Hello All,

My name is Rob and I joined after talking to JoeyA. I really like the forums and have learned a bit from reading them.

I like playing one pocket and I'm getting better every day. I now play mostly at Buffalo's which is the spot in NOLA these days. I work May-Sept running a deep sea charter boat in Alaska, hence my name as Capt_Rob.

Today I played the 1pocket tourney at Buff's and lost to Norris who split the money with Ryan. I played him close, but I made a few mistakes and he made none. Dang!

Well, look forward to reading/posting here on AZB and maybe we can play some 1P.

Oh yeah, I don't gamble either but I'll give you a good game.

So, heads or tails?

-Capt Rob H.

Yes, for sure, welcome, Capt. Rob. Admitting you are a friend of Joey A's shows you've got nerve any way. Just kidding my friend. Joey and I go way back to Jackson, MS.

Capt. Rob, is my favorite restaurant, Pancho's Mexican Buffet, on Vererans up and running from Katrina yet?

Best of luck to ya and keep free strokin.

re: pancho's mexican rest

I believe so but I don't go there since they caught the cook shooting pigeons out back. :D

Just kidding.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody and I hope to meet/play some of you in real life.

-Rob

Welcome!

Welcome to the forums! I am from just up the road at Laplace and usually play at Buff's or The Corner Pocket myself. Hope to see you soon.

Whatever happened to the Sport Palace that was out there on Jefferson Highway? Back in the day that was the place for any action in New Orleans. It remains as the only place that I have ever witnessed a$500 set, one handed, one pocket.
Aprocryphal story: The place was robbed one night when a big match was going down. Robbers supposedly got $85 from the till and $6000 from the patrons in the place. Sounded a lot like a urban legend to me but the guy swore to it.
Myself, ego and my brand spanking new Palmer got cleaned out there one sweaty afternoon. It was enough to tell me that my speed was conducive to getting and keeping a day job.
Great place with some great characters. Its a shame if its gone.
I do miss New Orleans...nice to have some more company on this forum.

Re: the sport palace

The Palace is still there and open. It is not what it used to be. It really has gone down hill. About a month ago they were robbed twice in a week. The owner has a good split on video poker and that's all they care about. The tables, and everything else, are in bad shape. There are still some good players in there but the action is small time $5 a game (and sometimes less) and the people gambling are looking to steal.

I wasn't around in the golden years of the palace (I'm 30 yrs old) but I get the impression that you would be disappointed if you saw it today.

The action in New Orleans is at Buff's. It was the Corner Pocket for a good while but now it's Buff's. I like Jamie F and played at his place a bit but Buff has done a heck of a job on his place. The equipment is top notch and well cared for.

Anyways, just wanted to let you know about the palace. Just not what it used to be. And it's a shame b/c it's much closer to my house than any other pool hall. Oh well.

Take care and don't double kiss that short bank!

Re: the sport palace

Capt'n..
Thanks for the update and you are right, it is to bad about the Sport Palace (its too bad about NOLA in general for that matter). Used to be another place, Acey's on Magazine. Not as much action as the Sport Palace but the best roast beef po'boys in town.
I don't know where these new places that you mention are but I hope to be in town for the 1st weekend of Jazz Fest. Hope to run into you. I'll be the one avoiding One Pocket.
