New Semi-Pro ABC League Starts 7/1/13

New ABC League

It is late and I am pretty tired.

Tomorrow I will post a couple things about this great concept.

Mark Griffin

Great idea, guys. Love the game and looking forward to hearing more about this.

When will you announce the rooms that are participating?

Rooms that we currently have and are hoping to have, if you know a room that should be participating go ahead and let us and them know about it.

Region 1 New England
Snookers Providence, of course ;) I think the list of 8 players is full, at least it should be but you could call Ray Mac to see if there’s a spot open.
Amazin Biliards, waiting on Mazin to call me back but there’s plenty of good players up there.
Grand China, Ill have to check with Dharma, he was away for 2 weeks
Yale Billiards CT, Phil Davis has been helping out there.
Didn’t go up to 2 good rooms in Maine, Spot Shots and TJs but hope to get them in the near future if they can get 8 players. Possibility of getting an Albany NY room into this region?

Region 2 NY NJ PA
Steinway I think their list of 8 is filled? Manny and Larry PROMOTE POOL
Skyline Rob Pole is confident on getting his 8, thanks for reaching out Rob.
Clifton billards has openings but Vinnie is working on it. I’m hoping we can get our man Lipsky over there, maybe Jude, Jonathan Smith, Chris Lynch?? Come on men, 1 good rotation match per week.
Castle billiards, not sure haven’t heard from Ed in a while
Drexiline Bob has just started reaching out but has a good list of players that frequent that gr8 room.

Region 3 MD VA
Not sure here, lots of good players but room owners seem to be having a tough time getting commitments out of area player? If I had more time in each area it would be better because any player that spends time with me is in because I can express not only how this helps them the room and the entire industry and all they have to do is play 1 good match per week. But I talk with Cindy at Big Daddys, Steve at VIP billiards, Anthony at First break and Thomas at Diamond billiards, Diamond is looking good but those other rooms need some players to step up to the plate.

Region 4
Brass Tap Tony, Dave and Justin Petrone are all for it if they can get 8. Bras Tap has been there 28yrs and has never closed 1 single day.
Gate City billiards is not only a beautiful room but if everyone was like Don I wouldn’t have had to leave home. The day he received our invitation he called with a few questions, later that day he called back with 5 players on the list and the day I showed for our appointment he already had 8 players signed uo with all their info. All I had to do was play some rotation answer some questions and I was off to the next room. Thanks for that Don AND guys that play there.
Smokin Cue, Matt was cool to talk with, might have a tough time getting people excited about anything other than their multi $10,000 break and run pots! I got there 2 days after they gave away about $15,000 on a WED night tournament.
And we need a 4th Room for this region, any suggestions? We like them to be within 300 miles max of each other,

Region 5 Florida, should have 8 rooms easy but just looking for 4 right now.
Did talk with Tony Crosby and Rocky at Capones but not if we can get 8 up in Spring Hill?
Strokers has my man and probably one of the best house pro’s around, Rolando Aravina, he called today with about 5 or 6 on his list, it should fill and maybe Tony will play there.
Sharp Shooters in N Miami, cool room, good day time crowd and finally got to meet my internet friend Raymond Linares, if he tells ya he beat me at American Rotation he’s lieing, lol Raymond say the area has an easy 8 so lets hope we gettem.
Talked and spend a brief amount of time with my friend and soul brother John Ditorro. He, Rob Melrose and their youngster think they can get 8 in the Hollywood area, not sure which room? The night was fun, I played some Crazy 8, 8 ball with Don the inventor, and then the guys got side tracked on their way out the door when I hit them with some Texas Bumps action, lol. I actually left the room before them, I wonder if they started gambling? By the way this was my first trip to Hard Rock Casino and man that place is incredible! I was expecting same old same old casino, WRONG! If you get the chance go ahead and visit.
Over to Top Hats in Jupiter, JR and James have a beautiful room. Hunter and Masato played some American Rotation. Masato was hanging in there pretty good, didn’t know he was a players. Got pleasantly trapped with these 2 for a couple days and topped that off with a trip to Dennis Searing’s shop, you can leave that shop speechless ;)
JR knows how to get leagues started and I’m confident he’ll have 8, if not we’ll ship some of those Hollywood players up there.
Back to Orlando because I missed them on my way in. Met Faheem, his house man who’s name is escaping me right now, Adam Wheeler is the best in that area and he took time out to come over and get the details. I got to hit some balls on a nice double shimmed Diamond, actually played a game with Julio who was a member of team Puerto Rico back in day. He had me beat but needing 4 points he jarred one on the tough table but match was cool and super close all the way.
Jacksonville Jacksonville Jacksonville?? Tried Bank shots several times with no response, dropped off info at Park Ave but haven’t heard anything. I have friends in the area too but nothing happening. Anyone who can make something happen in Jacksonville please do, miss are main man Neil Fujiwara.
Made an unexpected stop at Bank Shots in Ocala, gr8 room but not sure if they can get between there and Gainsville.
Tallahassee to Zingales with my new friend Ti Tong. We peaked curiosity one night one and then mixed with regulars on day 2. Played a young gun over there one game of AR, thanks Clint. Mike the owner is pretty amazing dude, runs all over the place but does so with such an even keel that it made me jealous. Maybe my favorite looking room?

