Just ran a 416 in straight pool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I got home from the Emirates Saturday morning and felt really sick. Stayed at home 2 days coughing like mad and this evening I told Kat I was gonna hit a few balls just for the feel. She came up after 20min and I said I felt weak and was just gonna finish the run that was on 42 at that time. After passing the 150, I really started to wake up and I didn't get nervous until about 260. Nick had the old Dutch record with 293 and my old record was 259. Nobody in Holland ever reached 300 so I was nervous. I made a barely and then it took me another 30 balls to relax again. After that it was full steam ahead again. Missed a funky shot with a lot of inside english to break open 3 balls. Took 3 hours, Kat was the witness Amazing stuff "

Yup, we've been discussing that in the 14.1 forum -- see stevekur1's "Niels is a beast" thread.

And let's not forget that Stephan Cohen recently eclipsed the giant himself, Gene Nagy, by one ball, for a high run of 431!

So the unofficial "modern day" high run standings look like this:

Thomas Engert: 491
Stephan Cohen: 431
Gene Nagy: 430
Niels Feijen: 416
[...]

Congrats to Niels!

These guys are unbelievable!

I feel bad for his opponent. Its almost as hard to sit there and watch, just racking for hours!

On what table Sean ?
IF the table had 4 1/2 corners and 5 1/4 sides, do those runs impress you more than 526 ?

Niels is one of my new favorite players to watch, I've been trying to watch older matches of his on Youtube when I can. Based on some tweaks to my own stroke that I'm working on, watching his stroke and rhythm really seems to help with my own. Chris Melling is another one, just so smooth in the backswing and transition area no matter the type of shot.

Congrats Niels!

I wouldn't say that. We say "modern day" high runs, to annotate the changes in equipment that took place since Mosconi did his 526 in 1954. And the changes *have* been pretty significant, when you think about it:

1. the new phenolic balls instead of the old polyester balls
2. today's worsted cloth (Simonis) instead of yesteryear's nap cloth
3. today's more-responsive cushion rubber, e.g. Artemis, used on a lot of the Dynamic tables that the Europeans are scoring these high runs on (this is significant in the fact that balls sent down the rail will jar more if they contact these lively cushions on the way down)
4. ...others?

That's not including the fact that Mosconi's 526 does, like it or not, have an asterisk next to it indicating it was done on a 4 x 8 foot table configured for *recreational* specs (i.e. looser pockets than the professional specs), vs. the 9-footers that the "modern day" players scored their high runs on.

It's not to detract from Mosconi's accomplishment -- lord knows the excitement that will ensue when his record is finally eclipsed -- but it does help one to understand and appreciate the significant achievements of today's players.

For me, Engert's 491 is right up there on the same par as Mosconi's 526, because Thomas did it on a German Dynamic table, Artemis rubber, worsted cloth, professional specs, etc.

I don't know how many of you have played on an 8' table with big pockets but it's so much easier. In my opinion any 400 ball run on a 9' table is considerably more impressive. I've run over 200 on both sized tables and I rarely talk about the run on the 8' table because it just seemed so easy it didn't feel like much of an accomplishment by comparison.
I'm not trying to take anything away from mosconi. He was a great player. He ran over 300 on a 10' table. He even said he was more proud of his run of 309 on the 10' table than his 526. I just don't think any runs on 8' tables should be in the discussion for high runs.

Simply amazing!! Congrats to Niels.

400 or more on any size table with big or small pockets is impressive.
The hardest part of straight pool is getting a shot after you break the rack open. I have had many multi rack runs stopped this way.
Lets look at it this way-to run 400 or so balls you have to have a makeable shot after you break 26 times in a row. And I know that you have to know how to break each time to get the best odds of getting a shot-but things happen that you can't controll.

What's even more amazing is that Niels apparently found a cure for the common cold. Just run 416 balls and you are over it.
