Okay, I went by there today to watch a little of the APA City Cup (Vegas team qualifier)*. Here's my rundown.
Great place. The Diamond tables are beautiful, and the room itself is gorgeous. There are lots of pool chairs and shelf space around each table. The main room is two rows of 9-foot tables, with an offset room with 3 barboxes to accomodate APA events. Things got a little tight in the APA area, but that's expected when your have 16 people around a table, plus onlookers.
I have to say a word about the lighting. There are no windows and the walls were a a nice deep (not bright) red that matched the dark woods well. There was ambient lighting throughout the place, but it away from the tables it could be kind of dark, but not too dark. The table lighting was magnificent. It had deep set incandescent -- no flourescent -- lights. The hoods were wide. The overall effect was that the tables were perfectly lit and the light perfectly spread over the tables, with no annoying glares, from the table lights or elsewhere. This is the best pool lighting I have seen.
They have beer I on tap, which gives them a nod in my book over Amsterdam, and drinks were reasonably priced. The food selection (also reasonably priced), look like good pool food, with some deviations from stereotypical pub/pool hall fare. But hey, if you're looking to go out to eat and play a little pool, you'll probably go to Slate. If you're looking to grab something to eat while playing pool, you'll probably come here.
Rates are very reasonable. The ones currently posted are $6.25/hr/person during the day up to $8.75 on weekend evenings. I heard a rumor from a good source that they're planning to open up the barboxes free for APA members on Friday nights. I'm not sure if it's permanent or if it's true (there are already a few bars around town that do this on Sunday evenings), but if so, I know where I'll start and/or finish my Friday evenings.
My only nit is lack of merchandise. I can see not carrying cues -- they take up space and add to inventory, people are going to buy there production cues cheaper online, and Blatt's already owns the local custom market. But little things like pocket chalkers, cue claws, tip tools, cleaners and polishers, etc., would be nice to have. Seems like something is always missing from my cue case that I just HAVE TO HAVE, and I don't mind paying the bricks-and-mortar markup to get these things right away. There is a workroom with a cue lathe tucked away in back near the lockers, though, so that's a good thing for those of us in need of instant gratification.
Also, space can get a little tight to walk though while people are playing, but hey, that's Manhattan.
Overall, this is a great place. I can see me spending a lot of time here. I'm already toying with the idea of moving my team here if I can. This is a beautiful spot.
*No, I was not there to play. My Monday captain was on vacation this week and I agreed to turn in the score sheet. No big deal, since I have to turn in my own for my Tuesday team, so I stuck it in my case so I wouldn't forget it. I went to turn them both in on Wednesday, which also happened to be my birthday. I started doing shots with the bartender, and a few others.
Luckily, before I left, I remembered to turn in my sheet, but I forgot that there was another in there. I didn't realize I still had it until I opened my case a couple of days later. If we lost a point for my stupidity, my captain would rightfully never forgive me, so I went to beg my LO for understanding and forgiveness, which he gracefully gave.
See, not every story about the APA is bad.
