New Hollywood pool movie trailer released (actually really good)

"It is supposed to be about"?
This is a discussion board and my comments were directly related to the link you posted. Telling me to post to another thread because you don't agree with me was yes, rude. The thing is, you probably do agree with me and I know where you are coming from, we all would like to see a great pool movie. I have a feeling though from what they choose to use in the trailer this "straight to video effort" is most likely not it. We can only hope it is something better then the clip. Pool itself can't carry any movie it is just the backdrop to the another story and it's portrayal often very bad, to fit a stereotype.

It has nothing to do with the fact that I don't agree with you. It has to do with the fact that, like so many others, I am tired of people belittling others efforts with pesimism and criticism. Nothing done in pool is ever going to be perfect. There is always going to be a difference of opinion on image, rules, not enough funding, etc. I accept this, and agree to support people's efforts, even though they are not perfectly to my liking. Its a compromise.

This movie is the result of a lot of money and effort, and some of my friends and fellow forum members are in it. So rather than beat a dead horse and go on a huge tangent about pool's bad image, how about we just accept that this movie is going to be released, and choose to be supportive?

Looked pretty good to me, I'd watch it.

I don't understand the notion that some people have that movie companies "owe" the billiard industry a positive movie so the game can be "saved".

Or conversely, they shouldn't make movies that portray billiards negatively because some city alderman may see it......

I think they are probably more concerned about saving their own investment......

No stars + no distribution + a director, writer and production team who have never done anything of note = $1.99 bin at Wal-Mart (assuming it ever gets completed).

Maybe this movie should be nicknamed "the Jesus Christ of pool" since it will clearly be the savior of the billiards industry.

Oh, and just because one of the producers has the same last name as the guy who directed Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens, doesn't mean they're actually related.

....seriously? People never cease to amaze me. Why even post if you have nothing good to say?

Clearly this movie isn't going to hit theaters. Anyone who watches it will have to go out of their way to find it.

Also, since when does a movie have to be made by a colossal studio to be entertaining? Based on your logic, Transformers 2 must have been a good movie since it was made by an acclaimed director. lol

Did we just watch the same clip? That movie has every pool cliche and even has some drug use thrown in. Should make a parent really happy their kid wants to learn to play pool. Lets just hope no city commissioner or mayor who is voting the next day on a variance allowing a pool room in their town sees it. Crap like this movie has real world consequences on the sport and they often are not good. Of course that is just my opinion.

lol...so did it NOT get the pool scene down accurately?

i'll check it out...it will probably be a straight to dvd movie...but i'll check it out

It looks like a great movie and I will look forward to watching/buying it when it comes out.

Look at it this way. Every movie that comes out these days, whether it be a comedy, drama, mystery etc, has people getting their heads blown off, drugs, gratuitous sex in it. Its not going to go away. They make movies that people are going to watch.

Not trying to be a dick Mac, but if Disney Pictures ever decides to make a
Pool movie starring the Jungle Book characters versus Winnie the Pooh characters called the Pooh Tournament, it will be good for the kids but this is what sells these days.

I can't wait to see this one. People are not going to look down on pool just because it includes all the fun things in life.
Seriously, if anything from what I've seen in the trailer, people will be going to the pool halls to get try and live vicariously thru this movie just like they did after the COM.

Doing rails off of the rails. Boinking girls on the rails. I'm in.

Yes you make a good point. Drug use and abuse is abound in the NFL and the NBA, MLB. It doesn't seem to keep millions of kids from watching , spending money and playing those games. I don't think you should sugar coat the world for the kids. They already get a trophy for just showing up whether they play or win in many cases. As you said though, just my opinion :)

It will be interesting to see if it even makes theaters or goes straight to DVD.

I really think it might be a decent movie and I have watched them all so we shall see. We will never see another like The Hustler, the Color of Money was kind of cheesy but was okay and Pool Hall Junkies was entertaining to my non pool playing friends so that was good and is young and hip for those college kids looking to get into pool. They all have gambling involved and pool/gambling go hand in hand.

