New "Juma" ferrule material review...

Well I have received my Juma samples & as promised I'll give a quick review. This is the stuff Markus from Eurowest had a hand in and is sold by Atlas. First let me say this material is very close to Elforyn. The difference being that the Juma has a solid ivory color and does not have the "real" ivory look as of the Elforyn. The finished look is similar to the very early original Meucci ferrules. Its cuts/machines on the softish side about the same as Elforyn and polishes nicely & easily to a perfect shine that seems to be very chalk resistant. I've tried it both uncapped & capped and the "hit" is very good...a tad on the softer side without the old LBM "ping". Markus called it a "Micarta" replacement...and though I'm sure to catch heat for this....thats the best way to describe it. It hits almost exactly like the old yellow Micarta....a very lively "hit" and quiet without any ping or tink sounds. If you like the loud/hard hit of the old LBM...then this probably isn't the material for you. If you love the old yellow Micarta hit.....then this is as close to it as you can get. The material is also on the light side so it'll be much more "low deflection" than other heavier materials. Everyone knows...keeping the front end of a shaft light is a big key to low deflection. As for durabiltiy...I can't comment...yet. I will say the material is NOT a linen base & seems to be very close to the Elforyn as far as construction. I have used lots of Elforyn in tha past year....capped & uncapped...and have not had a single one come back for any issue what so ever...so I'll predict that the durability will be fine. I would like to add that this is a very clean material...absolutely no trash or pits. If you could imagine the Tiger Saber T material....in a nice solid ivory color then thats a good way to desribe it as well. Well I saved the best part for last...THE PRICE. This is what a lot of you will love. Juma is 1/2 the price of the Elforyn. I believe that Atlas offers 2ft sections for about $25.:)

It sounds like the MPI ROD that Atlas no longer carries...JER

Similar but no. The MPI was a very soft plastic that would melt easily and machined into strings. The Juma machines much more like Elforyn, Saber T, Micarta. I'm pretty sure that it will not melt into flat spots from breaking as the MPI would easily do as well. At basically $1 per ferrule in rod form...its not too expensive to give it a try. I remember you liked the MPI...so I'd be shocked if you didn't like the Juma....kind of like an improved version.;)

Kevin,

You mentioned that it was light weight, what is the specific gravity of this material?

Royce Bunnell

Well when I drop it out the window at the same time with an Ivorine4 ferrule the Iv4 reaches the ground much sooner...LOL!:D
Seriously your question would be much better directed to Markus at Eurowest as he'll have the specifics. I know in my quick informal testing it was the lightest of several ferrules I weighed...all having 5/16 through holes.

Kevin,

The density would be quite easy for you to calculate if you had the time. Just take a piece of known dimensions (and calculate that volume) and weigh it. density = mass / volume.

Royce asked for the specific gravity but that's really just the density relative to the density of water.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking for a ferrule material that's light but with a medium hit. I felt Titan was/is too soft. But I don't have many reference points here. I haven't been into it very long and I'm sure I don't know what ferrule types were on the various cues I've played with other than Titan. So understanding that I don't have any good past reference points, I'll ask a question that you may have actually answered already in the initial post. Would you say the hit of the Juma material is a medium hardness?

Also, what kind of tip is that in the picture? And what's the black line? Epoxy? A very thin pad? Nice looking work by the way.

Yes, I'd say compared to the harder hitting linen based ferrules the Juma has a much more medium hit. Not "too" soft like ABS or PVC. The tip is a standard LePro & the black line you see is simply the dark Gorilla glue I used to adhere the tip. The Gorilla glue foams and dries as yellow but will still leave that appearance due to it soaking into the tip. The new white Gorilla glue may be just the ticket...I know Joey LOVES it!:)

It was a pleasure meeting you as well Markus. I loved seeing the Elforyn cues in person. I must say.....out of all the booths there & all of the people I met....yourself & the gentlemen at the Atlas booth were very easily the nicest of the bunch. The guys at Atlas really went out of there way to make sure I was loaded with info, happy with service, and even loaded me up with some product samples. After I got home I checked the new Elforyn ferrule rod compared to my old original rod. The new stuff had much more the look of real ivory and also seemed quite a bit harder too. Lets just say I'm very happy & I definately look forward to seeing you next year. The Vegas show always is more fun.:D

i got some juma from atlas last week havent used it yet but i cant wait to. i just feel like i cheated if i dont use real ivory. only the best. hopefully someone wants non ivory soon.

While you are installing the Juma & then hitting with it....wipe the ivory out of your brain & think "old yellow Micarta". The Juma is a very close Micarta copy. If only it was a bit more yellow....:)

yeah.. but without the cracking etc to it. Regardless if they were capped or uncapped. This won't happen with JUMA unless someone would smack them down to a a concrete surface with warp speed.
