what are your guys opinions on these, like those hypnosis cds on ebay, NLP, meditation, temporal tapping,?

Do you mean hypnosis tapes/cds that are supposed to help improve your pool game? I've tried that just for the lulz, but it didn't have any effect, at least I THINK it didn't. But as all hypnosis sessions, it is very relaxing.

I just call a 1-900 number and they tell me that I have a nice stick and big shiny balls.

Funny you should mention that, Blue.
I called one of those numbers once but accidentally got a hold of one of my ex-Mother-in-laws instead.
That was some of the best phone sex I ever had.

You are one sick puppy. But it was funny (lol).

Thanks irock, but it's more than just being funny. It is my living up to an oath. A sacred promise I made to provide humor where humor is needed.
When a contentious thread causes tempers to flair, I will be there to soften the blows and smooth out the edges.
When someone has gone so far out of stroke they can't see straight, I will be there to comfort and console.
When there is an injustice in the world of cue sports/games, I will be there with a...ah crap, the nurse just walked in with my medication. Later dude.

I have done all that before.

Depending on ones goals; meditation is the best followed by NLP (temporal tapping seemed to me a form of NLP with incantations).

The hypnosis tape (yes, a long time ago) I used, did nothing for me. The tapping did nothing for me - except make me feel retarded.

NLP (coached) is super strong.

Meditation (insight) is a favorite of mine.

Well, I was waiting for an opportunity to do a full review on Ed's self hypnosis CD and I guess the time is just fine so I will do it in another thread as I don't want to dilute this one any more than I already have.

Meditation/yoga is good.
As long as you don't sit in the middle of the table in the lotus position when its your opponents turn.

Dunno if they work or not, but if you're looking at ebay and you have your wallet out... maybe put it away, save up a little bit more, and go see one of those instructors your keep asking about.

Sniper,

Which ones did you try?

Corey,
If you don't mind, what were your goals and what did the meditation do for you?

Was the meditation a clearing of all thoughts in your mind or was the meditation a focus on particular thoughts?

Sometimes, I think my thoughts are scattered and I think about everything except shooting the shot, then other times, I am too hyped up to play my best pool. Every once in a while, I tire and know my goose is cooked when that happens.

Anyway, if you could elaborate a bit more on the meditation, I would appreciate it.

thanks,
JoeyA

In general the people here on AZB are a literate bunch. I suggest that you might like to look at some of the introductory material written by qualified people.

I have written a little on this topic as indicated at the end of this post

About NLP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-linguistic_programming

Despite its popularity,[13] NLP has been largely ignored by conventional social science because of issues of professional credibility[13] and insufficient empirical evidence to substantiate its models and claimed effectiveness.[14] It appears to have little impact on academic psychology, and limited impact on mainstream psychotherapy and counselling.[14] However, it had some influence among private psychotherapists, including hypnotherapists, to the extent that some claim to be trained in NLP and apply it to their practice. NLP had greater influence in management training, life coaching,[15] and the self-help industry.[16]

Meditation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meditation#Health_applications_and_clinical_studies
A review of scientific studies identified relaxation, concentration, an altered state of awareness, a suspension of logical thought and the maintenance of a self-observing attitude as the behavioral components of meditation;[9] it is accompanied by a host of biochemical and physical changes in the body that alter metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and brain chemistry.[72] Meditation has been used in clinical settings as a method of stress and pain reduction. Meditation has also been studied specifically for its effects on stress.[73][74]
In June, 2007 the United States National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine published an independent, peer-reviewed, meta-analysis of the state of meditation research, conducted by researchers at the University of Alberta Evidence-based Practice Center. The report reviewed 813 studies in five broad categories of meditation: mantra meditation, mindfulness meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong. The report concluded that "[t]he therapeutic effects of meditation practices cannot be established based on the current literature," and "firm conclusions on the effects of meditation practices in healthcare cannot be drawn based on the available evidence. However, the results analyzed from methodologically stronger research include findings sufficiently favorable to emphasize the value of further research in this field."[75]

Well I got one of those CDs and it must have back fired. Everytime I went to step to the table I got a woody and that made it impossible to get close enough to the table to shoot. It took me 6 months of therapy and a grinding wheel to get back to where I was before I bought that damn CD.

yeah i seen the tapping thing, and i felt retarded too, maybe thats why it works, takes your mind off of the things that bother you, and puts it on the feeling of retardation!

When you say, "In general the people here on AZB are a literate bunch." does that mean that some of us couldn't read the back of a box of Corn Flakes?
And when you say qualified people. Qualified by whom. Or by what?
I'll tell you Joe, I'm always a little leary when someone starts throwing out a bunch of empirical data at me.

I forgot the name

There was a guy on AZb about 2 yrs back from the Raleigh ,NC area talking to me about a CD he was making......maybe he will see this and get in touch
with me so I can get one.......:sorry: Forgot the name

From what I have read on AZB some of the postings are more literate than others.

Read the literature and then decide for yourself. That is why I cited the literature before referring you to the short articles I have written.

In general (not always) when the more serious articles are presented on Wikepedia they are reviewed and updated by people who know the topic well. When things are posted that are not accurate they are often updated by people who know what they are talking about. That is one of the appeals of the Wiki: The world participates in the construction of it. Within the good review articles, like the one referenced, there are references to the literature that lead to the conclusions presented. You can dig deeper as you prefer.

Within the actual articles the authors often cite the opposing points of view and thus you have a reference to what the minority says as well as the people who wrote the articles. So within the wiki reports you have the very real names of the people who have studied, how they studied, and what they found. Because it is all laid out before you you can of course form your own opinion based on some of the best available information.

If you do not want to be bothered by the facts or consensus opinion that would be your choice. Others who post here might find them of interest. It is certainly true that there is a continuing search for the best information and our (western civilization's) ideas are continually under review.

For my part I do not place much credence in any one person's opinion. It is just that and of limited use. I prefer the consensus from many people who have studied the topic over many years. Each may have their own bias but when taken together the truth (as best we can know it - today) seems to come through.

Incidently, any thinking person should be leary of any information presented. That it what it means to be a thinking person. Some information is better than others but it needs to be reviewed with a skeptical frame of mind.
