New York City's Newest Poolroom - Society Billiards - Coming this Spring!

OK Tri State people. Society's grand opening is in 2 hours. Be there or be rectangle! (think that's how that goes)

Anyone up for a AZ meetup at Society Billiards. They have some nice beers such as Hoegarden on tap. We can play a modified version of King of AZB (NYC from 12th street to 78th street :-). Due to New York City's population density, this title could be equivalent to an entire midwest state or some caribbean country. :-)

I was told by someone involved, except for Florida this may be the only poolroom on the east coast entirely with Diamonds.

It's always nice to be a part of something that is just starting, especially something that is started with passion.

I'll toast one to Society Billiards tonight at a local pub and hope that all of the owners' dreams come true.

Oh yeah, good luck to AZ Bers. :D

Im dying to see some pics of the place open with people in it.
im gonna be away for a week but hope to make it by in next two weeks.

I stopped in last night for a couple hours. Real nice place. Tables are beautiful. Brings back some broadway memories. Place is obviosly the same shape as broadway, just SUPER fancy now. I'm sure someone took some pics.

Okay, I went by there today to watch a little of the APA City Cup (Vegas team qualifier)*. Here's my rundown.

Great place. The Diamond tables are beautiful, and the room itself is gorgeous. There are lots of pool chairs and shelf space around each table. The main room is two rows of 9-foot tables, with an offset room with 3 barboxes to accomodate APA events. Things got a little tight in the APA area, but that's expected when your have 16 people around a table, plus onlookers.

I have to say a word about the lighting. There are no windows and the walls were a a nice deep (not bright) red that matched the dark woods well. There was ambient lighting throughout the place, but it away from the tables it could be kind of dark, but not too dark. The table lighting was magnificent. It had deep set incandescent -- no flourescent -- lights. The hoods were wide. The overall effect was that the tables were perfectly lit and the light perfectly spread over the tables, with no annoying glares, from the table lights or elsewhere. This is the best pool lighting I have seen.

They have beer I on tap, which gives them a nod in my book over Amsterdam, and drinks were reasonably priced. The food selection (also reasonably priced), look like good pool food, with some deviations from stereotypical pub/pool hall fare. But hey, if you're looking to go out to eat and play a little pool, you'll probably go to Slate. If you're looking to grab something to eat while playing pool, you'll probably come here.

Rates are very reasonable. The ones currently posted are $6.25/hr/person during the day up to $8.75 on weekend evenings. I heard a rumor from a good source that they're planning to open up the barboxes free for APA members on Friday nights. I'm not sure if it's permanent or if it's true (there are already a few bars around town that do this on Sunday evenings), but if so, I know where I'll start and/or finish my Friday evenings.

My only nit is lack of merchandise. I can see not carrying cues -- they take up space and add to inventory, people are going to buy there production cues cheaper online, and Blatt's already owns the local custom market. But little things like pocket chalkers, cue claws, tip tools, cleaners and polishers, etc., would be nice to have. Seems like something is always missing from my cue case that I just HAVE TO HAVE, and I don't mind paying the bricks-and-mortar markup to get these things right away. There is a workroom with a cue lathe tucked away in back near the lockers, though, so that's a good thing for those of us in need of instant gratification.

Also, space can get a little tight to walk though while people are playing, but hey, that's Manhattan.

Overall, this is a great place. I can see me spending a lot of time here. I'm already toying with the idea of moving my team here if I can. This is a beautiful spot.

*No, I was not there to play. My Monday captain was on vacation this week and I agreed to turn in the score sheet. No big deal, since I have to turn in my own for my Tuesday team, so I stuck it in my case so I wouldn't forget it. I went to turn them both in on Wednesday, which also happened to be my birthday. I started doing shots with the bartender, and a few others.

Luckily, before I left, I remembered to turn in my sheet, but I forgot that there was another in there. I didn't realize I still had it until I opened my case a couple of days later. If we lost a point for my stupidity, my captain would rightfully never forgive me, so I went to beg my LO for understanding and forgiveness, which he gracefully gave.

See, not every story about the APA is bad.

Nice writeup by Oklahoma Kid, with one small correction. The main tables are 9-footers, thankfully.

Are they? Maybe the lighting's not as good as I thought!

Ha, no, seriously, I'm not an experienced pool player (APA SL4). I thought I'd been playing on 8-foot tables at Eastside, but apparently I was wrong. I know Amsterdam has both (all 3, actually). I guess Eastside has only 9-footers and a barbox. I'll go back and edit so as not to give the wrong impression to their potential customers (I've lurked enough here to know this can be a deal-closer) who may close the thread after reading that. :o

eta: I've played enough to have an opinion on the lighting issue, though. That's really bothered me in a lot of places. It looked perfect here.

I'll be there in a few hours

Oklahoma Kid's writeup looks tremendous!

I'll take pics, with manager's permission of course, and post later tonight.

A couple of welcomed changes

1. No funky basement smell. The gut renovation took care of that.
2. Table layout is almost the same as old Broadway Billiards, except Society took out the center row of tables in the main room, making it more spacious for players and guests.

Hey, Jude (heh, just had to say it, I'm sure you've never heard that before ), any interest in hosting an APA team? My team is currently in the division with Amsterdam, Bleecker Street Bar, Antarctica, and Barrows Bar. My home bar is an outlier geographically, and while I love the owners, is really something of a hole. We're a fairly new team, but won the division two seasons ago, and were in first place all of last season before blowing it in the playoffs.

Feel free to PM me with your response. You have a great place and I'd love to play out of there.

Jude, great meeting you and your awesome staff. The place is better than advertised. My only quirk is that you (literally) have your butt up against something on certain shots on most of the tables. Then again, it is Manhattan and they did max the space out efficiently.

They also have terrific food and the waitresses definitely make their rounds.

Pics to follow.

More pics. Sorry they are kind of crappy (@ least by my standards), but I was so excited to play and christen the Diamond tables...:D