I have seen some total pool movie flops as have many of you, watch Stickmen which is an British pool movie and is terrible but perhaps entertaining to the non die hards. Shooting Gallery was not well done either and came out a couple years back, after PHJ. They all have gambling and the dark side shown and somewhat glamorized. I would like to see a movie about Willie Mosconi made with a little color of maybe him and Fats playing and Greenleaf on the road with him doing exhibitions but who would want to watch that besides us diehards?

IMO the best pool movie will be made about Jack Cooney and his wife Barbara. Get 2 attractive young Hollywood stars and make it happen, it would be interesting and entertaining but the biggest thing is to make it appeal to main stream America, the Hustler was popular not just because pool was more popular then but because it was a love story. You need to get something couple will go and watch together, pool would be in the movie but the relationship of the characters is the most important ingredient to the success into the mainstream.

I wish this film success and if it gets someone to put together a cue and start up the game then great. I do hope that its for the right reasons instead of the wrong. The hustling road life is not all its cracked up to be and not so romantic.

Saw Jack and Barbara lay it down over an entire Summer in STL. When they arrrived, they parked 2 blocks away from the pool hall. Drove a big white Lincoln with CA plates. Jack was on the stall for a month before he showed any speed. He said he had relatives in the area. Truth be known, Ronnie Allen had gone off to a local a few months earlier and Jack knew about it.

There was a lot of backer money in town at the time and they were after it. Funny that we all knew it was Cooney, but he just seemed like an old faded hustler. Nobody was scared about matching up with him. He played several locals and just could not seem to run the balls very well.

Jack lost more than he won over the course of the next 3 weeks. He showed some "weak" gamble in the 1 pocket games he made and probably lost 65% of his matchups. I would guess his average loss was around $200 per session.

He just layed back and waited for the right situation to get the money. His patience paid off in a 27k score in August. We all knew he could play, but it was still a shock to see him run 8 and out over and over for the case money.

The trailer had a bunch of shots that most pool players really don't care about. The storyline is pretty out there, I'll give them that...but didn't that prince junior dude do a movie just like this one? He couldn't play a lick.

The hero, has a pregnant wife, is out hustling pool, doing dope, screwing bit$h3s, getting thrown in the trunk of a car, telling kids to follow their dreams and drop out of school....100$ bills being tossed around. I kinda wanna watch it now.

Interesting pool movie. Being that the majority of AzBilliards members are pool aficionados, our take on a pool movie can be quite different than mainstream America. What we are looking for in a movie to entertain us is not the same as those who know nothing about pool.

With that said, I did like the teaser and look forward to seeing the movie in its entirety.

Initially, what *may* have been an attraction for The Hustler and The Color of Money is the star quality of known actors like Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason, and Tom Cruise. If these two movies had unknown actors cast in the major roles, it would be interesting to see if they would have been as popular. The story lines were okay, but it is the complement of the actors and director's vision that makes a movie successful.

I used to believe the motto of "build it and they will come," but I am learning that some things are just not everybody else's cup of tea, no matter how cool I think it might be.

A Chinese man wanted to build the world's largest mall, twice the size of the one in Minnesota, and he actually succeeded. Here's what happened: World's Largest Shopping Mall.

I have -- had -- passion for pool. If I could figure out a way to make other people *feel* the same passion, I would be successful in putting pool on the map.

I will be very interested in how this movie fares in the coming months. Thanks for the thread! :)

Yippee!!!!!

You go, movie, you go!! May the producers get rich and pool, too.

The best pool movies ever made were riddled with cliche, and yet they still *drastically* helped increase the popularity of the sport. It's undeniable.

This is the first quality pool production in nearly a decade. I prefer to stay optimistic and supportive. Cliche or not, I look forward to seeing this.

I agree with you 100%. I'm basically an optimist and I'm looking forward to this movie's release. Initially, "Casablanca" was considered to be just another B movie but something clicked and it turned out to be a classic.
