"Nightline" broadcasting a segment Danny Basovich tonight

I agree,Black is more of a comedian who takes comedic roles not serious ones, but who knows, his name is still a draw and hip with the crowd.Anyone have a better actor to fit the bill?
John Candy? Jackie Gleason? They're dead though unfortunately. Maybe this could be a more serious role for Black, with occassional funny parts (the cake). Look at Jim Carey, he did a couple serious roles, can't say I cared much for them though, lol.

I certainly think he has the talent but when your type cast into certain roles as he is then its tough for the people who dig his comedic work to check out a more serious role, thats why Jim Carey didnt fair well in the roles he played, there were actors better suited for the roles. :)

Good point.

i dont know alot of actors but i'm trying to think of one suited for the roll, Charles Bronson is to hardcore(not taking into account his age). I'll think on it tonight but Jack Black aint the right guy for the lead, he would be a good guy for "Danny" to play like keith did in COM.

I just watched nightline's intro and no mention of Basavich. Nevermind. I'll watch the link. Thanks for posting it.

You're not hustling when you say "no one in the state will play me" so you have to check out other states. You're saying everyone, champions included, are scared.

I think he meant....... "no one in the state, that has NO chance of winning, will play me anymore". They're on to him so he has to hit the next state.

The whole point of hustling pool and being successfull is not wanting any part of "World Champions" "you don't get paid for yardage".

I kind of like Jack Black playing Danny. Danny was a wisecracking, smart ass kind of player. To Danny everything was a big joke and robbing you was just the punch line. Even in tournaments he was laughing and joking between games.

I can see Black in this role, if they can make him look like a player. That will be up to Danny to engineer, and that could be harder than learning to play himself. Rarely do we ever see an actor who can even hold a cue right, let alone stroke it.

you are kidding me man ..... Did you ever see Eternal Sunshine on the Spotless Mind.... wicked trippy flick...but JC nailed it .. 100%...

Truman show??? pretty good work there... golden globe winner

Man on the moon......golden globe #2

The guy is pretty good in the serious roles.

Lol. You know, I'm rolling around in bed over here and I started thinking. There are guys who can do the switch from comedic roles to serious ones. I think it all just depends on how good of an actor they are. I mean look at Joe Pesci in The Super, or My Cousin Vinny, then look at him in more serious roles like Raging Bull, or The Goodfellas, simply awesome man. Owen Wilson is another one, look at Shanghai Noon, vs. that one serious movie he did, Behind Enemy Lines (had to look that one up, lol), both were good movies. I can't think of any other actors right now, but I'm sure there are a few.

Michael J. Fox's best film was "Bright Lights, Big City". Not a comedy.
That's right.

Eternal Sunshine was a romantic comedy IMO.

Truman Show was funny even if it was sci fi,it was just laughable and couldnt be taken as a serious role.

Man on the Moon was about comedian Andy Kaufman.

He didnt really step out in any of these roles, maybe alittle from his cartoonish roles but its still funny stuff. :)

A certain world champion pool player in NJ told me when he read the first chapter of his book and saw it said "I had to leave NJ when no one else there would gamble with me..."

... he had to put down the book, because "he knew the rest was horsesh**".

There are seven or eight pages devoted to Danny's time in Fargo, and I have to say it's pretty fair. He spent about six weeks here in 2001, and he was a lot of fun.

There are some things that are ridiculous, of course. I'm sure SVB gets a little chuckle when he hears the 'nobody will play me" stuff. And the "number one...." well, you know...

And as we all know, when a local short stop steps up to play even an unknown road hog for some decent cash, he assumes the guy can play at least not TOO far from champion speed...

So the idea of making a game, say, in Seattle with Mike Z. or Harry Platis or someone like that while pretending you don't even own a cue is, well, a little silly.

But still. Danny is quite a character, and I don't care how he and his handlers embellish things, I just want somebody to get that movie going. Done well --that is, with a lot of things that aren't true--this movie could be really good, and good for US.

I assume you're talking about Allen Hopkins and if so, I think Allen (or whoever) is a little full of himself. Allens main focus for years has been on promoting, not playing. He comes out of retirement occasionally and plays someone a few sets, loses and goes back to being a promoter. IMO, Allen is smart for doing things the way he does, he makes killer money promoting and doesn't have to fade the BS of being a pool player.... Take Danny from age 20 to present and Allen would get tortured playing Danny 9 ball or 10 ball gambling. He would have no chance! Danny always had, and still has, one of the best breaks in the business. Dannys break alone would pound Allen into a coma! Besides all of that, I really doubt that Allen was hanging out in poolrooms looking for action during the time period that Danny "had to leave NJ when no one else there would gamble with me...". What was Danny supposed to do, say "no one in Jersey will play me anymore but to be the undisputed King of Jersey and to leave all doubt for all of eternity I should go to Hopkins house and call him out of retirement". Trust me, Danny has never ducked anyone that wanted to match up, it's not in his DNA. So for anyone in Jersey to "put down the book, because "he knew the rest was horsesh**" is horseshit in itself...

Kirk, is there a better 007 than you ;-) ??

All it takes is a few "right" phone #'s.... That "007" moniker is held exclusively for Greg Smith though, everyone else pales in comparison. He has to be the best in history...

I don't know about that. If you have the talent for serious work, you have the talent, point blank.

Case in point.... Tom Hanks. 'Nuff said?

Money Pit..Big...That Bachelor Party Movie he did...

He made the transition so smoothly, noone noticed.

Jamie Fox in Collateral and Ray..

Will Smith went from the height of ridiculousness, Fresh Prince of Bel Aire, and ended up doing the Omega Man ripoff, I Am Legend...

If an actor has the talent for serious roles, I think people accept them very easily, actually. The ones who get typecast just aren't that great at serious roles...