Had to outrun the storm so headed north to Alabama afap (man does it rain in FL!) beat the storm and smooth sailing to Bumpers Birmingham owned by US Amateur Champion David Rowell. Didn't get to spend anytime with Dave but did go over everything with his GM Stewart who grasped it all fairly easy. These guys love pool and look forward to showcasing 8 high level player each week.
Bumper Huntsville, wow, a sea of Diamond pool table, 8 9ft and 16 7ft. Talked with another US Amateur Champion room owner, lol Robert Hall and his manager Jason. This room is beautiful and hope they can get 8 players to step up and play some.

I still have to go up through KY TN IN OH before I get home but if anyone want to recommend rooms in those areas please fire the names and please bring it to their attention, have them call me.

NOW last but not least, if anyone wants to help form a region of 4 rooms ANYWHERE in the country let’s do it! To make a region we need 4 rooms within a 300 mile or less radius. West Coast players here’s a chance we weren't expecting so let’s give it a go. 4 Good rooms and 32 players with a lil heart.

I know I didn't cover everything and everyone so if I missed ya I’m sorry and Thank You all. Oh yeah, Dick Clark, family and friends, gr8 24hr recoup for me, good dinner, laundried up, good sleep and Dick took me out for 18 before I hit the road!

I could use some help from the pool community folks, we need good rooms, proactive room owners and some players in each area to fill the spots. The format is gr8 for all of us so please help make it happen even if it’s just talking it up and bringing it to other people’s attention.

3hrs to Atlanta, how bout someone building me a possible 8 player list, keeping in mind some pro's are out of town.

Mr Cues II may be the busiest room in the country? Last night was Monday night and they were slammed. I think they have around 40 tables and they were all going. Talked to a few regulars and they say it's like that every night, very nice to see now a days :)

On a side note, the ride from Huntsville AL through the mountains to Atlanta is a beautiful drive.

Joe, this might be the best thing to come along since Breaking Secrets!

The players are going to need something to fall back on down the road, and if this takes off, it just might be the change agent pool has sorely needed for a long time.

I'm going to check out a few pool rooms in my area after I get through my work frenzy and can take the time to do so. We're dog-sitting for a week, so it's hard to go anywhere, but when the dust settles, I will check ou what's happening.

With you behind the helm, I know this is a good thing. Thanks, Joe! :)

I was approach by my local room owner about playing in this last week. I think you were here in Jupiter, FL, Joe. I hate that I missed you. I plan on playing.

There is not 8 good players in all of TX much less 32 within 300 miles of each other..

Haha!!! Always on the lemon. I know better. I hope this thing works out. I think there are more good players in your area than anywhere else. There seems to be a pool room every 4 blocks.

Ha ha I would play in this..I'm coming off the stall..I'm bored..But I'm not sure what needs to be done to get it goin..I am sure I could make it happen though..

Good luck. Seriously. If I had to place a bet on the outcome of this, it would be on the greater Houston area. The talent runs deep over there.

Regionals vs Nationals

Joe, Mark,
Love the idea and sent a message to some room owners in Wisconsin. So if they got 4, 8 or 12 rooms to participate within 300 miles, they could have regional events, correct? Looking for more information on Nationals. I'm assuming the 1st National event would only be the east cost teams starting July 1st.

Where will that be located? Timing, etc?

If this grows as hoped, are you talking about 6 national events per year? Or 6 sessions and 1 national event per year?

Just looking for more info based on growth in different regions.

Yes, any area of the country that can unite 4 rooms within a 300 or so mile radius of each other can form a region but we have to act fast to get them for July.
8 players per room, top 4 from each room (50% of region) will go to the 1 day regional event at 1 of those rooms, 8 players will cash (25% of region) and the top 2 win a paid spot in the 2 day nationals ($1,000 for last).
It's my dream that every one of these players finds a local business sponsor of just $100 a month that they can actually provide value to on a week to week basis and then they'll all be competing for free. Long way off I know but I also know they will have thousands of possible sponsors available to reach out to in their community.

The nationals will be moved around the country and yes it will be 6 times per year. At the beginning we are going to get it as centrally located as possible. We also want to schedule our finals the weekend prior to or immediately after in the same area of some other major events in an effort to help players that may like to attend them also.

The entire format is meant to provide aspiring and high level players with a sensible place to compete on a non handicapped national level. I know there are thousands of high level and aspiring players out there that have practically given up pool because it doesn't make much sense to bust your butt and your wallet but they sure would like to compete if given a better way to do so.

Thanks to all who are reaching out, spreading the word to these players and room owners. It's not the new million dollar league, it's the old fashion united, self reliant league and when we do end up with 64-96 united rooms that'll be a product worthy of attention.

It's like a AA baseball league... The farm system of pool... Love it! :thumbup2:

Just one question though, how does this thing pay for itself? I'm not being a detractor here. I love the idea seriously. And I watched the video of Eberle vs. Alcano playing American Rotation - I think its a pretty good game. I take this new game as seriously as straight pool. I don't give Bonus Ball the time of day in terms of the actual game itself (or the league for that matter). You have a good game here and a good idea for a "league". But I am earnestly wanting know - because I want it to succeed - how does the money work? How does it pay for itself?

And if that's none of my business, just say so, and I'll carry on.

And to reiterate, I hope you eventually get a forum just for this league on AZ.

This concept came out of many discussions that Joe Tucker and I ave had over the last year or two.

Most of the concept and format is his.
The game - American Rotation - is his creation and it is perfect for this type of league. It s a tough game but gives a real number that means something.

If this gets traction, we can have up to 6 sessions a year.
If we get 96 rooms, the price fund will be in the $600,000 range.

We bring the tournament to the player.

It is a great concept!
Wish us luck!

Mark Griffin

I knew I smelled something cooking.
