie goers want to see? Have you paid any attention to what's on television today.

While I love Ralf Souquet to death and he is one of my favorite players, I don't think anyone's going to a movie to pay ten bucks to watch him run ball after ball and be the perfect gentleman.

Me, I can't wait for this season's True Blood. This is the kind of sick stuff that people like these days. I liked the comic books when I was a kid, you know the fantasy stuff, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern etc....

This is the MOVIE BUSINESS we're talking about, not some namby pamby PTA meeting where we can BS ourselves about what a nice society our children are growing up in and how we are making our mark as to what kind of world our children are going to grow up in. It's FANTASY, with all of the excitement of the actual pool world that we already live in. Want to make a positive statement about pool, go make a documentary. Want to make a few million dollars? Go make an exciting fantasy filled pool movie like "Ride the 9".

People make movies to make money, not to shape the world.
