New "Juma" ferrule material review...

As usual we have two details about one item........

KV is telling us to think yelllow micarta......
Atlas says it plays or feels like ivory on their web page.......I can't remember which it was exactly but nothing like what KV is saying.

Ivory and yellow micarta are at different ends of the spectrum in my book.

I would have a tendenency to have to lean toward what Kevin is saying because I know he at least works with the material and shoots pool.
I don't think the people at Atlas do either..........just throw some phrase up on the website and they will buy it because we say so?
It's no secret........I really don't care for Atlas and their extremely overpriced items. It seems ...Because they think they have the corner on the market they gouge us and have little to no information or experience with most of the products they handle. Oh sure they're nice and all friendly when you call up and offer to send some money their way but I always feel like I got my pants pulled down every time I deal with them.
Will I still buy from them........yes, little as possible.
After they read this they may not want to sell to me anymore though!

the material will be available in rod form and sheets. Juma already is there as ferrule rods and sheets. The sheets are 300*200*3,5 mm or 300*200*5 mm.

kv i know what i am about to say is blasphemy but i hate yellow micatra bc its yellow. never want that on my cue. id rather the cue play worse with a white ferrule. im nuts about my tip and ferrules. always clean and perfect. i NEED white:D

I love the feel of the old yellow personally but if they ever come up with a ferrule that plays like the westinghouse with the chalk resistance and whiteness of ivory I am all in!

Well I see this thread came to life again..........
Two questions.....does the juma have a weave in it?
Is juma the same as elforyn?
Does it still hit like ivory? or is KV's assessment a closer ball to the pocket?

No weave.
Nowhere near ivory. More like a harder ABS and softer than melamine.
I took it to a plastics place to see if I can order them there to save a buck or two. The expert there could not figure out what it's made of. He said it definitely is not ABS. It's harder and thinks there is some phenolic in it.
It ribbons when being cut.
It doesn't ping like melamine. It sounds closer to ABS really.
FWIW I like melamine over it.

I can tell you that there is no weave whatsoever. My initial feedback from customers is that it hits on the softer side.

Any different feedback on Juma now that it's 14 yrs later.
I'm considering em for ferrule replacement.
Not sure on the length.

I have a bunch of old cheapo cues I wanted to just fix up, I have a lathe and Im capable of making the ferrules to size. a lot of them have cheap plastic ferrules so I thought Id just make my own to fit.
I was pondering using material from pool balls, bronze or else maybe using some of the plastic bearing material. i thought i may have something on hand that is suitable. If I can save a mail order it's good for the budget.

I have some dark grey bearing plastic, and it's very tough, although I figure , it may not accept glue very well. I can machien it to size but Its so tough that I really cant' file or sand it.. I do like using it for bearings, it requires no lube , think it has carbon impregnated into it. very slippery stuff..

a lot of the ferrules I see on typical cheap cues, are made with cheap plastic and tend to crack up, probably also being quite old. I dont like the fact that someone can chalk stain them by picking it up and drilling their chalk, resulting in that typical blue stain.

i dont see any reason why they need to be white, actually using a color like from a snooker ball might be fun. I dont mind using bronze, just kept thinking of using pool balls as my material.

will pool balls make good ferrules?

I dont have the experience to reflect upon this "Juma" material or others that are normally sold for this purpose, but assume many different materials could be used with perhaps varying results, Just wondered if I could get a bit of input on that, and it seemed like an appropriate thread to ask about it within.

so far as the bounce or snap I cant' really make any assumptions, some I play with have break cues and I'm told that is similar material to a pool ball itself. I'm mainly interested in making the ferrules to accept normal tips. being able to make them I can of course change the internal and external size so I can make them ot fit any cue I come acoss.

what is a good brand of tip?

I see some cues where thye have stuck on a tip that is a larger diameter than the cue itself, Im thinking this is just bad workmanship done by inexperienced people. should the tip always match the diameter of the cue or is it practical to change that to use different ball sizes? im mainly interested in using 2 1/16 or 2 1/4" balls.

Here is a pretty extensive list of different plastic bearing materials, most probably cut like butter on the lathe. I don't really mind if I need to stop the carriage feed to break the string of "chips" I wont need lots of them , just a few for myself.

I have a few obstacles on my home table, , and I'd like to make up a couple of cues that are just a bit shorter, like maybe 4 or 5 inches shorter than "normal" .
I dont want to cut down a "nice" cue , but I may shorten something I dont care so much about just for this purpose, so I can have 4 people over and give them each a cue so they dont need the shorty so often.

making a shorter butt for most of the good cues aroun seems a bit daunting due to the differences in couplings, some look quite difficult to duplicate. I'm sure I could buy a shaft along with the couplings and make the butt if Im so inclined to. i dont really want o make shafts, I think it maybe better to buy good ones since Im not set up for all that is required to make a complete cue.

Juma is cheap and easy to machine. You can make ferrules from pool balls, hits pretty hard.
I'm not familiar with all the plastics in your link, but POM/Acetal/Delrin, PTFE and Nylon materials makes terrible ferrules and they are hard to glue tips to.
Brass on house cues = damaged pool balls when idiots keeps playing after the tip has fallen off..
I do lots of house cues each year, stick with Juma cheap and works well.
