Nit?

Anyone who wants to adjust the bet mid set or in the middle of a 20 a game type of set.
Anyone who says they'll gamble and talks sh*t then you say fine race to 5 for 50? and they laugh and say it's too little.. then you say ok name any # and agree to play for it then they say they dont have time or find any other excuse to get out of it.
Someone that's a pretty good player you agree to give the 6 out and the breaks too if they use a phenolic tip and they want the money balls to count on the break as well.
Someone who slug racks on purpose and says it's a good rack and blames your 30mph break for being 'weak'.
Someone who blames 1000 other variables for sucking except admitting it's them.

Someone who has to have everything (spot, air condition, money bet, length of sets, cue, place) in his favor and still won't bet until he's SURE he can win. Someone who is willing to lose one set as long as you will lose five. ANYONE who is pounding his opponent and finds a reason to quit. Someone who you've Never seen play a tough opponent.
A nit is someone who won't bet a nickle unless they have the stone cold nuts
Basically, 85% of the poolplayers in New York City are nits.
some one who, you've lost 4 sets to, and when you ask to double the bet, all of the sudden they have time for only one or two more sets! thats real fun!

I've always heard the term used when referring to someone who won't bet much and won't gamble for long. They are looking to pull up quick if they don't like the game.
For instance they lose a game or two, and say we have to adjust the game. THAT is a nit!
Another example is someone who woofs about playing you, and when you offer to play for a 100 a game, they say bet 20. THAT is a nit!

I'm a nit then. I hate beating someone 4 sets and they think they can win it all back in 1 or 2 sets. F*ck that. I keep my winnings. Especially after playing 4+ sets. If someone wants to win back all 4 sets they lost then they need to play 4 more sets.. and that is also based on time.

Nit is NOT short for "nitwit" and never has been in the pool world. A "nit" or someone who is "nitty" is, like what many others have said:
1) Someone who won't bet w/out stone cold nuts, and only then...
2) Bets menial amounts of money
3) Someone who pulls up after being down a game or two or asks to readjust
4) Someone who pulls up after getting up a game or two
5) Someone who woofs hard, approaches you to gamble, and then asks for the nuts in weight (variation in #1)
I think that pretty much covers it.
JAM, ask Keith to define it. We'll get a great answer back. 100% lock he's not gonna say nitwit. NIT was the first word I ever learned in the pool hall.... probably because I was one.
